You should not have killed that guy! He will not attack you during the tutorial. He will attack you when you return to this place (Northern Undead Asylum) from the Firelink Shrine. If you are decently levelled/equipped you can deal with him and he drops some decent loot!

Before you go up the stairs where the ball comes crashing down and breaks the wall behind you, there is another staircase to the left that I can't climb. However there is a corpse there that has an item but I can't get to it. Is there a way to get that item, or do I have to come back to this place later?

This doesn't look like a howcast. It's more like a guy beginning to learn to play the game and is in no way prepared to teach or show us "how" to do it.

If the guy can harm you after death you should have healed him not killed him, since he will be dead and ready :P

Have u played demon souls b4? man its not bout blocking master dodge master the game u arent suposed to block coz u stand stil loose stamina and some halth sometime you even get knocked. Just a lil tip from a demon souls lover here
