I don't think the underlying motives of such comments are always sinister, but reflect a challenge to a preconceived view. e.g. someone might say He's tall for an asian or she can really play ball for a girl or She looks good for a 45 year old. Is it an insult to you to hear, "You sound white?" It shouldn't be. When a white person says that to you, they mean it as a compliment, trust me, I'm white. I have dark hair, brown eyes and an olive complexion. I too have been told by a white male, that I "look exotic" I go by the expression on their faces. I think that's all we can do. He meant it as a compliment, so I took it as one. Hope that helps. You enunciate, you are not ghetto is why they say "You sound white."

I don't think the underlying motives of such comments are always sinister, but reflect a challenge to a preconceived view. e.g. someone might say He's tall for an asian or she can really play ball for a girl or She looks good for a 45 year old. Certain comparisons are apparently more sensitive than others though they pretty much convey that you don't meet certain expectations from their experiences.. SOunds like a complimentary effort.

Disproportionately, there are more African Americans like that, but to say the majority of African American women who are middle class, incidentally, doesn't make sense based on the statistics. However, if a black female who has the same background I do in terms of thinking, education, world values wanted to date me I would say yes. 20% of Caucasian males according to Wikipedia are open to dating black females. However, we think black females are off-limits in many cases and date black males.
A female black friend was harassed by her parents for dating an Italian American marine. It's better now.

Welcome to reality in our world. We have a president and first lady who are such a fine example of what anyone can become with hard work and education along with personal integrity. Part of getting through life's journey is accepting that some individuals will never get past outer appearances to see who someone really is. i know that someone out there is gonna take this the wrong way but, i think the reason i myself or others say that, is because for me i do not believe in interracial relationships( i don't care if anyone else you know is in one) but for my personal self i dont really look at african american women like that because its just not my OWN personal belief and like jonathanbain14 said, african americans for the most part tend to think the same way so i think thats why the phrase is used

Blacks in America (which is fairly small %) have built a pretty bad reputation over the years (inarticulate, uneducated, poor work ethic, angry, violent, bad attitude...).
As a result, other races are either fearful or disgusted by black people. With that said, black people have to work harder and smarter to overcome these stereotypes. It's not right or fair to judge an entire race by the actions of some, but unfortunately that's the way it is. My advice: "Be the change, you want to see".

If one doesn't acknowledge the past then one can't change the future. Those things were real and they still affect people today. Just because you don't believe it doesn't make it less of a fact. There are still neighborhoods that have deeds that say that the owner can't sell the house to blacks. This is a reality.

actually slavery doesn't touch you at all it didn't even toch your mothers generaton or your grandmothers. Personally I feel like people hang on to that horrible time to feel justified in the hate.. If you care about slavery do something for people who are slaves today all over the world in other countries and stop snivelling about something that never touched you.you live in the greatest nation on earth and EVERYTHING is at tyour disposal.

@thedarksideofbetty .I'm not going to agrue with you about this. If you talk to any EDUCATED person they will tell how important it is to know your history. You can look for patterns and strategies and apply them to your daily life. I was not saying live in the past. But you if believe that the past doesn't affect the present you are crazy. There is nothing wrong with arming oneself with as much knowledge as possible.

I have had the same experience and still do no matter where I go. As a kid people would ask me if my mother or father was of a different race. All I can do is try to treat people the way I would like to be treated. It can be hard, but so is life.
