the two versions are at some parts identical, the characters look really similar, at times they use the same movements in the same scenes... then again at some times one is has a darker affect over the other... they're both awesome
I'll always remember how Gandalf used to flail his arms madly as he annunciated in the cartoon version. I guess the animators where taking speed or something and produced far more elaborate frames than was necessary.
Never heard of them before? I thought everyone knew about those old movies. When I was little it would come on Nickelodeon along with The Last Unicorn and stuff.
"Oh, I'm crazy? Those fuckin' hobbit movies were boring as hell. All it was, was a bunch of people walking, three movies of people walking to a fucking volcano. ... Even the fuckin' trees walked in those movies. "
I own both movies (old one and new trilogy), so I know how different both versions are. In fact, the reason why I own the old one is because its so frigging hilarious. My friend and I found in on TV late one night and died laughing. Sam was so ugly, Legolas has almost no lines an just poses gaily the whole time, Mary and Pippin's hair is constantly changing color, and there is one slow-mo scene where Aaragon is running ans WIPES OUT!
LOTR is the best dam book of all time. J.R.R Tolkien is the only person who made me pick up a fictonal book and read it of my own free will. Jacksons is the best by far tho and the other one is not even close. The PJ LOTR will go down in film history alogn with Ghost busters, Star Wars etc. Whist the other one is forgotten for a reason.
I actually saw the old one first, and I hated the shit out of it. Actually that's a lie, while watching it I was so sleepy that I couldn't hate it that much.
Whilst I'll agree that the animated film is quite underrated and had a lot of interesting and new techniques...I can't really see any comparison between them and Jacksons films. The new LOTR movies make up what is probably still going to be this century's greatest trilogy, whilst the Bakshi film...um it's little more than a cult classic.
But clearly NC gives a shit about it and it was nice to see a balanced arguement in his review : )
did you do old vs new: alvin and the chipmunks cartoon vs alvin and the chipmunks movie? if not then can you do it?

naval oranges and blood oranges would be a better analogy, seeing as how they are pretty much identical.

Oh, I thought he'd be comparing it to that cartoon that only did The Hobbit and Return of the King.
I've never heard of this cartoon incarnation
qwertyMrJINX 2 years ago
With good reason. We have all agreed never to mention this movie ever again.
