Phun supports multiple collision-layers , so you can tell it which objects overlap others ... its still 2d though :B

You can set things to not interfere with other parts, like the detail shapes, and you can use layers.

There are settings to change collision. I.E. What collides with what. There are six different collision channels from memory, so he's probably set the two legs up not to collide with each other.
