You have to know the historical backstory and watch the Chinese version. To really appreciate it. I can see how people can get lost in it.

I feel like they miscast Zhuge Liang. Takeshi is a great actor, but really he doesn't look like a great strategist.

On the other hand, you can't get much more epic than Liu Bei's triumvirate of badassery

This is my 2nd all time fav movie, right after LOTR trilogy. This was the most tactical, 5+ hours of captured film I have ever seen. I would love to see John Woo create a 3rd installment. But watching the making of this film ('Long Road') on my blue-ray copy, I understand how difficult it was to film with so many people involved and the forces of mother nature. Brilliant!

It failed as a historical film because the armor for the soldiers is 400 years outdated, they don't include important crossbows/heavy cavalry, fictional scenes of 1 guy killing 100+ enemies, soldiers break formation and brawl like barbarians, and they use fictional battle formations.

The actual movie has two parts but they've merged the two into one for foreign release. I just watched it over the weekend (using amazon) and I did not see Lu Bu. I am not sure if he appeared in the parts that they eliminated. It is a very good movie!
