  • The Falls never completely freeze over. The volume of water, the elevation change in a short distance (backed up water would simply go over the top) prevent it. On a few occasions (non in 1911), the American Falls had ice build up far enough upstream to divert all the water from the Tonawanda channel to the Chippawa channel. When ice shelves form over the water, the water is running below the ice, and it gives an appearance of being frozen.

  • @TommyIsH080625 actually in 1848 and 1936 it was completely dry, they cut through the columns and everything to prove it. Lake Erie was completely blocked by ice at the entrance to the river, and it IS documented that the water flow completely stopped.

  • @surfandsk8 ... The question was about the freezing of the falls. Prior to preventive measures at the mouth of the Niagara, at Lake Erie, there was no flow into the Niagara from Lake Erie. This is not a matter of water not flowing due to the Falls freezing over. Some of the water flow was also complicated over some decades due to the amount of water used by factories along the river. When the modern power plants were built, measures were taken to keep water flowing into the Niagara.

  • @TommyIsH080625 Read my comment more carefully. Both in 1848, and 1936 the falls froze completely so it was dry. there was no running water beneath the ice.

That has to do with the freezing of the falls.

  • @surfandsk8 you actually said, "in 1848 and 1936 it was completely dry, they cut through the columns and everything to prove it. Lake Erie was completely blocked by ice at the entrance to the river, and it IS documented that the water flow completely stopped." That is my point, the water was not flowing from Lake Erie. The ice at the falls itself (a significant lower elevation) did not cause the water flow to stop.

  • @surfandsk8 - in fact the water was slowed to a trickle at least 5 times due to ice and water diversion by industry: 30 - 31 March 1848, and then 1909, 1936, 1938 and 1949. My original point was a dispute with the date as being 1911, a year that did not have a flow reduced to a trickle. In 1969, the US Army Corps of Engineers totally stopped the flow of the American Falls but, at no time was that during the winter.

  • @TommyIsH080625 You actually said "When ice shelves form over the water, the water is running below the ice, and it gives an appearance of being frozen." My original point contested that, saying that there were two dates (which you just agreed with) that the water was completely frozen, and stopped. whether or not the flow was blocked 15 miles from the falls, or 15 feet, doesn't matter. There was no water in liquid form, only frozen.

  • @surfandsk8 - Again, I was saying the water slowed to a trickle due to several reasons - none of which were due to freezing at the falls. When a water main break miles away causes water to reduce to a small amount, and the consumption of most remaining water by people between you and the break reduces it to a trickle; then, a frozen ice cube in the freezer is not a cause for lack of normal water flow, but for a trickle.

  • this sucks

  • you suck

  • thats amazing

  • omg
