Catchy, seducing, mysterious...I first heard this track while watching City of Ghosts. Now I learn its true historical context, tragedy, etc. makes this song that much more important. Thanks for posting this timeless masterpiece.
Mr. Hun Sen and his Corrupted Government need to listen to these classic songs and need to rebuild Cambodian Language and Culture. Too many yuons in Cambodia now. If he can't make Cambodian population grow up...he should come visit California, USA. And stay in the state and report to US Gov't. that he needs to stay because he can't improve the growth of the population of Cambodian because of yuons are behind him. And let USA and another group of Khmer Freedom Fighters to Liberate Cambodia.
I want to shout out OKAY guesthouse in Phnom Penh... very friendly and you can ask the owner questions about the city during the time before the KR took over..
Fond of downloading videos from youtube but hates the slow paced process? Keen on listening to mp3's (still, on youtube) but dislikes the knotty process of manually recording it? The youtube url grabber is definitely the tool for you! youtubeurlgrabber.co.cc
I appreciate everyone's contribution on the history of what transpired during the waning years of the Khmer Republic. We know in full detail what happened when Phnom Penh fell but details from before that are relatively undiscussed and unknown.
@CowardsBendTheKnee YES, I agree, this is absolutely brilliant rock and roll and her voice is spine-tingling. I nevee tire of listening to this song. Thanks to Magical Jeff for an exceptionally cute and lovely film clip. Shake it, shake it baby!!!!!!
Rous Sereysothea still rocks and rolls us, forever. Yes, I still remember the Khmer Rouge rockets also rocked Phnom Penh at the same time, sadly signaling the end of her live and millions others.
What a beautiful song! Every time I listen to this song, I think of the other song by Ros Serey Sothea, "Today I learnt to Drink," which is also one of my favorite oldies. I don't know its title in Khmer-but if anyone happens to know it or has a video of this song, I would love to watch the video. Thanks!
Khmer oldy music is getting known outside cambodia and to khmer new generation, I would highly encourage those of you who are perfectly fluent in english and in khmer to translate it into english - it would be great in a peotic way - so we can preserve and let non-khmers speaking to understand and appreciate it.
I'm sure Jeff wouldn't mind to paste it on the right hand corner. Hopefully, someone out there will hear me and grant me this wish.
thirty years on and Ros Sereysothea gets rave reviews on the BBC.. world renown is the last thing to cross her mind when she sang that song in 1972. This track brings back childhood memories of Phnom Penh under curfew rocked by the sound of aerial bombings, 122mm rockets, student uprising that year and the smell of street food. were you there at the time Jeff?
No, I was not even born yet, and when I was born it was on the other side of the world. Because of this, I really appreciate the small glimpse of your experiences during those years that you have shared with us.
Jeff cheers for the posting. given the wider social tragedy (read abject human suffering) taking place inside & outside Phnom Penh, i found it difficult to this day, to connect with khmer "modern" songs written over that period. Ironically, in 1980 i came across this band of khmer artists playing Ros Serey right under the nose of the Khmer Rouge in one of their major support base. the audience was made up of KR soldiers too ill to fight. well they like rock'n'roll too i guess!
@jeffmagic32 - hard to forget details when you're at the general receiving end of (soviet made) 122mm rockets and when they run out of 122's they fired 105's to the same receiving end! Between 1970 and 72 or so, the National Radio (the country's main media) gave preference to "revolutionary" republican songs (mostly by Samouth/Huy Meas/Sos Math). Sothea's "I'm 16" sound created a wave of copycats by Pan Ron and Huy Meas. even Samouth had to keep up.Peou Vannary also found fame about that time..
.. walk around Psar Olympic (i lived on the southern flank of it; it didn't have that ugly 1992 structure that now sits on top ofthe original open air market) at that time on saturday night/sunday mornings and you'll hear this music among students with radios. the pong tea kaun/toeuk kralok sellers, beef satay hawkers come out to sell only to disband by 9pm. probably dog meat really, we eat what's cheap. read Soth Polin's Nokor Thom's brilliant editorials peppered with Ung Bun Heang's cartoons..
.. or read Ly Eng's Domneung Pel Preuk. these guys were our intelligentsia. March 1972: major student uprising many killed; tried tuning into VoA at the time for THE TRUTH but got none.. May/June a column of republican soldiers mutinied and firing in the air, filed past my high school, just asking for their pays which were what 3 month overdue? and then Lon Nol's stolen election - insanely i volunteered as propagandist for opposition figures In Tam & Douc Rassy.. anyone else remember?
Indeed bombs, student uprising (her cousin was one of them burning books) etc. my Mom used to tell me about that too. In the fading years of Khmer republic, there were a crazy happiness in the air constrated by flying bullets/bombs. When Pkor leun dam chnam screened in Battambang cinema, a bomb exploded, and the rest you can imagine easly...
Wait 10 More Months, is a song Ros Sereysothea sang about a girl telling here beau to wait 10 more months for her. It is the first song in a two song series. The second song in the series is "I'm 16," in which Ros Sereysothea sings about how shes finally 16, and her beau doesnt have to wait any longer.
Those two songs belong together? I didn't know that! Thank you! That's wonderful because Chnam Oun 16 and this are my two favorite songs of hers! They are two of the greatest songs in the history of rock and roll.
makes cambodia look like kansas! great stuff!

In response to chhmar99utube.
As you can see, we have great artists but very poor political leaders.
They gross out the younger generation.
Sorry to post this comment but I enjoy the song.
Thank you for sharing.
