Of all the changes to the book Peter Jackson made, this one makes the least sense. I mean, Elves didn't even fight at this battle for crying out loud. And then to go and kill a minor character who only appears briefly in one chapter (may be more than one chapter, but only the chapters in Lothlórien. I don't have my book in front of me, so it could be 2 chapters, maybe). Why would he do that?

This scene doesn't happen in the book. I can remember reading it, full of the same fear and trepidation as the people of Rohan, waiting for the elves to show up only they never did.

Peter Jackson did change a LOT of things from the book and purists will never forgive him for it but I still love the films. This scene was a good way of showing the uninitiated *armchair* LOTR fan the strength of bond men and elves once had.

I don't understand why people don't realize he had the Galadhrim go to the aid of men in the first place, it was the sacrifice made to save middle-earth by the elves with Haldir the prime candidate to lead them, to go and save his friend Elessar, i love the addition personally for it makes my favourite character so much more then he was in the books, his sacrifice reminds me of the sacrifice by Katsumoto and his clan of Samurai in "The Last Samurai" it may be sad but is still a great gesture.

I absolutely adore the movies but this is one of the WTH was he thinking? moments. The only elf at the Battle of Helm's Deep was Legolas, and a marchwarden of Lothlorien certainly wouldn't have left one of the borders of the forest undefended.

This is so stupid. The Last Alliance of Elves and Men was in Mordor when Isildur took the ring from Sauron. At this time the Elves are leaving Middle Earth; they see this war as an affair of Men. Haldir shouldn't have died - he probably went over the sea at some stage after Lothlorien started to waste away

I know! I always ask, Why Haldir? Because Tolkien only mentions him once and no more? There's no call for him to die. I love PJ, but watching Haldir die makes me want to kill him for killing off one of our favorites.

Because first: one thing has nothing to with with the other.

Second: It's a movie and it's based on a book. There's nothing real about it. It's a story and if it says that Haldir dies, he dies.

Third: I keep asking myself why people, especially girls, always bug around at films they would have made different. It's not your movie and you would not be able to do it like PJ did it. Live with it .

@orlandogirl213 PJ exaggerate with Legolas, specially with the Mumakil in The Returnt of the King, but Legolas is the son of Thranduil, the King of the Mirkwood, and again, Haldir was just a guardian of the Lothlorien´s borders :)

And a stabb i think it can killed an elve, a minor at least, but I think it was a big one, and in the back. Im thinking in Saeros, an elve from Doriath, he died with a broken neck, because he fall into a river.

Yes, Legolas is the son of King Thranduil, that is why he wears a lovely crown. I can't wait for the Hobbit so we may see King Thranduil.

Whenever I watch this, I wonder what the heck Pete Jackson was thinking! Since we haven't seen Legola's father yet, Haldir is second coolest Elf and he DIES in SLOW MOTION! @orlandogirl213 My BIGGEST gripe with this movie was that the elves never did join the Battle at Helm's Deep in the book-- so Haldir never does die- at least, not in the original story. However, I believe Peter Jackson did this to convey a message- to show that not even the immortal elves are impervious to death or the darkness of Sauron and Sarumon. Haldir is a key character, although not a major one, and his death impacts the viewer more than any one random elf.

@TwistedResolve I only had a problem with Haldir dying because he was the coolest Elf next to Legolas because we haven't seen Thranduil yet. I understand the message, but I think it's redundant. We know Elves can die just like Men in battle. We get it. I don't think it was necessary to kill off a really hot Elf just to say what we already know. As I said, because of that, I got scared for Legolas because when he was helping Aragorn and Gimli, any Uruk could've come behind him.
