Actually you can trigger the bug by just going around a loop as well. If you hit the loop just right you can just go around it continuously and after a few loops with the Porsche March Indy you will attain the power gear top speed -- then exit the loop.
Me and my brother discovered another one. We built a lap in the shape of a giant rectangle (all around the map) with sides connected by lutted curves. When by took formula as the fastest car it just rose up after reaching some max speed and stayed flying high above the ground for even minutes. Then it just blew up.
I don't think in the version that I owned, the bug was in every car. Just the Indy and the NSX I think. And it was different in the NSX, since it was harder to keep it at that speed, while the Indy would keep on it as long as you held the the 'up' arrow pushed in. Buy the way, I wonder whether it actually was a real bug, or that the programmers programmed it intentionally, or saw it, and left it in, since it's not hard to replicate.
I remember that bug. Sometimes there were some other weird effects, like when you crash your car will go flying high up into the air for a long time, and then fall down again. From the cockpit view you will then get a great overview over the track. :)
A friend of mine and I used to try and make tracks SO complicated you would get lost on them and not be able to complete the race. We would then give them to each other and see how we did. Did you know there was a hidden mode on the editor that allowed you to edit the TERRAIN? Yup. :)
There was loads of bugs in the game that did some really crazy things. Like the "helicopter" .. which I cant recall for the life of me what you do, but basically it made the car take off high into the air and then crash down like a minute or two later.
I must be one of those guys who didn't find out what the bug was until i read the description.

You can create this bug in a single loop-de-loop.
(Just go in on an angle so you circle around endlessly)
You can also do a lot more fun stuff with this bug like take off and fly like a helicopter into the air.
