La tourbiloun isn't the original name. The original name is Pirates of dark water. Then it was exported to France and changed the name to a French language name. You have yet to post the REAL original opening. To find it simply find a person who's got there VHS tape recorded with one of the first few episodes released in the US. Remember it must be one of the first few episodes aired, as later episodes also had a different opening. But this shouldn't be hard to find a person with recorded VHS.
seriously. My parents never had a problem with me watching this. Or reading me dark fairy tales. I couldn't watch horror films, but there's nothing wrong with cartoons like this. If parents are worried, they should take advantage of the time thier given to teach their kids about darker subjects before they go to school and learn from someone else rather than trying to hide all dark subject matter so that their kid is shocked/traumatized when they hear it from someone else.
the best cartoon ever that was canceled unfortunately. i miss the show so much, so many memories of this and my childhood. i remember going to a friends and watching every new episode. they don't make cartoons/shows like this anymore, it's all boring and unimaginative. i miss the 90's :(
@cfcefa09 Not all newer cartoons suck, that new show sym boinic titan has to be one of the best things to happen to cartoons since samurai jack (being that the show is created by the same guy).
The original voice actor for Niddler in this version was Roddy McDowall of "Planet of the Apes" fame before being replaced by Frank Welker. If anyone has clips of McDowall's performance here, please do not hesitate to post. ; )
dude, imagine if they'd make like a live action movie in the style of LOTR, with all the crystals and stuff they could even make sequels and I'm sure the idea will be catchy.
@kristicuk Man dood! I really wish they would! Hell I'd be happy if they just finished the Series. With the Original writers of course. I'd be upset if they screwed it up with some boo boo like what is on tv today.
I remember watching this as a kid. I love it so much that I've never missed an episode when it aired. I never knew what happen to it though. It seems as though it ended so abruptly. Oh the memories. I wish I am a kid all over again and bring back all those great cartoons way back when. Cartoons nowadays doesn't compare to cartoons back then.
Both this and the intro with Ioz was used in the Scandinavian Cartoon Network. I think the first 5 episodes had this intro, and the rest was with the Ioz intro.
@VaudevillianSavant Yes, what's up with that? I mean aren't we allowed to feel that there IS darkness in the world, one that we can overcome, however? It's disturbing, but good wins, and does so through valour. I don't understand these parents. They lie to you for years and then expect you to suddenly face "real life". This is not how education is supposed to be done, I'm glad we had these "dark" cartoons to help us. They were the best.
I think it was Turner's decision to make the show less serious when they bought Hanna Barbera Productions. Turner owned Hanna Barbera Productions from 1991 to 1996. Hanna Barbera Productions started working on the scripting process of this show since 1989. The show was called "Dark Water."
@konway87 As I recall, the show was originally a mini-series called Dark Water. It was 5 or 6 episodes long. It was successful enough to spawn an actual series, renamed Pirates of Dark Water. Not as good as the original, but still quite good.
Now I'm going completely from my memory as a kid, and I'm just wondering, does this sound right to you?
Anyway, this was one of the better cartoons of it's time, and I was very disappointed when it was canceled without any resolution.
@charlesajones77 Yes you are right. The show was called Darkwater. The first 5 episodes had a serious tone. After that, I think it was Turner's decision to make the show less serious. But later Episodes like A Drop of Darkness, The Dark Disciples, and The Ghost Pirates did have a serious tone. But not as much as the first 5 episodes.
Ah good times :)

I loved this show as a kid. A lot of the stuff my little cousins watch now isn't as adventurous or imagination-inspiring like this was.

This was some of the most awesome fantasy/adventure music I've heard for any cartoon, both back then AND now.
It just radiates this sense of magic, wonder and epicness.

Is Ren the first Caublasian in a television series?
The guy has dark skin.
Blonde hair.
Slanted eyes.
Ren is the Chinese word for person.
