thank god for Jeff Beck. I used to sit on the floor trying to play along with Blow by Blow and Wired then saw him with Jan Hammer as a teenager. I met Les Paul at one of his NYC gigs in the 90's and he signed my guitar, played a great set and drank beer with all of us afterwards.
Many people don't realise, but Mary wasn't just a great singer, she was also a very fine guitarist in her own right and actually held down the guitar spot in a number of Jazz and swing bands.
wow! this tribute to L.P. is amazing. Both Jeff and Imelda should without question get into the studio immediately and bang out a CD of music along these lines, what a solid combination.. HOLY SHIT!!! F------ amazing, this blew the roof off the grammy show, second to none!!!!!!
Best version ever of this song. And a breakthrough for Imelda. A lot of people, me included, were introduced to her from this performance. Now I've got tickets to see her in Nashville, TN.
I bet Jeff loved every second of that, playing all those great Les Paul parts note for note and paying a big tribute to one of his biggest influences..Great stuff!!
Channeled andUPDATED Les Paul and Mary Ford! She is limited only by her management. She could go very, very big......tho I am not convinced that is what she wants......she is just unlimited in her potential.......
Perhaps Jimmy Paige is the most famous Les Paul player, but Jeff Beck definitely has Les Paul's style down! I LOVED this! This was the high point of the whole grammy show for me. If Imelda and Jeff headline a Les Paul tribute tour, I will follow!
PROPS!!! What a Brilliant cover!!! And b4 any haters start in... ask yerself this... how many technical innovations did JB create compared to LP... they are both gifted guitarists. but Les Paul invented the stuff that made the 'sound' possible...and THAT'S what makes the difference.
@salm37 Not Tal W., (Help Me) Rhonda Smith. From JB's Website: "Accompanying Beck at these special engagements, as well as the World ('10) Tour, will be a brand new touring band, including the Grammy award winning producer and songwriter, Narada Michael Walden on drums, Rhonda Smith on bass and Jason Rebello...."
I did not watch the Grammy's show since all of the awards for the quality music are presented at smaller functions but I'm sure glad that someone had the idea to put these two together in a great tribute to LP. Thanks so much to whoever put this video on youtube. Fan-f=ing-tastic
Great tone proves it can be a new Gibson and still sound good. There are vintage Les Pauls that do not sound and play as good as the many of the newer ones. I own both 1958 Standard, 1957 Custom, and newer Custom shop Les Pauls. I have a 1997 and a 2006 that sound better than my 1958 and 1957 and play better as well!
Never heard of Ms. May, but she did a very respectable tribute to Mary Ford's voice, and Jeff seemed as on, if not even moreso than usual, as ever! He's said in interviews that his strats are more challenging to play compared to his Les Pauls, I love his strat sound, but am I the only one who'd like to see him use a Les Paul a bit more after seeing this?
@pieman419 Hi, Imelda May, is from Dublin Ireland, she has a voice like chocolate melting on a violin, check some of her tracks, cool girl, and good fun to be with....
First, Jeff Beck (of all the 60's rock guitar icons) is the last man standing, and in the end proved to be THE most musically versatile, technically proficient and soulfully talented guy of them all. (...and he NAILED that guitar part of Les's almost note for note!)
Second, as with most things Beck, this REEKS of class. I'd not heard of Ms. May, but she was astounding. Style once again rears it's head!
"Just as she did, to highlight Les Pauls multi tracking discoveries, I pre recorded four and five part harmonies on to a backing track and then sang along to them the lead vocal live at the Grammys."
Not only was this the best performance of the night, they performed at a differnt level from the others, after watching them i'd say they "struck a chord"-- a very special performance and great tribute to Les Paul indeed.
Forgot to add that I'm an old rocker, but because of this performance I ordered a Les Paul and Mary Ford CD to hear what great music from the '40's and '50's was like. Just wonderful stuff.
As a performing guitarist, when that tune was over I turned to my wife and said: "Jeff Beck nailed it!" Very few can play in the Les Paul Style. Jeff did it with fingers and Les did it with a pick! This was the highlight of the whole evening to me. After hearing the precious and lovely Taylor Swift sing flat all night it was refreshing to hear Imelda and Jeff sing and play so well.
That actually brought tears to my eyes. Where Les is All of our great Grand father, Jeff is our grand father...and this young lady brings the flavor...I just love that Jeff BRINGS it no matter matter generation or style...Pure class...And this young lady seems to recognize that..much like Tal!
I hadn't heard this song in many years, and now I remember what a great song it is! And, this arrangement is as good as the original! I'd never heard of Imelda May until now, but she has a great voice! Of course anyone who's been around awhile knows about Jeff Beck's talents, which he obviously still has! He's usually a strat player, but I guess if you're going to play a tribute to the man who invented the Les Paul, then you'd better play the guitar model that he invented! :-)
Obviously your drug addiction has prohibited you from listening to Wayne Johnson's version, live, with the Manhattan Transfer. It's on the Bop Do Wop album.
Your "Weenie Favorites" aside, the proof is in the listening. He blows Beck's performance into the cheap seats.
Ya come on the Irish she did us proud she was brilliant , you no shes the only second Irish artiest to play the Grammys (u2 are the other ones). I love what she is wearing when you look as good as she does you can ware anything and look amazing!!
there's hope for real music after all!! i'm sick & tired of those beyonce, eminem, lady gaga, taylor swift, etc outdoing themselves with gaudy ridiculous outfits and performances.
imelda's like a breath of fresh air,aaahhhhh.....!!!!
I agree as far as what music i prefer, but actually Les Paul is "to blame" for much of what you hate about the new stuff. In a sense, not 'real' at all: Filled with multi-tracked overdubs, echoed notes that were 'played' by the tape itself rather than the guitarist, & sped up passages to make the riffs faster than they were actually played. (I'm talking about Les's records, not this performance.) I repeat: I LOVE it! Nonetheless, the art of illusion is the foundation of this music.

Oh dear, troll alert! Anyone who has seen Imelda live- or indeed looked her up on youtube- knows she certainly isn't a robot. Jeff is indeed great and wouldn't have personally have insisted on having Imelda sing if he didn't think she was too. He's a HUGE fan of hers.
Actually, Imelda's timing was better than Jeff's. He did some weird stuff that would throw many singers & musicians off, (Sounded like a mistake), but she counted her way though the track & landed on her feet w/grace & soul. Les Paul & Mary Ford, the original performers of this arrangement, (virtually identical except for the guitar solos), MADE 'robotic' music: Double, triple, & quadruple-overdubbed vocals & guitar parts. If you don't like this, then you just don't like this kind of music.
Jeff Beck definitely deserves an A for effort. A 65 year old man thats played on Les Paul's for years moving and dancing around with basically a small tree strapped around him. Major back trauma lol.
Imelda is amazing, never miss a gig wen she plays at home in Dublin and really hope she gets the same reception in the states as she gets at home in Ireland, she deserves it...pure talent! :D
complaining about lipsynching? Imelda is singing to a back track which is what Les Paul bloody invented to get this sound.... Wonderful performance, fair play to Beck as he insisted that Imelda do this instead of anyother artist. Imelda could be huge in the US as she is an incredible artist.
This could be the exposure Imelda May needs to get a good audience in the States. I saw her videos here on Youtube and I am impressed. I hope her records get released here in the Philipines.
This was by far the best tribute performance of the night. Nice that Jeff didn't turn it into a self-righteous, drawn out, blowhard performance, which is what 99% of today's guitarists would have done. Props to Imelda. I'm a fan.
The video is off a bit, she is really singing. For some of us who were here in the fifties she may also be singing into a synthesizer for the harmony. Look at her videos on the net, she is the real deal. Best part of the show. What a treat to see Jeff Beck play. Also recommend Mary Ford and Les Paul doing the original version.
This song was performed in the key of A, as was the original. I know 'cause I've been playing my piano along with it for 3 days now. Must try to stop soon.
I'm in love with Imelda! ^_^

horowizard 2 years ago
Yeah, you're right. The drums here are sparse enough to not meaningfully change the arrangement, but still, you're right.

Also he DID get an award. That's why he was at the Grammys. Not a big one for research, are you? : )

Yeah, the drummer's energy is contagious. Love his expressions. Great lyrics and good crisp performance from Beck.

Has anyone every saw Jeff Beck and Richard Belzer in the same room? Didn't know Belzer could play the guitar...

Jeff Beck, aka, Mister Tasty Tone, timing titan, and the absolute apogee of guitar coolness.

Jeff Beck definitely deserves an A for effort. A 65 year old man thats played on Les Paul's for years moving and dancing around with basically a small tree strapped around him. Major back trauma lol.
joshdill 2 years ago
Aah.. The Les Paul's not that heavy. It's a fairly respectable hunk of wood, I will grant you that.
horowizard 2 years ago
@horowizard At least a GOOD ONE isn't that heavy !

Imelda is amazing, never miss a gig wen she plays at home in Dublin and really hope she gets the same reception in the states as she gets at home in Ireland, she deserves it...pure talent! :D

Nice touch to have Jeff Beck. He can rock he can roll and he can boogie.
His be-bop chops could have used another couple days of practice. The solo falls apart after about 12 bars. But A for effort.
There was only one Les Paul!

Can't believe imelda played at the Grammy's... I've been to a gig of hers and can definitely say she's not syncing, she has a phenomenal voice.

Fonzie did a great job

Great song. Beck's licks were classy.
manitou2010 2 years ago 2
complaining about lipsynching? Imelda is singing to a back track which is what Les Paul bloody invented to get this sound.... Wonderful performance, fair play to Beck as he insisted that Imelda do this instead of anyother artist. Imelda could be huge in the US as she is an incredible artist.

This could be the exposure Imelda May needs to get a good audience in the States. I saw her videos here on Youtube and I am impressed. I hope her records get released here in the Philipines.

i like it at 1:49 where she is synced up with the video in the background of Les & Mary.

Classy comment. Couldn't agree more. Best part of the entire Grammy night.
steveb777 2 years ago
This was by far the best tribute performance of the night. Nice that Jeff didn't turn it into a self-righteous, drawn out, blowhard performance, which is what 99% of today's guitarists would have done. Props to Imelda. I'm a fan.

The video is off a bit, she is really singing. For some of us who were here in the fifties she may also be singing into a synthesizer for the harmony. Look at her videos on the net, she is the real deal. Best part of the show. What a treat to see Jeff Beck play. Also recommend Mary Ford and Les Paul doing the original version.

It was a great rendition and I thought it stayed well in the spirit and mood of the original.

This song was performed in the key of A, as was the original. I know 'cause I've been playing my piano along with it for 3 days now. Must try to stop soon.
