Crime and Punishment as a musical is a great idea. In fact, I already wrote one version. I wrote and composed it in college. It wasn't half bad...if I do say so. I didn't know at the time that John Cassavetes had the idea first. I wish I had the time to rewrite it. I still think it would make a great musical.
OH THE IRONY! I'm watching this video because it's in Ryan Goslings playlist and the woman who plays the older allie is the thumbnail in a suggested video! AHHHHHH
it's 3 mins. long and it's one brilliant hilarious thing after another. and he doesn't seem drunk to me in this clip. just his usual cool, funny self. reminds me a little of dylan in "dont look back." -bobby cormier
He is one of a kind ppl. Even if he was'nt mainstream, I believe his heart was in other place. He is one great director's for actors , just watch a couples o his works such as Faces, A woman under the influence, The chinese bookie, Opening Night ,etc.
Great material and balls, my friends, two thing that these days of our times are really missing. Maybe the guy had a drinking problem too bad but believe we left us a beautiful legacy and its worthy to remember.
i believe Cassavetes did drink himself to death he died of serious of the liver in 1989
He should have concentrated on one or the other acting or directing, he would have been a great actor, probably getting some really great plum roles, or a great director with many great main stream credits to his name, plus his own amazing independent films.
I could have seen him acting in the Godfather in a supporting role, or directing movies like Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, or Midnight Cowboy.
@east37thstreet That's how it was back then , the next song could have been Mitch Miller or the Stones, we were a different generation back then ,one more open to diversity and change.
Well, perhaps he´s a smart ass here, but please - notice the stupid questions from the other fellow. That guy was just jerking off because Cassavettes was near and it was annoying. John tried to make it good at the end with laughing, but the journalist didn´t even understand that Crime and Punishment was just another drunken joke... So, when you have such a stupid person near you, you have to act like this.
I had a job with a messenger service about 12 years ago, and I made a delivery to Gena Rowlands at the house where John stops and gets out of the car at the end of the video. There were movie posters from Cassavete's films all over the room where her assistant signed the delivery slip.

So bizarre that California Girls came on on the radio, when it was actually on the radio.

@tamerswan indeed. And it was part of his own creative process.
even thou, gave us so many cinematographic moments on the silver screen for the ages, it's been nice still having him around for these days.

A musical of Crime and Punishment?
Actually, that doesn't sound like such a bad idea.

why not -- they did one out of Les Miserables

Pretty sure he did.

He did. A brilliant actor and director.

No, he died from cancer!
taina1968 3 years ago
Yeah, but he was a heavy drinker too.
unconventionalmeans 3 years ago
It was his liver, definitely. He got the hyper-distended abdomen. He and Hunter S. Thompson would have had a tough time in today's world.
