I was a competitive athlete and in swimming and I think that that was a odious display on the part of the caller. Swimming tends to draw a certain crowd and maybe that's why. But no one that I knew when I swam would have that lack of professionalism or disrespect for an athlete and his nation. They'd probably chuckle but not over the air or mic. Of course people's standards weren't at street/animal level back then either.

C'mon they didn't laugh in his face. This isn't a school swimming championship. It's the Olympic Games. The normal 8 starters is already down to 3. Then 2 of them disqualify themselves. The remaining swimmer who has never swum in a pool before, goes out hard as though it was a 20 metre race. In the last 20 metres, people were wondering if he would even make it to the wall. When you get the giggles, it's pretty hard to stop.

l'esprit olympique d'y a un siecle c'est a l'epoque ou les joueurs n'etaient pas professionels, ou certains venaient car ils etaient les meilleurs dans leurs pays mais ne connaissaient pas le niveau des autres, et etaient accueillis a bras ouvert malgre qu'ils etaient plus faibles que d'autres dans ce sport. @youngblackfrench16 Les JO doivent être l'aboutissement d'une carrière. Lui avait commencé la natation 8 mois avant. Qui peut prétendre se qualifier pour les JO après 8 mois de pratique ? Il savait qu'il ne serait pas compétitif mais il a voulu être un olympien malgré tout.
Il était citoyen d'un pays sans culture de la natation et sans concurrence, et il en a tiré parti pour se qualifier facilement. Tant mieux pour lui mais je ne le plains pas non plus.

l'esprit olympique d'y a un siecle c'est a l'epoque ou les joueurs n'etaient pas professionels, ou certains venaient car ils etaient les meilleurs dans leurs pays mais ne connaissaient pas le niveau des autres, et etaient accueillis a bras ouvert malgre qu'ils etaient plus faibles que d'autres dans ce sport. Donc oui accueillir un sportif d'1 pays ou ce sport est tres peu pratique c'est l'esprit olympique d'il y a 1 siecle et c'est un compliment

@youngblackfrench16 Les JO doivent être l'aboutissement d'une carrière. Lui avait commencé la natation 8 mois avant. Qui peut prétendre se qualifier pour les JO après 8 mois de pratique ? Il savait qu'il ne serait pas compétitif mais il a voulu être un olympien malgré tout.
Il était citoyen d'un pays sans culture de la natation et sans concurrence, et il en a tiré parti pour se qualifier facilement. Tant mieux pour lui mais je ne le plains pas non plus.

Hé, d'une les commentateurs finissent quand même par dire bravo, et de deux l'un d'eux est médaillé olympique tout de même... donc je comprends que ça les fasse marrer. Au début.
Faut arrêter de crier au scandale pour trois fois rien. C'est faire preuve de beaucoup plus d'étroitesse d'esprit que ces commentateurs qui rigolent avant de saluer la performance.

When he swam that it was the first time in a pool longer than 20m, twice as far as he had ever swum before, the first time he had used blocks and he did it with all these people laughing in his face. That is the soul of a true olympian.

Why shouldn't people laugh?
I respect him for soldiering on through and he thoroughly deserved his cheers at the end, but the fact is the guy was fucking pathetic at swimming.
There are plenty of people who suck at swimming, but they aren't in the olympics.
Its not his fault, its the IOC's fault. Help sports at grassroots levels, dont invite no-hopers to the Olympics. Cos if you do - I am, rightly, gonna laugh my ass off. Though in truth I didn't find it too funny - I found it embarrassing.
