Just saw Levon Helm & company for a Midnight Ramble session this past weekend. They played this song like this and it was awesome. Almost like this version of the song better then the original from the Band.
What a salute to the days of Easy Rider, Big Pink,
big promises, etc. (1968) our youth indeed.
Big Helm behind the drums in the Last Waltz. It strikes me how US bands so often pay respect to their " ancestors", in invirting them etc. Not so here in Europe, they only remember abba here....
I was there! The Levon Helm band was excellent. I probably enjoyed them more than any opening act I've seen since the Crowes opened for ZZ Top back on the Shake Your Money Maker Tour.
I feel so much happier now having seen/heard the Black Crowes perform this song. Thanks for sharing the footage!

Thanks for this. Does he say Doug Adams on organ also?
Anyway - great performance by all, including Rich who sings really well here - except the tuba player. Cringe.

Why do they let this tubist play a solo? He can´t play for shit. Others are wonderful, though.

Saw them do this in central park. Levon's still the man on the drums.

The brass didn't make the grade, but Levon plays a storm, Chris sounds great, beautiful song. Great vibe to this video, thanks for sharing.

Whose the guitarist with the strat?

Larry Campbell. He's been the de facto musical arranger behind Levon' s two most recent albums.

He says his name at the beginning of the clip - "Larry Campbell on guitar." I'm guessing his name is Larry Campbell.

Love how the Crowes pay respect to the bands that helped pave their way. Levon Helm is one of the greatest singer-songwriters-drummers EVER.
