There shouldn't be a Multiplayer in future Elder Scrolls games from the start, simply because it is a real good SP game and thats it. If you would try to do multiplayer in an ES game, this would mean less controll on the world and the story and more generic quests etc. You would have to change the game dynamics by a lot. As much as WoW wouldn't work as a SP game, Skyrim just wouldn't work as an MP game, simply because it has structures of a SP game that are not portable to MP.

Multiplayer and Co-op are two very different things. Multiplayer relates to one open server where everyone joins at once (sounds like havoc, no?), while co-op is more towards a private server, or an invite-only server. Of course in co-op you could have lots of people playing at once... it would just be less chaotic than having lots of naked men running around the world :D

It's a nice idea having multiplayer in Skyrim but there's just too many pitfalls and game balance issues besides the obvious there is only one Dragonborn in this game. There is no 'just add multiplayer' in rich story driven games like these. The core single player experience is tied into the simple idea that the main character interacts with plot NPCs in specific locations to trigger unique world events that happen one time only.

Multiplayer would ruin Skyrim... Just consider how much of the game is centered around your character. Every choice you make effects the world around you. And you are free to do whatever you want. Now try this with multiple players. How would you force other players to make the same choices as you? Or how would you react when some guy kills your favorite NPC?

It's not that simple. One of the reasons Skyrim is as good as it is is BECAUSE it's single player. I am, by no means, saying that single-player games are better, that's another matter, but just think about the several main reasons the elder scrolls games are so good:

For one, they have been known to have INCREDIBLE graphics, clearly shown in Skyrim. If it were MMO (MASSIVE multiplayer online, a few players, like in this mod, wouldnt make a difference), it would't be able to

I personally think a multiplayer skyrim would be good, but there are setbacks. Firstoff, Skyrim is designed as a singleplayer game, so all of the challenges in the game are designed to be completed by a single person. By going on group raids in dungeons, it removes much of the challenge from the game due to the fact that there are multiple people attempting a task that was designed to be completed by a single player.
