It is called a "flash bang." It causes your concussion but also a very brief flash that can blind you. Yes they do explode to a degree and spit metal.

There are 2 types of flashbang grenade. The reusable types use an alumina fill that is more dangerous and likely to ignite fires. There is another type that isn't reusable and is safer in the respect that it is much less likely to ignite flammables, though it's still possible.

The reusable types are most often used in the controlled environment of training. While the disposable types are usually used in real world situations.

No kidding? REALLY?!?! I never knew THAT!!! I hope you catch my sarcasm there, I layed it out hot and heavy for you. No shit I know, they do the same thing for training such as grenade duds that just go "pop" vs the real ones. None the less they are still categorized as "grenade" or "flashbang." They are coming out with a new one though right now that is supposd to increase its performance greatly. Hint: They added a few holes a the bottom to allow more "flash" out and less grenade going boom.
