this sink hole happened because the company operating the well didn't bother checking casing pressure. if an injection well has casing pressure, it can mean several things but in this case, it meant that the casing itself had a hole in it causing the ground below to wash out over time.

so you see, if that water had been pumped back into the wells, especially to keep up pressure so more oil can be produced, then most likely a sinkhole would never have formed, if it ere me managing those wells, i would have been appalled at how the engineers handled the production of those wells.
