@AmericanEvita Yes Karajan Bravo! For his conducting here and for championing Leontyne at Salzburg in the early 60s --- where there was still very strong racism.
Price is wonderful here, my only quibble being some smudgy words (Vendetta, for example) and some pushed phrase endings (O Dei! in the recit--the "i" vowel becomes a tremolo). I saw Price about 12 times as Anna at the Met, Old and New, by which time she was starting to swoop and bark in the lower register. There were ALWAYS glorious moments, even in 1974, but, for me, the vibrato and mannerisms turned me off. Her recorded Elvira is perfection. This is superb, too.
I am not among them, but I've heard argued by people whom i respect that her focus on the spinto Verdi roles was a mistake, that she was a natural Mozart singer and unbeatable in this role in particular. Schwarzkopf herself said Price was the best Donna Anna she'd ever heard.
She could have gone in that direction had she wanted, but then she wouldn't have been Leontyne Price. My personal wish is that she'd taken on Arabella, Marschillan, Rosalinde and yes Desdemona, roles that were perfect for her voice.
She spoke of taking on the Strauss' heroines around the time of studying Araidne but I guess time ran out or she thought otherwise. As for Desdemona, she herself said that many many many people including those she greatly respected have encouraged her to take on the role. However, she said she did not like the character and the storyline, I guess "Weak woman, being killed by black man". Othello is laced with racial stereotypes. I understand but she would have been great in the role.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!! That was great!!! leontyne is a godess!!! The tenor is a bit thin-voiced though- I had to find something to pick on and it certainly wasn't going to be Price...
non conosco bene la price, ma in questo caso è superba.
