  • I'm in love with Imelda! ^_^

  • Jeff killed it!! Wow- can you say vocal harmonizer? sounds cool though!

Ah-when songs had chord changes and great melodys.

  • WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN? I like Imelda May... how did I miss this??? Guess I don't like watching recording industry posturing and failed to tune in for the good bits.

  • youre saying Jeff is Rusty?!?!? Are you out of your flipping mind?

  • I just might have to start paying attention to the grammy show again!

these guys were so tight on so many levels...

  • this song always gives me the chills, it's so beautiful. they did it proud.

  • thank god for Jeff Beck. I used to sit on the floor trying to play along with Blow by Blow and Wired then saw him with Jan Hammer as a teenager. I met Les Paul at one of his NYC gigs in the 90's and he signed my guitar, played a great set and drank beer with all of us afterwards.

  • @LimoWreck00

Please come have a visit to Guitar Insight.

    Your crowd my friend.

  • Was that Darryl Higham playing Mary Ford's part on rhythm guitar?

  • You get the cigar!! It sure was, Darryl Higham is married to Imelda May.

  • I didn't know that...thanks!

Many people don't realise, but Mary wasn't just a great singer, she was also a very fine guitarist in her own right and actually held down the guitar spot in a number of Jazz and swing bands.

  • wow! this tribute to L.P. is amazing. Both Jeff and Imelda should without question get into the studio immediately and bang out a CD of music along these lines, what a solid combination.. HOLY SHIT!!! F------ amazing, this blew the roof off the grammy show, second to none!!!!!!

  • This performance made taylor swifts performance look like a joke.

  • very good version

  • Jeez.....this daughter of St Patrick is just so gooooood ! Plus Jeff played right out of his skin. I reckon this was the performance of their lives.

  • Best version ever of this song. And a breakthrough for Imelda. A lot of people, me included, were introduced to her from this performance. Now I've got tickets to see her in Nashville, TN.

  • I bet Jeff loved every second of that, playing all those great Les Paul parts note for note and paying a big tribute to one of his biggest influences..Great stuff!!

  • Wow - haven't seen a Les Paul in Jeff's hands in years!

  • Beck very good.

  • she's so gorgeous !!! Waow

  • a fitting tribute to the pioneers of rock n roll

  • Channeled andUPDATED Les Paul and Mary Ford! She is limited only by her management. She could go very, very big......tho I am not convinced that is what she wants......she is just unlimited in her potential.......

  • freaking incredible song. i love it. cant get over it actually

  • well done imelda may-from a fellow dublin fan,what a classy lady

  • Came here to watch Beck but I cannot stop watching Imelda . Is she smokin or what ?

  • maybe it's because she's so gorgeous and talented ?

  • Smokin' hot in many respects!

  • What a wonderful tribute to Les Paul. I love how Imelda used multiple recorded harmonies to get that rich velvety sound from her amazing performance.

  • Les Paul recorded his wife singing this song with about 15 or 16 tracks on the original...they recreated the sound from the old one pretty well

  • So good. Fitting tribute to the master.

  • Watch over Beck's shoulder at the video of LP playing. 1:52 in particular is nice.

  • That was fantastic.

  • It's a Les Paul cover, he played some of his lines too. I believe that's why he used a LP on this

  • Well done Imelda!

  • Sure, Les didn't play too many Strats, and Mary Ford didn't go on TV very often in a please-jump-me-now-dress. Imelda, may I?

  • I may be an old fart but that's talent displayed by Imelda May and Jeff Beck

  • Just shows Jeff knows his way 'round a Les Paul as well as a Fender Strat!

  • R.I.P. Les Paul!

  • jeff becks a great guitarist but i think they shouldve used jimmy page because hes the most famous les paul player

  • Perhaps Jimmy Paige is the most famous Les Paul player, but Jeff Beck definitely has Les Paul's style down! I LOVED this! This was the high point of the whole grammy show for me. If Imelda and Jeff headline a Les Paul tribute tour, I will follow!

  • @xXxEdInGtOnxXx They needed the better player, so they picked Jeff :)

  • @AxisofJustice21 jeff is probally technically the better player but jimmy page has had a bigger impact but why argue lets just say both are awesome

  • Wish there was a studio version of this. There's not right?

  • One of the best performances of the night!

  • Nice performance. Pity they couldn't have appreciated Les like this while he was still alive

  • They did.

  • @frankysandwich He has a freakin guitar named after him you think he wasnt appreciated?

  • Comment removed

  • PROPS!!! What a Brilliant cover!!! And b4 any haters start in... ask yerself this... how many technical innovations did JB create compared to LP... they are both gifted guitarists. but Les Paul invented the stuff that made the 'sound' possible...and THAT'S what makes the difference.

  • Yes!!!! This was the antidote to that awful performance by Taylor Swift.

Gorgeous resolution, btw. Thanks for posting!

  • Is that Tal playing bass?

  • @salm37 Not Tal W., (Help Me) Rhonda Smith. From JB's Website: "Accompanying Beck at these special engagements, as well as the World ('10) Tour, will be a brand new touring band, including the Grammy award winning producer and songwriter, Narada Michael Walden on drums, Rhonda Smith on bass and Jason Rebello...."

  • I did not watch the Grammy's show since all of the awards for the quality music are presented at smaller functions but I'm sure glad that someone had the idea to put these two together in a great tribute to LP. Thanks so much to whoever put this video on youtube. Fan-f=ing-tastic

  • Loved it when I first saw it. Great honor for Les Paul.

  • 100% classy!

  • Great tone proves it can be a new Gibson and still sound good. There are vintage Les Pauls that do not sound and play as good as the many of the newer ones. I own both 1958 Standard, 1957 Custom, and newer Custom shop Les Pauls. I have a 1997 and a 2006 that sound better than my 1958 and 1957 and play better as well!

  • Never heard of Ms. May, but she did a very respectable tribute to Mary Ford's voice, and Jeff seemed as on, if not even moreso than usual, as ever! He's said in interviews that his strats are more challenging to play compared to his Les Pauls, I love his strat sound, but am I the only one who'd like to see him use a Les Paul a bit more after seeing this?

  • No, I am glad he is using a Les Paul too!

  • @pieman419 Hi, Imelda May, is from Dublin Ireland, she has a voice like chocolate melting on a violin, check some of her tracks, cool girl, and good fun to be with....

  • First, Jeff Beck (of all the 60's rock guitar icons) is the last man standing, and in the end proved to be THE most musically versatile, technically proficient and soulfully talented guy of them all. (...and he NAILED that guitar part of Les's almost note for note!)

Second, as with most things Beck, this REEKS of class. I'd not heard of Ms. May, but she was astounding. Style once again rears it's head!

  • What a perfect pairing of major talent...CLASSIC!!

  • To the doubters:

From the woman herself from her Myspace blog:

"Just as she did, to highlight Les Pauls multi tracking discoveries, I pre recorded four and five part harmonies on to a backing track and then sang along to them the lead vocal live at the Grammys."

Now shut the fuck up ye pedantic whiny bitches.

  • This tune has been in my head since I seen them do it on The Grammy's Beck is awesome and she is dynamite!

  • Not only was this the best performance of the night, they performed at a differnt level from the others, after watching them i'd say they "struck a chord"-- a very special performance and great tribute to Les Paul indeed.

  • Gosh, I loved this soooo much. Such a good tribute! Perfect Cover!

  • This is just so GREAT!!!

  • Killer! And Narada on Drums!

  • Forgot to add that I'm an old rocker, but because of this performance I ordered a Les Paul and Mary Ford CD to hear what great music from the '40's and '50's was like. Just wonderful stuff.

  • As a performing guitarist, when that tune was over I turned to my wife and said: "Jeff Beck nailed it!" Very few can play in the Les Paul Style. Jeff did it with fingers and Les did it with a pick! This was the highlight of the whole evening to me. After hearing the precious and lovely Taylor Swift sing flat all night it was refreshing to hear Imelda and Jeff sing and play so well.

  • great guitar work

  • Go on the Imelda!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great quality picture and sound on this clip

  • amazing how far shes come from being born in the liberties

  • i got the chills when i saw this. and im 14 i love it :D

  • This was amazing one out of 3 of my favorite performnances from the show! Excellent guitar and singing!!!

  • I enjoyed this better than anything else. Very well done. I have to comment that Dirtball guy sure lives up to his name! LOL! Class act.

  • Best performance of the night!

  • That actually brought tears to my eyes. Where Les is All of our great Grand father, Jeff is our grand father...and this young lady brings the flavor...I just love that Jeff BRINGS it no matter matter generation or style...Pure class...And this young lady seems to recognize that..much like Tal!

  • I hadn't heard this song in many years, and now I remember what a great song it is! And, this arrangement is as good as the original! I'd never heard of Imelda May until now, but she has a great voice! Of course anyone who's been around awhile knows about Jeff Beck's talents, which he obviously still has! He's usually a strat player, but I guess if you're going to play a tribute to the man who invented the Les Paul, then you'd better play the guitar model that he invented! :-)

  • LONG LIVE LES PAUL & JEFF BECK!! Grammys 2010 - singular highlight moment... as for the rest of y'all... "Don't call us - we'll call you!"

  • Is this a tribute to Les Paul? Because if it is, it's done very well on both Jeff Beck and who ever the lead singer is!!!

  • Her name is Imelda May. I recommend her album. She has a beautiful voice.

  • How gorgeous is this woman? DAY-UM!!

  • Beck played it just like Paul and her multi-tracked vocals were true to the original recording. Don't know how they do that live but I like it.

  • Because of youtube, you can watch the few minutes of the Grammys that wasn't a mindless waste of time.

  • A perfect tribute. Incredible!

  • wow great!!!!! she looks cool!!!!! the dress

    is very cool.....

  • Jeff is good, but look for the version by Manhattan Transfer with guitar by Wayne Johnson.

    No comparison at all.

  • Don't forget the original is -quite- hot.

  • Jeff is good?

    LOL,OK, whatever Bubba...

Who the fuck is Wayne Johnson when he's at home? And was he Les Paul's favorite guitarist also?

    Didn't think so...

  • Obviously your drug addiction has prohibited you from listening to Wayne Johnson's version, live, with the Manhattan Transfer. It's on the Bop Do Wop album.

Your "Weenie Favorites" aside, the proof is in the listening. He blows Beck's performance into the cheap seats.

  • @ranran19701

oh no no no he does not blow Beck away. Yes, he's a fine guitarist but DOES HE ROCK? Not like Mr. Beck

  • nobody can touch Beck . Ever

  • @5Cincinnatus

how bout his wife or girlfriend??

    XD

  • indeed

  • Ya come on the Irish she did us proud she was brilliant , you no shes the only second Irish artiest to play the Grammys (u2 are the other ones). I love what she is wearing when you look as good as she does you can ware anything and look amazing!!

  • @151Sharon

    What about Sinead O'Connor?

  • Go On The Irish

  • @madblondie101

What's wrong with what she's wearing? I think the gold dress looks really good on her. Did you make a similar comment on Lady Gaga?

  • just to confirm

her style isn't my thing nd haters back off!!!

  • Comment removed

  • idiot

  • On Imelda ya legend :)

  • it fills my deepest neathers with glee. It's great to see her and he doing the Grammys.

Rockabillys due to have its age in the USA.

    mark these words.

  • AHHHH!

    Imelda yer makin us proud!

     Gowaaaaan!

    xx

  • I've watched this about 25 times now .The wife says I have a crush on Imelda May.

  • I think if my wife sees me watching this video one more time she'll have the same concern. I don't blame her....she's hot

  • Go on Imelda!

  • there's hope for real music after all!! i'm sick & tired of those beyonce, eminem, lady gaga, taylor swift, etc outdoing themselves with gaudy ridiculous outfits and performances.

    imelda's like a breath of fresh air,aaahhhhh.....!!!!

  • I agree as far as what music i prefer, but actually Les Paul is "to blame" for much of what you hate about the new stuff. In a sense, not 'real' at all: Filled with multi-tracked overdubs, echoed notes that were 'played' by the tape itself rather than the guitarist, & sped up passages to make the riffs faster than they were actually played. (I'm talking about Les's records, not this performance.) I repeat: I LOVE it! Nonetheless, the art of illusion is the foundation of this music.

  • theres a new musical babe in town and shes irish!

    move over beyonce

    Imelda has arrived!!!

  • go on imelda, our attempts at TV might, for the greatest part, suck ass. But irish output to the music industry is as refreshing as always.

Jeff Beck still rockin out with his cock out. Cause we've ended as lovers still gets me

  • Blown away by how great Beck still is. Plus captivated by the singer I had no idea of who she was until that night. An all around no-lose.

  • this was the only performance I liked. Just straight forward music, no fancy dancers, and effects, just music!

  • The only musical performance at the Grammys this year, lol. Jeff Beck is so bad-ass, man.

  • Totally agree!

  • Damn ! boy can play Paul!

    jeff beck still Fing rocks

Imelda you got Mary down pat too

My parents turned me onto LP and MF when i was a pup

  • Loved loved loved this! Probably the best performance at the Grammys.

  • Agreed!

  • Sequin knows her stuff!

  • Thank you- I'd like to think so. Imelda's a personal friend but even if she wasn't I'd be a massive fan of hers! I made the gold dress : )

  • Very cool. Nice work.

  • dirtballjohnny: please bestow some more of your awesome wisdom upon us. Obviously, the other 80 plus comments here are wrong. You must know what you talking about.

  • Never heard of her. She's good....BUT.... I came to watch the master of the six string. Go JB!! WOOT!

  • Comment removed

  • I wish I could find a MP3 of this. The performance was excellent!

  • Didn't they mention that the performances were available through iTunes?

  • Oh dear, troll alert! Anyone who has seen Imelda live- or indeed looked her up on youtube- knows she certainly isn't a robot. Jeff is indeed great and wouldn't have personally have insisted on having Imelda sing if he didn't think she was too. He's a HUGE fan of hers.

  • Actually, Imelda's timing was better than Jeff's. He did some weird stuff that would throw many singers & musicians off, (Sounded like a mistake), but she counted her way though the track & landed on her feet w/grace & soul. Les Paul & Mary Ford, the original performers of this arrangement, (virtually identical except for the guitar solos), MADE 'robotic' music: Double, triple, & quadruple-overdubbed vocals & guitar parts. If you don't like this, then you just don't like this kind of music.

  • I don't think the original had drums. None that I can hear anyway.

  • Yeah, you're right. The drums here are sparse enough to not meaningfully change the arrangement, but still, you're right.

  • Also he DID get an award. That's why he was at the Grammys. Not a big one for research, are you? : )

  • She's Singin Live!

    She Is That Gud!

I've Heard Her A few Times Live Before and She's class! :D

  • NO IT ISN'T- READ THE COMMENTS BELOW!

  • Love the drummer....oh yes Imelda is fabulous and Jeff is masterful....a gorgeous delicious team! I want more!

  • Yeah, the drummer's energy is contagious. Love his expressions. Great lyrics and good crisp performance from Beck.

  • Has anyone every saw Jeff Beck and Richard Belzer in the same room? Didn't know Belzer could play the guitar...

  • Jeff Beck, aka, Mister Tasty Tone, timing titan, and the absolute apogee of guitar coolness.

  • I'm obsessed with this song!!! Those two are magnetic on stage. Pleaseeee put this track on itunes PRONTO!

  • Jeff Beck definitely deserves an A for effort. A 65 year old man thats played on Les Paul's for years moving and dancing around with basically a small tree strapped around him. Major back trauma lol.

  • Aah.. The Les Paul's not that heavy. It's a fairly respectable hunk of wood, I will grant you that.

  • @horowizard At least a GOOD ONE isn't that heavy !

  • Imelda is amazing, never miss a gig wen she plays at home in Dublin and really hope she gets the same reception in the states as she gets at home in Ireland, she deserves it...pure talent! :D

  • Nice touch to have Jeff Beck. He can rock he can roll and he can boogie.

His be-bop chops could have used another couple days of practice. The solo falls apart after about 12 bars. But A for effort.

There was only one Les Paul!

  • les paul is dead what are you all on about!! thats jeff beck

  • it was a tribute to Les Paul...LOL

  • haha oh right!!

  • Les Paul deserved much more than 2 minutes... But an amazing performance.

  • Especially from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences!

Without Les Paul, they wouldn't exist!

  • Can't believe imelda played at the Grammy's... I've been to a gig of hers and can definitely say she's not syncing, she has a phenomenal voice.

  • Fonzie did a great job

  • Great song. Beck's licks were classy.

  • complaining about lipsynching? Imelda is singing to a back track which is what Les Paul bloody invented to get this sound.... Wonderful performance, fair play to Beck as he insisted that Imelda do this instead of anyother artist. Imelda could be huge in the US as she is an incredible artist.

  • This could be the exposure Imelda May needs to get a good audience in the States. I saw her videos here on Youtube and I am impressed. I hope her records get released here in the Philipines.

  • i like it at 1:49 where she is synced up with the video in the background of Les & Mary.

  • Pure class. Les was smiling

  • This was by far the best tribute performance of the night. Nice that Jeff didn't turn it into a self-righteous, drawn out, blowhard performance, which is what 99% of today's guitarists would have done. Props to Imelda. I'm a fan.

  • the name of the song!?!?!??!

  • @giilkgm "How High The Moon"

  • How high the moon its in the title retard

  • The video is off a bit, she is really singing. For some of us who were here in the fifties she may also be singing into a synthesizer for the harmony. Look at her videos on the net, she is the real deal. Best part of the show. What a treat to see Jeff Beck play. Also recommend Mary Ford and Les Paul doing the original version.

  • It was a great rendition and I thought it stayed well in the spirit and mood of the original.

  • hot stuff...class act...love it......

  • what ke is this in?

  • This song was performed in the key of A, as was the original. I know 'cause I've been playing my piano along with it for 3 days now. Must try to stop soon.

  • @deanscovell

    A major right?

i wanna get it by ear :p
