I don't think Bruce meant to say three-legged dog. A three-legged dog can still make it through life okay. It can pretty much still live a normal life, but a one legged-dog can't. He's trying to emphasize a troubled and miserable life, much like a one legged-dog would have. The inability to have a normal life. If you just listen to the song, it becomes quiet clear why he chose one-legged dog.

I'm sick of people getting all lol'ed about One legged dog. What's so funny about a one legged dog? Yeah, he meant 3 legged dog. So what? A one legged dog is probably in as much trouble as the character in The Wrestler, a one armed man got it easy. And the song has a theme of "one" SO STOP COMPLAINING!!!

You also remind me of my girlfriend and her crazy talent of completely forgetting about the first sentence of my text immediately after reading the last.
