Farthead orger: you have certainly earned that title with that observation of my teeth. I presume you arent too satisfied with the color/absence/shape of your own teeth and felt obligated to comment on mine. Thanks for watching, though, and I concur: workers unite!
Contessima: for the same reasons I listed to HappyGal explaining why minorities dont feel included in the campus, the same goes for the staff. Additionally, given that this is a majority white campus in the SOUTH being cleaned and maintained by a majority black and Hispanic workforce, the issues of race are hard to avoid for those with the willingness and mental capacity to recognize them. We can speak more on this also.
If employees pay their laborers appropriately, your taxes could go elsewhere. But because you and my collegiate level econ prof keep reinforcing this mess, employers get to pocket extra illicit profits. I was using a lot of the Economic termingology you SHOULD have picked up in that precious Fla public high school class of yours.
Laborers who dont get wagaes that actually reflect the cost of living (which minimum wages do NOT) have to turn to TAX payer funded social support programs for their food, rent and (dramatic pause) HEALTHCARE needs. So consumers end up indirectly paying much more than they should be for the cost of marinating labor, which is a factor of procudtion that employers are obligated to maintain.
You see, steamer, the subsidization of labor that occurs when labor is paid an non-sufficient wage for the sake of keeping consumer prices low creates an inefficiency for both laborers and TAX-paying consumers.
SteamboatFSU; sorry that you went to FSU first of all. Secondly, our Econ 100 level courses are taught by a former Federal Reserve Bank director who spews that same labor-phobic pseudo-logic I think you are attempting to defend here. What she didnt teach us was the social tax/costs that are created when labor is paid a wage at the market price.
. Ironically, even with extracurricular involvement, many students in one or more of these identities have to downplay certain aspects of who they are so they dont offend or upset happy gals like you who can ignore these things. Minorities are here but we are apart; you may argue its voluntary, but many aspects of this environment make it necessary. Id love to elaborate more on this with you, outside of youtube if this is a conversation you are willing to have.
Happy Gal: maybe you are also a bit oblivious. As a student of color and an ally and a member of student government and president of a multicultural organization, I experience and share the experience of many students who nonetheless love this school but because they arent white, heterosexual, upperclass, cisgendered, ablebodied, Christian, or want to marry a Tech Dude or work at Coca-cola they dont feel this environment isnt as inclusive for them
AtlMinute Man: enlighten me on just how a tiny private college has reduced employment for the entire state? I wish I could say my school has the kind of clout it would take to induce American Corporations to outsource carpet mill jobs and car manufacturing positions but we dont. Im open to having further conversation with you on this, but only if you promise to stop the union bashing. But with a name like Atlanta Minute man I can only expect so much.
I guess Agnes Scott doesn't teach economics? I think in high school we all learned about price ceilings and floors and what they do? No? Economics101 then? Anyone?
I'm disappointed that the race/religion/class issue is brought up *again.* I applaud Agnes Scott for finally moving to a living wage, but the fact that they didn't for so long has *nothing* to do with how the treat students of color at Agnes Scott.
This is wonderful. A great example of a united front between students and workers for decent living wages. A model for institutions around the country.
Give it up on living wage! With the SPP and north American Union no one will make a living wage ! WAKE up ! Thanks Agnes Scott for helping reduce employment for many across Ga. They also cut out commision at many stores ! F K you !
I work for ASC and i must say that i am very moved that so may people are moved by our campaign. It makes me feel as there is hope yet...I am honored to know those people that serve with me on the campaign, and may we go forth and strike a mighty blow. so my hat off to all.
I do attend Agnes Scott College, and what they don't tell you is how high tuition costs us students.( $28,200 and rising per year plus roughly $10,000 room and board)
Good in theory, this "mission" actually devalues the jobs of other qualified workers at the college who have been through schooling and hard training for their occupations. (Devaluing degrees such as those that us students are currently earning.)

This a great! It's a concise, powerful demonstration of what is going on with the working poor, and what can be done to fix that problem.

This is not an issue of race either. Agnes Scott prides itself on an overwhelming amount of diversity and acceptance for minority groups.
...except conservatives.
