  • The music for the Good Bad Ugly was dope. But that movie is waaaaaaaay to long and everyone knows it. Ditto for Once Upon. The Unforgiven was, to me, the perfect blend of classic cinema and 90s film making and the culmination of a genre. I don't feel out of line calling it a much better film than The Searchers because it is. And Ridley's Scotts 'Gladiator' blows 'Spartacus' away. Both great films. Kubrick is probably the greatest director ever. But Gladiator was a much better film.

  • @rmed30 -Whatever!

  • Is it considered "not cool" to put 'The Unforgiven' on these lists. Personally, I think it is hands down, the best Western ever made. It is an absolutely flawless film. It is visually stunning, engaging, and has some of the best dialogue of any film of any genre. And it doesn't suffer from some of the shortcoming of old school Westerns. The Searchers was amazing but it was boring at parts. People don't like to admit that. Same thing can be said about Liberty Valence. And the music was CHEESEY!

  • @rmed30-Thanks For Sharing!

  • are yer not a fan of Segio Leone then?

  • @MegaCastigers- I Really Not a Fan of Spaghetti Westerns!

  • You have to add: 'The Horse Soldiers' (1959) and another John Ford masterpiece, as well

'Stagecoach' (1939), plus 'Lonely Are the Brave' (1962), and the original versions of

'3:10 to Yuma' and 'Gunfight at th OK Corral' And I agree, 'High Noon' should be on the list, too.

  • Come on guys!where is leone movies?!

  • Come on guys!where is sergio leone movies?

  • come on guys!where is leone movies?...the good the bad and the ungly!a fistful of dollars!once upon a time in west!for a few dollars more!MASTERPIECES!

  • Very nice list. WE agree on # 1.

  • @floridafyme -Thank You!!!!

  • really pretty good list.... though maybe make room for John Wayne's ..The Shootist ....but it would be tough to pick one to drop

  • Hey, my comment might not mean much to you guys, but i used to watch cowboy films with my Grandad when i was younger, and still today they cheer me, this guys sixteen, its her personal opinion, the most popular 'Good the Bad & the Ugly, Once Upon A time In the West, A Fistful Of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More?' are not always the best, give the kid a break.

  • Good bad ugly is easily my fave but good video by the way

  • I like how everyone's giving this guy crap over HIS top ten westerns. Does it say YOUR top ten up there? No, it doesn't. Now show some respect for the guy, he's just sharing his favorites. Just because he doesn't like some that many know about, doesn't mean you can start giving him shit about his opinion. These are his favorites, show respect.

  • @MikeEsex - Thank You Mike for being the voice of reason among us!!!!

  • @MikeEsex I couldn't agree with you more, Mike. Well said!

This is a interesting list, halbie71. Every title in your top 5 would make my personal list. While the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns were terrifically entertaining in their own way, they would not make my list either. In many respects, and for better or worse, the "Leone's" were anti-westerns, and represented the beginning-of-the-end of the iconic Westerns that dominated American culture for the first half of the last century.

  • The GOOD is I've Seen "The Good Bad & The Ugly" The BAD is it was not made in America, The Ugly is all these young guys who think it is a great western!

  • @halbie71 I have the 2003 DVD of Good, Bad and Ugly and it is an English version of the Italian version which had several more scenes including a couple with Clint Eastwood. It is a great western and probably has the best directed ending of any western. Another Leone film Once Upon a Time in America probably has one the best openings ever filmed. But the westerns you chose are great films too. Picking the 10 best westerns is difficult. As soon as I picked my 10, I thought of High Noon and others

  • @halbie71 hey! thats the first western movie i have seen, i have not seen any other western yet, but i think it is a very good film, don't you??

    PD: i'm "young" 18

what western films should i watch??

  • @halbie71 well they were made in the 60's so i doubt the main fans will be young. Plus the good the bad and the ugly and once upon a time in the west are alongside the Searchers and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid widely considered the best westerns ever made.

  • difficult to see a person that does not know an accident about western as the issuer of this unbelievable top ten (except the searchers): most are rubbish! try with other kind of movies...

  • @sergiopuppo - Your comments are RUBBISH!!!

  • very good ole' films, the good the bad and the ugly doesn't come in my top 100, and I like Eastwood, especially his later stuff, acting and directing.

  • All good films, but where the hell was 'High Noon'?

  • no young guns ?

  • @tisneylee Definately not, it isnt bad, its just not "Top ten" material

  • THE SEARCHERS is a true American masterpiece.

  • I agree. THE SEARCHERS is a true American masterpiece with layer upon layer of depth. John Ford was a genius.

  • Winchester 73 is an awesome movie.

  • Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid ???? !!!!

  • my favorite is THE WILD BUNCH 1969.

  • The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly???

  • @imrodokay - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!!!!!!

  • @halbie71 Have you heard of this film called the good the bad and the ugly?

  • was this video made before the Good the Bad & the Ugly, Once Upon A time In the West, A Fistful Of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More?

  • @TheCloneKid - It seems like all the young guys have this thing for spaghetti westerns for some reason!

  • I would have added the movies The Long Riders with all the Brothers, Keach,Carridine,Quaid, and Guest. I would have added High Noon. The 10 you selected were great films

  • @12Daniel7 Thank you, those are good movies!

  • exactly the right choice!!!

  • THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY will always win!!!!!!!!

  • 20: Winchester 73: 19: Tombstone: 18:Bad Company: 17: The Tin Star: 16:The Searchers: 15: Red River: 14:High Noon: 13:Stagecoach: 12: Once Upon a Time in the West: 11: For a Few Dollars More: 10 High Plains Drifter: 9 The Big Country: 8: Warlock: 7: The Outlaw Josey Wales: 6:The Magnificent Seven: 5 The Gunfighter: 4: The Long Riders: 3:Shane: 2: The Good the Bad and the Ugly:1 The Culpepper Cattle Companu

  • @staticmouse13 - The only movie I don't reconize is Bad Company.

  • @halbie71

It a 1972 western witha very young Jeff Bridges about a bunch of draft dodgers who engage in stealing hold ups etc . Has a great supporting cat of charactor actors, some of it is very funny but then it turns all serious all of a sudden as a youngster of about 12 steals a hot pie off a windowsill and as he is running away a bullet blows off the back of his head.

  • @staticmouse13 - Looks like a good movie, I'll make it my next Netflix movie, thank you!

  • @halbie71

Cool, I'm sure you won't be dissappointed, as you know yourself Jeff Bridges is quality. I think Robert Benton of Kramer v Kramer fame directed it. BTW i rustled up my top 20 quite quick and forgot about 'The Man who shot Liberty Valanc'e which is definitely in my top 10.

  • @staticmouse13 She wore yellow ribbon, custer of the west, soldier blue?

  • Good list, refreshing to see the classics get noticed for a change instead of a list top heavy with Leone and Peckinpah picked by kids who where told by their peers to watch only those westerns. My top 20 below

  • @staticmouse13 - I agree & also think the kids nowadays are more into violence, cruelty & sadism.

  • @halbie71

Thanks Halbie. Just posting my top 20 westerns now. Its a mixed bag of old and new. Would you regard 'Soldier Blue as a western? Did not know whether to include it but its quite violent and maybe not so good for non-adults. I know that some people will diss my list and thats fair enough. The Wild Bunch and The unforgiven are totally overrated imo.

  • There are a few here that wouldn't be on my list, but theya re all classic westerns. One I haven't seen on these lists is "Tombstone" which would be on my top 10...okay, maybe 12 or 13. I'll have to work on my own list.

  • culpepper cattle company would be in mine

  • Personally I found the TV miniseries "Lonesome Dove" to be the greatest western ever made.

  • This is a good list, but how can you not have "Unforgiven" or "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" on here?

  • Jimmy Stewart and the Duke, my faforite western actors

6 movies in the top ten with Jimmy and John, great !

    The Searchers top on,right !!!

  • Nice video and enjoyed it. Especially like your choice of music.

  • @yrtuag-Thank You!

  • Your list.HIGH NOON is my number 1.

  • No films that starred clint eastwood? come on man...

  • "Hombre" starring paul newman. numero uno on my list.

  • Best western ever is once upon a time in the west.....my opinion

  • Some good picks here but the Searchers has to go too racist for me, Not even close to what indian people are like. Woman were respected I know because I lisen to my elders and that I'm a native american from montana. 2nd one damn good movie Jeremiah Johnson one of my favorte Redford movies but not really a western but a Mountain Man adventure another one is the Mountain Men with B. Keith and C. Hesten (spelled wrong) for a good western from 1980 is the Long Riders.

  • No place for The Good The Bad and The Ugly ? With all respect and as John McCenroe says, " You can NOT be serious "

  • Some good picks, but is there a better western than Rio Bravo?

  • the man who shot liberty valance es the number one.

    The wild bunch??

  • Did you even consider Hondo?

  • @roadium - Hondo is Ok, but I would consider many more other John Wayne westerns before Hondo.

  • @roadium The trouble with a top ten western list, is that there are about 25 movies that should be on it!

  • @diptwares - Good Point!!!!

  • coole musik

  • Unforgiven should be there. Once upon a time in the west is the best western i have ever seen. The searchers is just a bit too racist for me. Sorry.

  • Duke Wayne's (I met him once so I can call him Duke ;-) ) homage to Harry Carey occurs at the end of the last scene from "Searchers," framed in the doorway with Careys widow one of the women in the house, the Duke uses a move that Carey employed regularly, and grabs his arm at the elbow.

Maybe there should be a category for the "Top Ten westerns You saw at the Drive-In."

  • Good list of the traditionals. I enjoy the spaghetti operas, but IMHO they just don't make the cut, certainly some of Eastwood's other Westerns do. Some 11th place finishers might include "Will Penney" Hestons greatest role, the original "3:10 to Yuma"" and "The Cowboys." Good job!!

  • Just watched the gunfighter for the first time, never watched westerns before but after that movie, wouldnt mind watching some more..so i thought i would look at some classics.

  • A good list from what I recognized, and it gave me a few to look up later. I must say, though, that I am an Eastwood fan. I'm glad The Magnificent Seven was on there, as that is one of my favorites, but what about the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? And The outlaw Josey Wales is not just my favorite Western, it is probably my favorite movie period. And what about John Wayne's True Grit?

  • can i just say that liking western movies that were made after the 1960's is O.K no one be ashamed! great films missing from this list- The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford,3:10 to Yuma (original AND remake both great films) UNFORGIVEN, Once upon a time in the west (arguably the best western ever made!)

fist full of dollars/good the bad and the ugly/few dollars more, Young guns (yes i said it! young guns!)

  • @klaos9999 Is there anybody, besides me, who remember "The Unforgiven " with Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn and Lillian Gish? A d**n good film along with those mentioned in your tribute. I'm nearing 65 and am lucky if I can remember all the westerns I have ever seen: Cattle Queen with Barbara Stanwyck, Johnny Guitar with Joan Crawford, Tribute to a Bad Man with James Cagney.... Good Lord, can you imagine if we could remember all the Saturday afternoons spent in the dark.

  • @beki611 One of my fav. films of that era , not a bad performance from Audie Murphy either, heres one for you young man,! The last challenge, with Glen Ford, what was its original title,??

  • I hate how Red River turns into such a rated G nonsensical mess near the end.

  • @mostcanwait So did Montgomery Clift

  • @halbie71 Any list with Winchester '73 and The Searchers is a very good list.

  • @reno93535 Thank You!

  • @halbie71 You're welcome. No wonder you know the best westerns. You're in your 50's like me. Have you seen High Noon?

  • @reno93535- Thank You! High Noon? Yes, good movie!!! The plot it seems to me was similar to what going on in Hollywood with Communist scare and all.

  • No clint eastwood movie. :(

  • Anyone remember a 1960s western called legends of the west thiink it was about the policing of the railroads in the west .Would appreciate any info actors names ect.

  • Nice list but certainly more of a "traditionalist's" take on the Western. Nothing from Leone, none of the revisionist Westerns of the 1970s, including the work of greats such as Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch, Pat Garret & Billy the Kid, Major Dundee) and Clint Eastwood (Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, Unforgiven) and nothing later than 1972. Some great films listed but way too many unmentioned. Mind you, the list only allows 10. All the best!

  • How can you leave out High Noon !!!!!!!!

  • Great list, good song too. Any list with The Searchers at #1 is ok by me.

I also have to agree that I like Eastwood, but spaghetti westerns aren't my favorites. I'd include For a Few Dollars More in my top 10 probably, maybe my top 5. But I'd take traditional westerns first anyday.

  • @AgentSmithClan thank you for you comments!

  • where he remained clint eastwood?

  • Whats the music??

  • @rocknblues90- Back in the Saddle Again-Gene Autry

  • @halbie71 Thanks! ;D

  • As always a matter of taste...however glad to see the Searchers as number 1...maybe Stagecoach should have been on the list...Unforgiven.....Open Range...My Darlin Clementine...High Noon.....however your list is certainly valid and gives lots of room for discussion....

  • I´d add "The Big Country" and a few of Sergio leones Westerns

  • Almost all of John Ford's Westerns were filned im Monument Valley, Arizona on Navajo Land. You'll recognize someof the Navajo in Fort Apache, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. You'll see them again in Cheyenne Autum.

  • Clint Eastwood is America's greatest western movie star. It's an axiom, not an opinion. John Wayne killed to many of my people on the silver screen.

  • @Leiashack in some of John Wayne's westerns he befriended Natives Americans, for example Fort Apache (1948)

  • So.... then you don't like Clint Eastwood?

  • @Degoxen I like Clint Eastwood but I prefer other western movies over Clint's. I never did really care for his "Spaghetti Westerns"

  • @halbie71 Ya, but those movies sure jump started his career.

  • @ernstbecker1- I agree!

  • @halbie71 what about unforgiven.....the american film institute put it fourth on their Afi 10 top 10 list in the westerm genre

  • @666007Mike they have their list, I have mine.

  • John Wayne at the door -- a salute to his mentor Harry Carey, Sr., as he grabs his right arm.

  • @ernstbecker1 not too many people know that!

  • Ty I'm a big fan of western movies Ima watch all these

  • Love all the movies on this list can't argue with John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart and Paul Newman and Robert Redford even though there's no Clint Eastwood that's cool everyone has an opinion. I love those movies but I also love The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Once Upon A Time In The West, My Darling Clementine, The Wild Bunch, How The West Was Won (All Star Cast on that one loved it), also loved The Lonesome Dove, and I even liked the Unforgiven (1992) all pure classics :)

  • Love all the movies on this list can't argue with John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart and Paul Newman and Robert Redford even though there's no Clint Eastwood that's cool everyone has an opinion. I love those movies but I also love The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Once Upon A Time In The West, My Darling Clementine, How The West Was Won (All Star Cast on that one loved it), also loved The Lonesome Dove, and I even liked the Unforgiven (1992) staring Eastwood, Freeman, and Hackman classics.

  • lonesome dove #1

  • Well, five of your picks I agree with. And five out of ten ain't bad.

  • @packjim56 Thank you! Just out of curiosity can you name your other five movies?

  • @halbie71 The Searchers, Red River, Shane, Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid and Jerimiah Johnson.

  • @halbie71 as to the other five that I would put on my list. They would be "Cowboy" with Glenn Ford, "The Cowboys" with John Wayne again, "True Grit" Wayne again, "Rio Bravo", Wayne again, "The Wild Bunch", Directed by Sam Peckinpah. .

  • @packjim56 good picks, thank you for your input!

  • No Clint Eastwood movies in this list?

  • @halbie71 So do you not like Clint Eastwood then?

  • The Searcher is the first , with no but or if . but the Wild Bunch for sure is 2nd .

  • They , where good , The searcher is first , but i thought ,Wild bunch was 2nd .

Hang em high would be 3rd .........and so on .

  • Red River #1

    Rio Bravo #2

    that's my opinion

  • You are talking about TOP TEN MOVIES,,,but,,,,,,,If You talking about *WESTERN* don't forget to mention * Fistful Of Dollars * * For A Few Dollars More * *The Good the Bad and the Ugly *

This movies will always go from Generations to Generation.!!!

  • @victorNY37 I'm talking about My Top Ten Western Movies!

  • hard to beat clint n john wayne

  • no High Noon? no Once Upon A Time? no Dances With Wolves? no The Bad, The Good And The Ugly? ..

  • @hansmann87 Yes, No, No, No & No!

  • @halbie71

    worst list i've ever seen

  • @mydezi83- A person can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but can't please all of the people all of the time.

  • Can't argue...Nice list...Ride away...

  • @deetjay1 Thank You!

  • great list, hard to argue with it. as i grow older i find myself drawn to these movies because hollywood lost its entertainment value. even the new westerns don"t have the appeal of these movies did. my only suggestion would be to expand it to top 20 and add true grit "69, gbu, the cowboys, btw i have hated bruce dern ever since "72 lol, oh, one more, the cheyenne social club and support your local sherriff although it is probably better know for its comedy. thanks for the excellent video.

  • @moparmenace59 Thank you for your comments!

  • @ halbie71 - Thanks for the props. Also,i enjoyed "The Cowboys" ("72) w/ Duke, and "Macabe & Mrs. Miller" w/ Warren Beatty.

  • Try to find "A Man Called Horse" w/ Richard Harris. Spectacular!

  • @73parman I saw that movie when it first out. in 1970 (Which I hadn't seen since then) The scence where they hung Richard Harris with bones? thru his chest was hard for me to watch. I remember there was a sequel called "The Return of a Man Called Horse" which I saw long ago also. Thanks for the suggestion, now I plan on "A Man Called Horse" to be my next Netflix rental.

  • A fistful of dollars? For a few dollars more? How can that movies not in the list?

  • @jmyer98 sorry I don't really care for spaghetti westerns.

  • Once upon a time in the west has to be a honorable mention.

  • Obviously this man never actually saw... THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY!!!

  • @shoestuntin obviously I have & it is not one of my favorites!

  • @halbie71 would it be in top 20?

  • @bastardgear8 Probably not- Jesse James (1939) The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) High Noon (1953) Gunfight at The O.K. Corral (1957) Rio Bravo (1959) How the West Was Won (1962) Nevada Smith (1966) True Grit (1969) The Wild Bunch (1969) The Shootist (1976) would round out my top 20.

  • @halbie71 I would've put Pale Rider, Unforgiven, and Tombstone in there :)

  • @GP1583 thank you for your comments! It is refreshing that someone disagrees with someone's opinion without resorting to insults.

    Jeff

  • @halbie71 No problem mate, like yourself and I suspect many of us on here, are film enthusiasts. Capable of a civilised discussion on like and dislikes. As for Wyatt Earp I have seen it but it was a while ago so I'll have to watch it again. I just finished watching Unforgiven :)

  • @GP1583 What did you think of Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp? I liked the movie Tombstone but I liked Wyatt Earp more so.

  • @shoestuntin Jeremiha J. was pretty good, but i wonder also, dod he see t g t b and t u.

  • Hey everybody I just saw the new version of "True Grit" I really didn't care for it all that much. I suggest you save your money & wait for it to come out on DVD.

  • It is very hard to pick just 10. I don't think I could do it. There are so many good ones that are not that much better than other good ones. I suppose that I might have to limit the selection to pick ones that were ground breakers. In that respect you left out "High Noon" a very good but also a precident setting film that changed the landscape of Westerns forever.

  • i personaly love the movie rio bravo with john wayne dean martin ricky nealson and walter brennan.

  • A great list, but what about The Culpepper Cattle Co ?

  • with you all the way! except, CULPPER CATTLE Co to replace REDFORD.

  • No GBU, Unforgiven, True Grit, or certain others make for an interesting list

  • I must admit, I was shocked Unforgiven did not make the list and even shocker when I found out The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly did not make it either.

  • No Clint eastwood, what sort of list is this without Sergio leone....

  • Wheres The Good The Bad The Ugly?!

  • I can pretty much agree with this list except for one HUGE miss: where's 'High Noon'? I mean, that is THE western if there ever was one. I'm also shocked not to see 'Stagecoach' on here, or any of Randolph Scott's movies. I can't disgree more on the inclusion of 'Destry', there's plenty of great Jimmy Stewart oaters out there (Naked Spur and Bandolero come to mind), but I never had much stomach for Destry. 'Jeremiah Johnson', while a good film, I don't think makes any top ten list.

  • you don't like Italo Western don't you?

  • @Serco555-Nope!

  • its a good list i wouldnt exactly agree with it but hey its your list im more of a fan of eastwood westerns

  • Well, Magnifisent seven is movie that i don't is good, story was so simble. In kurosawas Seven samurai story was simble, but is was diffrent theme.

  • good list. There are a lot of good westerns. It's hard to pick a top 10 that everyone will be happy with. Satisfy yourself first.

  • Thank You For Your Comments gtrock66!

  • great list. i saw this box set of 100 western movies in my local mall. if i don't get it for christmas i'll see if i have enough money to get it.

  • Thank you for your comments Danny, it is always good to hear from our neighbors from the North!

  • @halbie71 no problem. i love westerns. infact i was watching shane just the other night.

  • Very nice list! I esp. liked seeing Jeremiah Johnson make the cut. I'm not normally a huge fan of Robert Redford, but JJ is one of those movies I can just watch over and over.

Good call on The Searchers, too. One of Wayne's best performances, IMHO.

  • Thank you for your commentsTypicalJAFO!

  • Mmmm.... good list, but I would have included "The Wild Bunch", "Hombre",, "Unforgiven" and "Monte Walsh" on my list

  • halbie71, That's a great collection of Western pictures in your top ten. Winchester 73 has always been one of my all time favourites.

Dan Duryea as Waco Johnnie Dean coupled with Stephen McNally as Dutch Henry Brown have to be the best bad guys of the late 1940s early 1950s in Westerns. The rest of the outstanding cast is absolutely top notch.

  • @Geostrategic1-Thank you for your comments!

  • Shane is one of my favorite films of all time but I am a big fan of the Cohens and will be interested in seeing their True Grit remake.

  • @oldgoldtop at first when I heard about a remake of True Grit I thought what a bunch of S**T!!! Now that I know it is a Cohen Brothers movie, maybe it might be a good movie???

  • where's The Good The Bad & the ugly !!!

  • what about the good the bad and the ugly? that movie was awesome

  • So which one are you going to bump for True Grit remastered?

  • @JiveDadson True Grit Is a very good movie!!!
