Question: I am making shutters out of pine wood. Once I condition my pine wood, then stain it, do I need to seal it since it will be outside in the weather? Or can you buy stain that acts a sealer as well? Thankyou for the help
Thank you for sharing Tim...I built some recessed panel cabinet doors and the stickers..(styles\rails)..were pine..I used a raised panel bit on my router table to get the profile....I used a stain conditioner..non-to mention the brand but it sounds like winwax...when I stained the portion that was end grain it came out blotchy...on all the doors..any tips for end grain staining where you have to you have to use a panel raising bit across the grain?..thanks again for your expertise!!
I can't believe water would work. It would raise the grain. Why not try it, and report back. Tape a video of the entire process just as I did and upload it as a video response to mine. I'll approve it to show all.
@omegapointil water can be used when you are using a water based dye stain
and you can spray water on the wood to pre rais the grain before you apply any water based finish, a quick 220 grit sanding will clear up the raised grain in no time
When I used a pre-sanding sealer on pine, I was never able to get the Minwax Early American stain dark enough, even after multiple coats. Obviously I put too much sealer, but I don't know how to control that. I did it exactly like you did in the video. More information would be helpful.
nice one buddy!

I heard you can use water and it works just as well as conditioner. Is sanding between absolutely necessary?
thanks

With soft woods, if you sand with a 120 grit and as high as 180 on the end grain before you stain you will get a nice even colour.
Rosewood might be worth of a conditioner and cherry as they teand to not take stain even no matter what you do.

What other woods would you use it on?

Any wood. Always test the effect on a scrap piece of the wood. Do the test just as I did in the video so you see the with and without effect.

When you wipe them off, does the towel have any chemical on it or you just use a plain towel.

When wiping the stain, you bet the towel or rag has chemicals on it!
