I thought Val Kilmer was great in "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" and "Wonderland". Fair warning: "Wonderland" is the kind of film with characters who are so repulsive you'll want to shower after watching it. And "Tombstone"? Come on! Kilmer rocked that role so friggin' hard. "I'm your huckleberry..." Hell yeah.
I liked Val in 'The Doors', 'Wonderland' and 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'. Kermode is actually being a bit of a twat here. Instead of being a critic he's just flat out insulting the man. I highly doubt he would've done it Val Kilmer did show up.
Isn't it the case that all actors are essentially limited, in the sense that their range is dictated by the conventions of moviemaking, namely the direction, script and such like.
No offence, but you're splitting hairs. Yeah, an actor like Christopher Lee could never make a convincing six year old girl, I guess that makes him limited to an extent.
When people call an actor "limited," they mean the actor is more limited than others - Keanu Reeves can convincingly portray a total of two different emotions (blank and dumbfounded), hence he is more limited than, say, Sean Penn, who is a great deal more flexible than that.
There is a Tom Cruise, a Josh Hartnett and others whose names this proves I have managed to supress. Yey! I would start up on that lot before attacking Val Kilmer. If Val Kilmer is a lump of wood, what is Tom Cruise? Bullshit!
