  • @marvolo21mz Really? Looks so gray and dried up to me. :(

  • '' I've been to a couple of parties like that myself' LOL I love those little gems he says. Wonderful episode as always.

  • 29:00 Talk about global warming.

  • Huh. He's a fool. Dusnt even now how to spel Googel. Why dusnt he just look on internet. Fought he was clever but no hes thick.

  • @vzbxvzbx1 Googol is the correct spelling, keep in mind that this series was made in the late 70s. There was no internet and also no search engine named 'Google'.

  • Song that starts at 49:09? With the harp-y sound? I can't find it anywhere. Help?

  • Many great scientists of today derived inspiration from Carl Sagan's Cosmos, and although most people do not realise it, the world has much to thank him for. I have thought much about how I would try to explain the complexities of the universe to an audience with little scientific knowledge or even none at all. Carl achieved this with ease whereas others failed. A classic Carl Sagan gem of a quote, "we need imagination and scepticism both". No one could have said it better.

  • Should he really have been playing with Uranium?

  • Way to spell Google wrong. 8:00

  • @MrImmoli I really hope you're not being serious..

  • @braddykman

Nope, it was a joke. =P

  • The sun is insane up close. Hard to wrap your mind around

  • SERIOUSLY!? ONE DISLIKE?! what an asshole.

  • its good that they dub this with the correct science. It shows a care not seen recently in the media to ENSURE that all the facts are correct.

  • Too much life on this planet and not enough intelligence.

  • If nothing else, the beginning of this video should at least inspire people to eat more apple pie! I'm hungry... This is the most incredible series I've ever seen. Thanks for uploading them TomKNJ!

  • Guys, get over it. The scene was re-dubbed for the re-mastered version of the series. The science had been updated since it was first made. Don't forget this was recorded in the '70s

  • Was he talking about when he would get high at 44:25?

  • 34:00 One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces...

  • Only 7400 views ? For the greatest Documentary maker ever ?

  • 11:44 O-o what the heeeeeeeeeeeell?

  • Yea well I got an advertisement on Christian mingle on a science video.

  • I just got an advertisement for the GOP on the screen. Fuck everything about that

  • (6.44) "..and light doesn't travel infinitely fast"

i can't get my head round that statement...can anybody help?

  • @jimaldo64 Light travels at 300,000 km/s

For example, if you turn on a light, it takes time for the light to reach your eyes. It's hard to wrap your head around it, since the time it takes is almost instantly. Light is composed of tiny particles, imagine that millions or even billions of them are flying through the air when you turn on the light. It takes time for anything to travel a distance. We don't think about some things taking time, but that's solely because we can't comprehend it.

  • @jimaldo64

    Good question!!!

I think Carl is trying to say that the speed of light is not a big deal if you talk about the infinity.

  • he actually says 90 u idiots

  • @dumastar488 He originally said 80, it was redubbed years later.

  • The prop department probably should have chosen to use a pumpkin pie.

  • 2:48 is the best part ;)

  • @Blackart3D

yeah the bit leading to his Elvis impersonation..."thankyouverymuch"

  • He definitely says "eighty" at 3:47, but I'll let him off cos he is truly awesome.

  • anyone know the song at 57:40

  • WOW people like to miss the point of a carefully constructed series here on youtube eh

  • Chuck Norris tried to fight Carl Sagan but failed!

    How?!

Sagan made a can of whoop ass from scratch!

  • mmm... pie.

  • Goddam the first few minutes hes just making us hungry!

  • @jiaxi13 Haha, I know, right? :P Don't worry, I'm a gigantic fan of the man.

  • Holy shit, he's so bad at cutting the pie.

Come on man, you have a doctorate and you can't cut a slice of pie?

  • @incongruousinquiry Carl Sagan can cut a pie any damn way he wants to. He's fucking Carl Sagan. Leave him be.

  • Does anybody know the name of the song at 57:40 ?

  • Thanks so much for the upload.

  • Are't...... aren't you going to eat your pie?

  • sweet pink floyd is in here :D

  • @ZOLTAR802 great song 'one of these days'

  • i think when he says "90" at 3:47 it sounds dubbed. watch his mouth, and he says "eighty"

  • @yablebab You're right! The sound quality and distance changes as well!

  • @yablebab Look closely, he really says "ninety" ;)

  • @Quartrez Carl's voice is clearly dubbed so whatever he said it either wasn't "ninety" or else he burped or something during the original recording so it needed to be fixed later. "Eighty" is certainly a good guess.

  • @Ranillon No he said "ninety". Look at his tongue, he clearly pronounces the two Ns. But whatever...

  • @Quartrez Lip movements for "ninety" and "eighty" are essentially the same so on that basis it is very hard to tell the difference. However, if he said "ninety" the first time around then why the need for the dubbing? If he had obviously flubbed the line they would have just redone the shot then and there. A later dub strongly suggests whatever he sad originally was wrong, but wasn't caught until long after the fact thereby necessitating the dubbing to fix the error.

  • @Ranillon It's not dubbed. >_> Just because he says "ninety" louder doesn't mean it's dubbed. And look at his tongue when he says the "n" of "ninety" You can clearly see the tongue doing the move to pronounce an N.

  • @Quartrez It is OBVIOUSLY dubbed -- the sound quality is clearly different. In fact, the dubbing is rather clumsy. Likewise, your lips and tongue move in such very similar ways that it makes distinguishing between different possible related totals with the same number of syllables -- fifty, sixty, eighty, etc -- extremely difficult at the range of the camera in that scene. Therefore, we are left with just logic to figure out why the dub was done (as I listed previously).

  • @Ranillon No, the sound quality is not different, he just says "ninety" slightly louder >_> And it is NOT dubbed ! Stop assuming it was.

  • @Quartrez It's strange that we are here watching a show about skepticism and the search for truth and yet you are just mindlesly repeating a belief even though the evidence against it is both obvious and right before your eyes. Play the scene over and over a few times -- the sound quality is obviously quite different and the sound doesn't quite fit the movements of his lips. The fact that they went back and fixed a mistake is commendable, another sign that Sagan valued truth over fantasy.

  • @Ranillon Dammit man, I knew you'd come up with this stuff. I watched it over and over and over and he clearly says "Ninety". It's not mindlessly repeating stuff, I WATCHED IT A DOZEN TIMES, looking closely at the movement of his mouth, THIS IS RIDICULOUS. The rhythm of the mouth wouldn't have been the same if he said "eighty" because you pronounce "eight" significantly faster than you pronounce "nine". As for "it sounds dubbed" it's just because he says it louder to put emphasis on the number.

  • @Quartrez If you won't see the obvious despite the clear evidence...well, I have to wonder why you bother with a series like Cosmos at all. It is certainly ironic if nothing else.

  • Comment removed

  • @Ranillon And I have to wonder why you bother with a series like Cosmos at all when you can't focus enough on the content of the video to notice stuff like "hmmm, hey, it seems dubbed".

  • @Quartrez I was just agreeing with another post. You were the one who insisted that the obvious couldn't possibly be true.

  • @Ranillon Still...

  • @yablebab yes...it's dubbed and it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that out lmao

  • Blatantly. Good spot, really funny when you watch it back
