In my opinion, the most talented male vocalist of my generation. Everyone can recognize it as 'Ave Maria', and anyone familiar with Chris Cornell can recognize it as his 'flavour', so to speak. Even if you don't like it, that automatically makes it a good cover. From The Shemps to now, I was, am, and will always be a Cornell fan.
Karaoke-ish accompanying music aside, Mr. Chris Cornell's rendition is hands down, right up there on my list of the best artists of our time. He can no longer be typecasted as simply a rock music icon now.
@starran90210 It's a bit rough compared to other covers but it's his voice, what's he gonna do about it? God gave him a talent and he's using it. You don't have to like it but that doesn't mean he can't sing anything he wants.
Great vocals on this one but he undone a lot of his rocking by doing this song. Wal-Mart used to play this on their in store radio station during the Christmas season. I won 50 bucks from a friend who didn't think this was Chris singing....LOL I figured any true Soundgarden fan wouldn't mistake his voice...maybe it was denial????????
i think what surprises most people is that singers like chris can actually sing. and (in this case ) sing in latin. i love hearing chris' voice sing the tough songs like this.
I love his vocals, always have but... ~sniffs~ ...the music is a bit... ~sniffs again~ ...hmm... do you smell something burning..? ~runs away screaming and on fire~
Chris Cornell might be the best rock singer of all time because he is really soul ... he sings from the gut. There is no label for that he just is artist.
@bhabeney Amen. I'm not a musician but I don't understand why people have to be stuck with a singular label. If a song moves you it shouldn't matter what "type" of music it is. Just enjoy it.
JESUS CHRIST IS A MEDIATOR BETWEEN US AND GOD THE FATHER AND ST MARY IS MEDIATOR BETWEEN US AND HER SON-CHRIST CONFIRMED BY VISIONARIES FOR 2000 YEARS.
GOD WANTS FAMILY NOT ROBOTS AND ALLOWS ST MARY AND ALL SAINTS AND ANGELS to HELP US!
SHE IS OUR MOTHER IN CHRIST AND BLESSED BY ALL GENERATIONS
"And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." Rev. 12:1-17
I closed my eyes, and I became a conductor, I saw him on his knees, and ballerinas scurrying in white, chiffon and then she comes from her window to meet him in the courtyard and they do a few twirls and then they kiss. This was beautiful and so is he!
Hmm. I stumbled on this. Played it twice. The first time I had to stop it, but I read all the comments here and thought 'I must have missed something'. So I gave it a go a second time. Nice voice, but frankly it lacks something. I had to fast forward it, hunting doe the something extra ... (Like grunge??) but I didn't find it. Sorry. It didn't do it for me.
@vltimatefightr I really like it, but I think I like it mainly in the context of Cornell's other work, like Audioslave - it's the powerful, half-wild voice I'm used to hearing in those dark, compelling rock songs turned to an aria like this that gives it the "something extra". Perhaps that's what's missing for you?
I let my mother who is 80 listen to this...but kept a secret who it was...she asked me to make her a cd of this mans music because it was amazing....LOL sorry mom....cant do that....Chris..you need to make more like this..your voice is amazing....and not just for 80 yo...for 30 yo as well.
i would go to church every day if he was in the choir.... man he has a true voice that needs no computer technology to help him out like so many others do.... he just doesnt get enough credit for the golden voice he posses
Chris Cornell is one of my favourite artists. Ave Maria is one of my favourite musical pieces. The combination of these two wonderful things should be a crowning moment of awesome, but it appears that where a long int should've been used to store the awesome, a simple short int was lazily issued instead. Thus, the awesome was too much, and wrapped around into terrible tragedy. This is simply awful and his producer should be shot.
Farrell, I appreciate the reply; however, I'm not a kid. I've been listening to both these guys since they started. I know the whole story with Vedder's start and Mother Love Bone and TotD. I love Conell's music, and nowhere did I state otherwise. I'm simply stating imho who consistently creates the better music, an opinion I'm entitiled to without being corrected on it. I enjoy both their music.
@doubletreemutt there is no comparison between vedder and cornell. I have asked eddie the same question and he humbly noted that a big reason pearl jam became huge was the Temple of the Dog album of which Cornell sang all and Wrote most of. After that Pearl Jam BECAME. Just check out the way eddie graciously adores chris when they sing hunger strike in LA
@LPlomejor1 no, it is one of the most famous songs ever. usually its done in Italian. it has been used in a bunch of movies tho, and been covered by many artists. pavarati the cranberries etc.
@ edification... thank you! who could ever dislike this song?! #1 is a seriously beautiful song no matter who sings it and a huge #2 its frickin chris cornell!
As a classically trained singer, I don't see what all the hooplah is about Cornell's cover. His pronunciation is terrible-you can barely tell what language it's in, his diction is faulty-I can't tell where one word ends and the other begins, and although it's nice to have some non-chord tones in one's singing, Cornell is just flat-out, well...flat a lot of the time.. I hear nothing impressive here.
@sammyboi11890 View it for what it is, a way to get those interested mainly in Rock, Metal and the likes to listen to something else. That's what is impressive here.
@kaynetkh Again, I disagree due to experience. I have a love and passion for both classical music and progressive rock and metal and I never needed a bridge. If you need to be essentially be forced to try something new, you won't like it. you need to already have that curiosity. Someone below mentioned that they like this version better than Pavarotti's version and I find that preposterous. I give Cornell props for trying something new but it fell short. Those who prefer a rock singer attempting
@kaynetkh pg 2. to sing a beautiful classical song over someone with years of classical training doing an accurate and beautiful interpretation of an equally beautiful classic song should probably stay as far away from classical music and it's beauty as possible, as to not demean or belittle it. That's not to say that there haven't been any successful bridges between classical music and metal. Like i said before, I have a love for both so when I hear a band like Protest The Hero or The Human
@kaynetkh Abstract so perfectly implement classical techniques and musicianship into their music, making it not only unique, but beautiful, it really melts my heart. Unfortunately, my heart is nowhere near melted, hearing Chris Cornell singing Ave Maria. Lara Fabian, Maria Callas, and Luciano Pavarotti will forever trump Cornell's quote-unquote "rendition" of this song.
@kaostra That's the biggest cop out when it comes to music fandom. Subjectivity isn't the beauty of music. @sammyboi11890 The problem is there is no way to objectively judge music, perhaps with the exception of the actual quality of the audio (encoding and such). Whether you think it's a cop out or not is irrelevant, entertainment is subjective, period. I agree, this version of Ave Maria doesn't hold a candle to say Luciano Pavarotti, but it certainly has a right to exist and be appreciated by those who do enjoy it. Your criticisms would be fine if you didn't pose them as fact.
@kaostra And I'll give you that. This has every right to exist. Like I said before, I give major props to Cornell for tackling this piece. It's a beautiful piece.
@kaostra that they're the best bands in the world? not hardly. They have cemented their place in the music universe with their unique sound, I'll give them that but by no means does that give Cornell the option of tackling such a gorgeous piece of music, written by Gounod and Schubert, and performed by the greats of Callas and Pavarotti. He has a rock voice and without the proper training , he should stick to singing rock music and leave the classically trained singers to the classical music.
In my opinion, the most talented male vocalist of my generation. Everyone can recognize it as 'Ave Maria', and anyone familiar with Chris Cornell can recognize it as his 'flavour', so to speak. He has a rock voice and without the proper training , he should stick to singing rock music and leave the classically trained singers to the classical music.
