ya know i always wondered id the cowboy junkies took their name from Van Zandts Cowboy Junkies Lament. also anyone that liked this, should get Steve Earle's album Townes. in Earle's own words, "he taught me every thing i know, good and Bad.
Listening to Townes' lyrics can be an epiphany moment. Seeing the Cowboy Junkies is almost always a mind/heart epiphany. Somehow the 'flowery' in Margo's singing always makes the creepy lyrics and sounds of Michael's songs gorgeous. Clearly from interviews with both - the Junkies and Townes blessed each other's worlds and became great admirers. The Junkies have done many gorgeous covers of great songwriters - dig a bit, it's worth it. I dare you to see Misguided Angel live and not choke up.
Townes' last name was actually spelled Van Zandt - the D is left out in the title here. I'm pointing this out in order to make it easier for viewers to find his music here and elsewhere.
Michael Timmins and Townes Van Zandt are two of my favorite song-writers, and "Lungs" is one of my favorite songs written by the latter.
I was at this set, just down front. An amazing and sad night, and I'm glad to know that video of such a great night exists. Junkies, JDG, Gillian Welch and David Rawlins... Among many...
Thanks so much for posting this. What a night....
I disagree. As a life-long fan of Cowboy Junkies, I've met Margo many times and she certainly did not act like a "star" - she and her band-mates always treated their fans kindly and respectfully, as equals, when I saw them. Michael even took the time to show me how to play one of their songs once.
Yes, Margo's style is different from Townes' style. I think that covers SHOULD be a different take on the original version, stylistically, but this is a matter of personal opinion.
Secondly, please keep in mind that Cowboy Junkies toured with Townes Van Zandt and became good friends with him. They wrote songs for each other. Since that tour, Cowboy Junkies have frequently mentioned his inspirational contribution to their work, and their appreciation for him and his friendship.
So in this video they are paying their respects to a friend who they greatly admired, not long after he suddenly, unexpectedly passed away.
she decimated the lyrics, sorry. i like the cowboy junkies, but a cover tribute to a songwriter should leave the song intact

Townes wrote the song for the Junkies when he toured with them. The Junkies wrote Towne's Blues for him.

Flowery. Margot is too flowery. She is too much of a "star" for TVZ.
