Bono paid a fitting tribute to Ronnie with these fine words - "Ronnie has left his earthly tour for one of the heavens. They need him up there, God is lonely for a voice louder than his own".
Thank you for posting pictures that show many stages of Ronnie's life, including the last years. He always made such a strong impression in photographs, on records and in person. This tune is a wonderful epitaph for him; you are to be congratulated, pddybrry.
Eleanor sings "Restless Farewell" and Ronnie sings "The Parting Glass". Listen and you can clearly hear the two different melodies. It's a beautiful arrangement. Thanks for posting.
This is actually a medley of two songs: "The Parting Glass" a traditional Irish song, and "Restless Farewell", a VERY close imitation of "The Parting Glass", written by Dylan. I recognize that much art is a rearrangement of old elements into something new, but in this case I think Dylan imitates to the point of plagiarism. It may well be that his subconscious came up with a new version of something he may have heard, but forgotten on a conscious level. I write some of my best stuff that way. lol
@RichinNOLA It seems Dylan did a lot of "borrowing", especially in the early days...but then so did Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Dave Guard and many others: something about all human progress being based on plagiarism. I guess the trick is to know who to borrow from.
One of my earliest childhood memories is sitting on my grandad's lap one Easter afternoon. We had all the family over for breakfast and during the quiet that comes after everyone leaves he put on a record. We listened to Ronnie sing "I'll tell me ma" and we sang and we laughed.
I'm now convinced, after listening to this and Dervish's version of Spanish Boots, that Bob Dylan's songs sound even better when performed by Irish artists.
Fantastic
