Yoyoyo! I'm doing a basking area home made project myself haha check out the vid! But for the ramp I thought about It and I just glued my store bought floating turtle dock into the wood! It looks like you would need a large one so about $20 but you'd never have to change it!
i have the same turtles one male one female and wanna ask how long it takes them to get that big? iv hade my ones for 2 months and i keep them in a fish tank there really small so like i wanna kow that!
oh and how big it ur tank and aprox how big do the turtles get? thx for the help!!
RES are water turtles, they're supposed to eat underwater since they can choke eating on land, but I do notice he walks the food into the water so I guess that's okay. But for safety reasons maybe you should just hand feed him while he's in the water. Just want to let u know to take notice of that. O_o;
By the way, how big was your water tank again and what filter are you using? My turtles are outgrowing their tank and they're dirtying their tank quite fast now. How often do u cleantank
I have a question to anyone who had or has a RES. My parents got two a long time ago and gave them away within a week because they were to messy. I don't think that'll be a problem for me because I only want one and I am fortunate enough that cleaning systems are better than they were in the 80's. =D
@HALOMANIACALEX well i have mine for 16 years now and enjoy having it every day. they are hardy animals so unlike gold fish they dont drop dead easily lol. but they do grow very big. i think they are a great pet but if your getting one make sure its habitat has everything it needs. like large tank, good filter, basking area with uvb lamp and plenty of swimming space :)
hi there. Im feeling sorry for my turtle because he lives in a small aquarium for most his life. Im thinking of letting him go where we got him because hes from the wild. His water is shallow and one time i let him go in deep water and he just sank. I feel like he will drown. I really like him but i feel like he deserves better. I don't know if he will eat wild fish or insects but he ate my fish once. Do u have any suggestions?
great set up! i like how instead of a regular basking area, u created a whole land area. very creative! is taking the turtles out in the grass good for them?
This is a ramp suggestion leading to the basking area to replace the plywood. Lego's or plastic ramp works well. Attach outdoor tred as steps and add mesh wire on top of it. Your ramp angle is good, so keep it the same.
hey around a week ago when i came back frome school i found a red eared-sleder turtel in the middle of the street (think someone must have just left it ther :/ ) .. anw i took it with me feed it with mincemeat and shrimps and some variety of plants now its eating and drinking well but atm coz i dont have a tank nor have money for one i keep it on the balcony with a shallow bowl of water but i dont think its enough to keep it healthy could you give me any advice on what i could do pls its vital
@annie8nicole you can buy a little plastic aquarium for like 10-15 dollars and if not u can put it in those lil bin where u put food in and just fill it up with water and put some rocks so it can climb and dry up
@annie8nicole Please put it in something better than a $10 piece of plastic. It needs plenty of water for swimming, basking area, filtered water, etc.
People need to learn how to take care of animals before taking them in and confining them to plastic. If it's in that with no filter and no room to dive and swim, your turtle is not thanking anyone
@Yakuzagang5 dont worry its almost as big as a bathing tub with stones and little plans .. and yea i dont hav a uv light but i live in a very sunny country so outside i can dry etc aswell but i also researchd and found some lakes and rivers which are suitable in my country and if i see that she is not feeling well i let her go ther .. we have wild turtels here but sea tutrtels and i take care of them with an animal group anualy when they hatch so i know how fragile they are .. (continue below)
@Yakuzagang5 i ddint just pick it up from ther habitat i know it only does them harm but i found him in the middle of the boiling street bc some idiot left him ther .. dont worry i only want his best and would never harm him .. but i see ur point u are right and i agree ppl need to understand that animals need the best care possible .. but beliv me iam trying my best and try to make him happy and healthy ..
i agree i use gravel as well and i have never seen them tryin to eat it... anyway could you please send me a link on where i can get a decent filter from coz mine has brike :( i have 3 baby turtles aproximatly 2inch each
I have a RES Turtle a little smaller than that, It lives in about a foot of water, I want to pit it in hat size of an aquariam, Would it be able to swim alright?
remarkable job on the slider tank dude. i have only one slider right now but after seeing urs i got to get another an set it up like that. i reall am imprssed. thanks for the ideas. and i have gravel in my tank, never seen em eat it either
I love the ending looks like the turtle is thinking "Get away from my food" as he goes into the tank. I had a red ear slider. She died yesterday :( I kind of want another one but i dont think i could handle it
for the ply wood ramp use something called trex it is way better you can get it at any hard whare stor like home depot or rona home hard where places like that
For the ramp you could spray the wood with that waterproofing stuff. I forget what it's called but just go to a local hardware store and I'm sure they would have it
Take the stones off! Turtles will eat them and they can die cuz stones will get stuck in their stomach. I know that you never saw ur turtles eating them but they should eat them just once to die. I'm not trying to scare you I'm trying to help you.
He should cut a piece of plexiglass from Home Depot the same length and shape as the plywood ramp, and use some aquarium adhesive glue to attach some of that green grass carpet he has up top to the plexiglass for traction. And that would suffice and he would never have to change it!
o yes and my tank that you look at on here you know the 224 gallon one is 4ft x3ftx 31it is a big tank any way you have a nice thank looks good very clean
(get a bigger tank ) get some clear perspex and some clear tank sealent add the sealan to perspex do straight lines from one side to the other all the way down the perspex let dry over night the sealent will give the turtles somthing to grip on to. as they pull them selves out
they will eventually... dont force it or worry about it too much, I used to worry about every little thing when I first got my turtle but they evantually follow their instinct. Sometimes they're just shy and need to feel comfortable in order to follow a regular routine. Just give them some time :) good luck.
i got a turtle in my pond who had all the flesh cleaned off of his eye area, a large section. he is an adult. could he have been born like this?it is all healed, but he couldnt hear well when i came right nex to him he just ate, and when i was trying to get him in my net, he didnt even swim away. if i called the nature center they would just say to toss him back and let nature decide. but im not going to throw him back if he will get caught by a predator..whhat SHOULD I DO?!?! please reply.
today, i caught 2 red eared sliders. one with a 1 foot diameter, and one with an inch diameter..... ho do you get them to get used to you, and to come eat the food when you hand feed. and can you plz do a tutorial on how to make the tank ramp stuff, i wanna make one. TYVM!!
you dont have to replace it due to the mold, when it gets moldy take it outside and hose it off really well then cover it with salt, i mean a lot of salt, then let it sit in the sun and dry, once its dry, rinse off all the salt and let it dry in direct sunlight, it kills the mold and the wood absorbs a small amount of the salt to help preven more mold, works great
there is to much water in that tank, i have 2 red eared sliders and a cumberland slider, that tank should only be filled about 3/4 the way up with a basking are preferably a floating dock or log, with a uv/ basking light above...
my turtle mike died be4 he could breed with mika my other res :( anyone have res eggs id p-ay with paypal 5 bucks for however many eggs u will give me
you sound expert with these red ear slider turtle things can u help me?
i have 3 red ear slider one is small other two are somewhat big, one of the big one keep spazzing out . idk how to explain it but like it always swimming against the tank and it goes crazy. and the other big one sneeze alot. they are still pretty small so i dun have a huge tank like urs, only small ones. what should i do?
I have a six month old red eared female. its about three inches long, i would like to get a male, i would like to get a baby male. would it kill the small male??
@LTPDfilms not if you put holes on it so they can grip whit there nails. or put a reptile carp that is made of plastic or something like that trust me where theres a will there is a way.
Nice tank! Where did you get that 75 gallon tank? I only have a 55 gallon and my turtles are getting pretty big. I would like to get something bigger like a 120 or so.
i tink u should probably consider using something for the ramp that doesnt rot or get moldy. u should use something like plastic or some thing bumpy so that the turtles can get a good grip on.
are these the dinky ones you find in pet shops? i want one. but im using a piece of fake driftwood as a dry spot above the water. a baby turtle wont need much space to dry out on. the tank is half full. got sand and gravel. couple of small fish for contrast. maybe add a pleco. or cory cat. some snails. just need turtle!
how often do u wash the tank out? and do you wash them at all? i have a terrapin, and i used to just brush the shell with a toothbrush..ofc, a never been used toothbrush, LOL
looks very very nice, i like your turtles setup. I see you have a uvb bulb but I do not see a heat lamp setup is your uvb one of those uvb with heat also? looks awesome though and have you thought of egg crating for the ramp?
i have advise cool i bot my RES yesterday 2 lol w/ a 25 gallon tank well just keep it really safe and let him or her get used to their new home or it will get stressed and even start 2 get agresive
Love the awesome job your doing with your sliders. They seem very content and healthy. I have two sliders myself and truly enjoy raising them and watching them for hours on end. Looking forward to having my 120 custom tank made in the near future. Awesome video.
You could replace the board with a plastic part of a slide and tie down a shingle to help them grip to walk on it. You would have to wash the plastic slide weekly as it would collect and get slimey. It's just a thought.
look at my turtles ill answer questions if asked

the mold can make them very sick also if they eat the gravel, it is very unsafe! you are endangering their lives

Nice tank! Where did you get that 75 gallon tank? I only have a 55 gallon and my turtles are getting pretty big. I would like to get something bigger like a 120 or so.

turtles are the most stubborn and determind pet you can have lol, trust me ;D
you've got a REALLY nice tank there btw

i tink u should probably consider using something for the ramp that doesnt rot or get moldy. u should use something like plastic or some thing bumpy so that the turtles can get a good grip on.

are these the dinky ones you find in pet shops? i want one. but im using a piece of fake driftwood as a dry spot above the water. a baby turtle wont need much space to dry out on. the tank is half full. got sand and gravel. couple of small fish for contrast. maybe add a pleco. or cory cat. some snails. just need turtle!

Instead of the plywood ramp, you should put in a cork ramp

Love the awesome job your doing with your sliders. They seem very content and healthy. I have two sliders myself and truly enjoy raising them and watching them for hours on end. Looking forward to having my 120 custom tank made in the near future. Awesome video.
You could replace the board with a plastic part of a slide and tie down a shingle to help them grip to walk on it. You would have to wash the plastic slide weekly as it would collect and get slimey. It's just a thought.
