Religious freedom loses when gay people aren't allowed marry because people with different religious views don't let them. The word "faggot" does not exclusively refer to homosexuals. The word means "something you burn" with a connotation of "worthless" and "to be destroyed or wasted" - the term is used in the Bible which is where some of the religious connotation comes from.

Plus, when somone calls you a "faggot" they are not calling you gay or homosexual, most likely they mean wimp, effeminate, girly, or weak.

It's not at all the same as a racial slur.
