I saw Opeth in Helsinki back in (I think it was) 2008. We were waiting for Opeth to start playing and some of my friends went outside to have a cicarette. (Obviously i didn't smoke so I stayed inside) Well it so turned out that Mikael and Martin Mendez (if I remember correct) came outside for smokes too, so my friends got to smoke and have a chat with them and autographs too and I didn't. :( I just can't put in words the feelings of frustration and annoyance I felt!
Ironically, I actually get the opposite form of inspiration that Mikael does. When I write my music, I hear a metal band, and say "OH YEAH?!?", and then I try to write better music than bad, or even GREAT metal bands, just because I just love to write. That said, I've written country for no reason at all, with no inspiration. Except maybe Buckethead.
Did anyone else think when he was talking about the personalities of the other band members that it seems like most if not all guitarists/drummers/bassists/keyboardist are kinda the same?
And 'when I called him up for the job in the band he said 'can I call you later, the apartment is on fire?' ' lmao
compare this man with... fuck, pretty much every other metal band out there. pretty depressing and embarrassing, he's like a "rags to riches" story, but instead of faggot rap it's passionate artistic death metal with a heart
Opeth is definitely keeping the old rock traditions of the 70s/80s bands alive through a newer musical genre. I love the Floyd-y sound of Opeth. It's so smooth and awesome :)
Mikael Åkerfeldt might be one of the most interesting musicians out there atm!
I only discovered Opeth in 2008 thanks to one of the greatest rock albums of all-time, Watershed, and I believe this guy is a musical genius and he has the best singing voice (aside from the growling which I'm not really a fan of, but the music is so good it doesn't bother me that much...
@psychofunksoldier02 I think he's growls are fantastic, but before getting into Opeth back in 2001 I came from a Death/Thrash metal background so I was already use to that style of voice. With Opeth that's how I started getting into more progressive style of music and listening to other styles of music.
@Emanny237 True. Guess that's the genious of Mikael because he bridged that gap between us. I just think he's got the best male singing voice I've heard in rock music, so I just want to hear him sing.
Mikael is probably my favorite musician out there. He's a very talented singer, a great guitarist and really puts his soul into his work. He composes most of all the Opeth songs AND does lead vocals for Bloodbath, so busy as hell, and yet he's still up to give interviews and still be funny, modest, honest and kind. Hail Mr. Akerfeldt!
I hate how people stereotype the guys in metal bands being so mad and angry, but yet, they are so humble and really have their head on right, better than most people. While Rap artists are so obnoxious and "in your face" with their fucking egos and all their "money", but all that money is because of stupid pubescent children who only buy their mediocre music because they can relate the fucking shit lyrics about dicks and hookers. Opeth are fucking awesome, and i will always respect these guys
I admire mike more and more everyday. Just to imagine that even with almost no benefit, especially economical, he kept working really hard on his music. That's a true musician, he never did it for the money, he was always driven just by the passion he has for music. He deserves the success that he has right now, and even more.
@MetallicOpeth i mean that cause they said,do you imagine yourself doing something else.......i wont kill myself,i would start a band with him or something
Meh, I don't place people on pedestals. I might find some people more inspiring or interesting than others, but I don't think it's healthy to turn people into idols like our culture seems to want to do all the time. The reason he comes across as such a great guy in interviews is because he is a regular genuine guy. Yes he has the gift of talent, but that doesn't make him worth more than everyone else. Lindgren is a 'mere' IT specialist now. But no less of a legend.
