Leading with the back foot into back stance in Kakiwake-Uke is incorrect. It's like you put your foot out and turned even befroe youfaced your opponent. With that mentality, the opponent would have already grabbed you and it would be too late to apply the wedge block (kakiwake uke).
@Bassai - It's certainly the way it's taught in most main stream Shotokan dojo. I think it's better against a grab from the rear as that footwork allows grip and torque to twist (especially into neko ashi - not kokutsu dachi). The problem I'm seeing a lot with Shotokan Bunkai (and I'm guilty of this too) is that the Masters didn't and still don't know it and now the 'students' are inventing applications based on flawed Shotokan kata movements.
@PrairieMartialArts That's called either Ura or Okuden bunkai. Though the kata itself is performed poorly in my opinion, that's the original Oknawan bunkai for Pinan Yondan, the original Heian Yondan. Not all bunkai has to be totally consistent with the actual technique, except for Omote bunkai (obvious) Check Nishiyama's book: Karate The Art of Empty Hand Fighting. He illustrates the same bunkai for the same kata. This application is simple and easy to apply in an emergency.
@PrairieMartialArts - Actually the Bunkai by You Tube standards is okay. But then there's some real junk floating around out there. Just seems to me a whole lot about nothing much at all. Like where's the BUNKAI?

Absoslutely silly bunkai. It is neither consistant with the kata's movement or imaginative in it's understanding. Uninspired and uninspireing.
