  • Something to consider, with all the stars in the known universe there could be an average of a few hundred times that many planets and Earthlike planets outnumber higher massed ones. It has been projected that the universe could be 10^23 times wider in all directions than the known universe. The Earh is an amazing place though. We should do whatever we can to educate ourselves about this world and strengthen it though.

  • it's 1980, i checked it out

  • Both the cosmos and the internet are serious buisness

  • Even back then, they were talking about the effects of global warming.

  • Sagan predicted global warming like 30 years in advance.

  • @Nightmonkey17 I'm pretty sure global warming was an issue even back then. He probably didn't do the science that established the fact of man - made global warming either, but I'm sure he agreed with it, he was a scientist after all.

  • when was this made?

  • @Paalfaal I'm thinking early 80s, but I'm not sure. I've yet to hear from the person who put up these videos, though.

  • this guy was way ahead of his time... on everything

  • Do we impact our planet? Of course we do. GoogleEarth and zoom in almost anywhere on land and humanity's footprint is there. With an atmosphere merely a few miles thick one need not be a scientist to fathom how much impact potential we possess.

    This is a TINY planet.

So small, we have people who walk across continents for the fun of it.

It is up to us to save the 'pale blue dot.'

  • @OneWorldHistory I don't mean to rain sulfuric acid on your parade, but the Earth's atmosphere is actually around 300 miles thick.

  • I like that music in the begiing, it's so dramatic and makes you wonder about it all. Anyone know the name of it or where to find it? Thanks.

  • @goreziad

There's a variety of music that I recognize - parts of The Rite of Spring for example.

  • @JohnColt thank you thats also a nice piece. but i meant in the beginning with that chorus?

  • @goreziad------- The Music of Cosmos by Vangelis

  • @MusiColReid thank you but not that one, the music from 0:00 to 1:15? anyone know that one?

  • We are working on 3 of the 4

  • Our real problem is energy consumption... At this rate we will soon burn off all oil, coal and gas we have... And then what?

There is already another cold war starting over resources left near the poles and in Africa and south America...

I doubt that global warming will have time to get us before we kill ourselves over the last resources...

  • He would ask the scientific community to readdress their previous findings and uncover where the data was misinterpreted.

The Earth regulates itself quite well, we are powerless to upend it. But when the Earth decides we are no longer necessary, that's when we should be alarmed. And global warming is a fine example of the Earth deciding it's time for a fever. It's not human in origin, that's the big failing of the scientific community. But it's certainly real, and bodes ill for our species.

  • ha, venusians who drove fuel inefficient cars

  • There is no such thing as "man made global warming." Humans make a significant impact on the world by cutting down its forests an killing its animals but the co2 we spew out is not a problem.

Less then 1% of the total co2 production comes from humans compared to the oceans themselves for example is minuscule.

I don't know why the public opinion is diverted to this non- existent issue. We should really focus on saving the forests and animals instead of something we have no influence on.

  • Deforestation is a factor in 'man made global warming', ergo, there is such a thing as man made global warming.

Human CO2 production is more than 1% from what I understand, but regardless, multiply that by 150 years of industrial activity, and there's now a lot more CO2 in the atmosphere than nature had to deal with in the previous thousands of years.

The scientific opinion isn't divided and the issue is very much existent. Public opinion is divided because it's ill-informed or ignorant.

  • dzikv01: Less than one percent of alcohol in your bloodstream would make you drunk as hell. It's not about quantity, but about the intrisic properties, the quality, of a substance's effect on a system.

  • Funny... Did you know that water vapour (steam) is the no.1 global warming pollutant on earth? Maybe we should stop sweating or get rid of all the water then?

"Human made global warming" is just a huge money scam and recently it comes into the light as every bad lie always does (the British scientist e-mails). Please people don't be fooled by it!

The oil we have now was once in the form of plants covering the earth in huge lush jungles! Earth did not become a desert then did it?

  • I wouldn't call water vapour a "pollutant", but sure, it has the strongest green house effect. So what? Not something unknown to scientists (or me, for that matter). I don't know why you'd think that scientists are unaware of that or ignore it or whatever (maybe you think they're so dumb compared to you?).

The thing is, we're discussing HMGW here. The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is very stable, we do not produce "extra water", as we do CO2 and other greenhouse gases..

  • Are you a meteologist (sic)? Please inform us of your credentials before you start rallying against a robust scientific concensus that disagrees.

  • thank you i cringe every time i see someone mention "global warming" if you ever wanna see the power of the media just look into the global warming scare, its kinda depressing

  • At this rate future generations will be fucked, maybe this one who knows

  • This makes me question my view on global warming totally. For a long while I believed that global warming could not possibly effect us so greatly to be a problem. But now seeing how fragile life is, I now question it.

  • Just awsome!!! RIP Dr. Sagan!!!

  • What a beautiful program. Carl Sagan is an amazing teacher. Al Gore and the UN climate panel received a Nobel Peace Price some 25 years after scientists have been warning us about global climate change, and Carl Sagan said it in broad daylight on national television. The day that we begin to listen to scientists before we listen to politicians and theologists will be a good one...

  • Too bad the right wing cares more about the profits of oil companies.

  • If every one just had 5 kids then there would be no over population. LOL go research poverty stricken societies and thier birth rates.

  • It's very difficult to imagine our earth can be in catastraphy sometime, maybe soon. And yet many of us care about insignificant things more than this matter. But I still hold hope for our good will.

  • what da hell is that only 605 views..? if u look at Paris Hilton's sex tape ..god dam.. u will find at least more than Half Millions views...such a shame on this ppls..!!!.so sad..

  • Wait, Paris Hilton's sex tape is on Youtube!? eh. . . I have to go check my email guys. . . yes, that's it. . .

  • @SirNewt So not worth it...I actually found a copy of that a year or so after it got leaked and I swear, the girl is a complete zombie...she seems about as interested in sex as I would be in watching plants grow...

  • @chamkila2 your not on your own the distance of understanding is as muchas galaxies and paris but were linked dont give up the fight

  • @chamkila2 5,379 now

  • @chamkila2

I think he is hotter than paris hilton.

  • The four things he proposed is actually not a bad idea.

  • I watched this series as a kid and it's just as true and relevant then as it is now. I've been contemplating (for years) about why so few people seek out logic & reason in their world and I've come to the conclusion that it is because of willful ignorance and fear of a harsh reality. I was raised with neither, so I continue my work as amateur scientist and engineer to improve understanding and conditions for my fellow inhabitants regardless of the individual's demeanor. Carl Sagan is my idol.

  • I wish these all had more views.

  • So do I.

  • Thank you so much for posting these, SirNewt! I'm going to have to buy this series. I'm surprised I missed it as a kid...
