  • There is only one person who can play trumpet better than Marsalis, Chuck Norris

  • Four people are jealous...I cry tears of envy listening to this song.

  • marsalis is an amazing trumpeter amzing and clear sound, but in my opinion i think that he should be more agressive in this specific song... he is too gentle in some parts... but no doubt he is an amazing trumpeter... hope one day ill play like him :)

  • This is fantastic!! amazing talent!

I agree, it would be nice to where the orchestra is from.

  • Marsalis doesn't hire white people; he's a big racist.

Also, the orchestra isn't listed; the orchestral part is also very important in a concerto.

  • @SatchmoSings So? He's still a great trumpet player. This video isn't meant to show off the orchestra's skill, it's meant to show off Wynton's skill.

  • @goodkingkyle1 Gee, using your logic Marsalis should just play the trumpet part acapella since there would be no point in crediting the orchestra and the conductor.

    And he's still a racist.

  • Absolutely right! It's all about the MUSICALITY of a performance.

When you think about it, many good amateurs can play the notes of a concerto on their chosen instrument but what sets the professional apart are 2 things:

Excellent intonation in all registers and CRAFTMANSHIP i.e. "telling a story" through their music rather than just presenting a series of notes.

  • mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm lovely! Thank you

  • I thought I could play this decently, I reeeeeeeeeeeeally need more practice xD

  • i love that minor section for a just a few short seconds

  • WOW! great playing... and great sound quality!

  • Probably played the F using F# and tuning slides.

  • wow!!!!!

  • superb

  • beautiful

  • @Lassannn FOCK OFF U FUKING FAGGOT

  • @jrod246991 Chuck Norris can also play you so much better. :)

  • @Lassannn dude go kill urself

  • I LOVE THIS TRUMPETER TONE ESpecailly because he is from New Olreans

  • To be honest, I think the orchestral accompaniment is better than the trumpet solo! I love the soaring 16th-note melodies.

  • He's definitely on an Eb; the sound is WAY to characteristic of an Eb. The great thing about Wynton is that he can play a piccolo trumpet and make it sound like a C or F trumpet, while still getting the insane range of the piccolo. He's a really good player, one of the best, and his sound certainly says so.

  • @trtjoel I think it must be a Bb. Check out 7:33. It's a low concert Eb; that is already difficult on a Bb. There is no way that an Eb can get down that low without going into the pedal range, and that tone is too good.

  • @49BuescherMan Actually... You can do this song easier on Eb. No need for pedal tones whatsoever.

  • @49BuescherMan Yes it is a pedal, you can hear the difference in tone but you're right, still very good. What do you expect, it's Wynton!

  • jesus, nice low concert Eb at 7:37...

  • Very nice! Sounds like he is on a Bb, Eb trumpets are a different beast to play and usually sound brighter

  • I have a friend playing this for solo contest. I'm a fan of it. Especially Wynton. He's pretty much awesome.

  • it's funny because I'm holding the entire concerto in my hands right now. and is really tough but i freaking love it. i will take as long as i need to too play the whole thing and play it good. and the whole thing is thirty pages long.

  • Great musicianship. 9:06 is genius!

  • simply the best

  • every time i listen to wynton, i end up just sitting there with my jaw on the floor.

  • @iwssonb lol, calm down there buddy. he's great but thats just funny :)

  • MONETTE's THE BEST!!!!

  • @daboyboy1000 and as expensive as hell. i wish i could afford one

  • he does a great job expressing himself in this piece although the ending is a little too dull for me. i would like it better if he made it more dramatic. thats the way i like it when im playing this piece

  • VivaLaTrumpet, let me suggest something that you'll enjoy immensely. On YouTube find Tine Thing Helseth and Alison Balsom and listen to their rentitions of Hummels Trumpet Concerto in Eb Major, Rondo. You'll like it, trust me. Ms. Helseth is a Norwegian I believe and Ms. Balsom is British.

  • @SpeedyNeutrino43 The two girls play better version ,Sorry mr. Marsalis ,he is one of my favorite Trumpet but I don;t like the sound in this concert. my references for trumpet classic sound is Maurice Andree . don't take wrong Marsalis play beatiful

  • What trumpet is using to get that low F? Or his he just flatting his Bflat to get it out?

  • The piece is written in Eb, so he is probably using an Eb Trumpet.

  • @OneWithTheBugs .. umm that just means it's in the key of Eb, if he was using an Eb it would've been rewritten in Bb. see the switch?? just sayin,

  • He is racially controversial

  • How is he controversial? He's a fantastic trumpeter. What is controversial?

  • he has a very narrow opinion of what "jazz" is. very traditionalist sort of to an extreme. read the whole thing in the comments.

  • @drifteromega Can you tell me cause i dont know. All I know is he's the best trumpet player ive ever seen. He makes me want to play better and practice.

  • There is no question that he is an amazing musician. Look at him all over youtube. So many different situations that he is able to excel in. People get upset with him because he says that avant-garde style jazz and fusion jazz aren't valid forms of jazz music. They are something else, but it isn't jazz.. Plus he can be a little arrogant at times.

  • I'm speaking for other people though. I for one, don't have a problem with him. I don't agree with him but he can speak his mind on what is jazz and what isn't.

  • @drifteromega

Well said. I agree with him that they aren't valid forms of jazz, except for that Miles Davis guy....haha.

No but whether fusion or avante-garde isn't considered jazz, its still good music. I think Wynton needs to understand that just because it's not jazz doesn't mean it's not pleasurable to the ears.

  • I think he was more into the technical aspect of it. He was classical trained after all. I would tend to agree that many jazz "artists" are not artists at all. I understand that everyone has their own tastes, and I certainly respect that, but some jazz surmounts to merely a bastardized musical tune. Some of it is barely listenable. This goes for all forms of music, not just jazz, but perhaps it was his intention to "clean things up" a bit?

  • Maybe the composers of the song the people have to play can be for blamed.

  • @mtb416

i'm not too sure about that. maybe SOME jazz artists "bastardize" music but the grand majority in my opinion are wonderful artists. can you give me some examples of such artists that ruin a tune?

  • My fav parts are the very beginning, and 8:25-end. =]

  • I'm playing this concerto for a competition between people in my college, wish me luck. I'm adding in the third movement too

  • This piece considers musicianship and discipline. The first movement isn't technical but putting some musicality into it is the hard part.

  • very true. I have to audition for CBDA using various parts of the concerto this year, including this one.

  • hey! me too! all state right?

  • @snoopydgo78 The last page, with all the large intervals and octave jumps is pretty difficult to sound good on, I would have to say.

  • this song is really great. i wanna learn how to play it. im good but still need to get better then were im at now

  • I really like this piece, its not the technical stuff thats getting me its my range :(

After several injuries and setbacks im stil working on getting up there.

So im playing the Eflat part on my trumpet w/o transposing. Its SO FUN to play though

  • yeah playing it on a regular trumpet instead of a soprano can be a small endurance challenge... the trills are really awkward on a C trumpet is the thing that gets me

  • I'm playing this song. I'm learning it. I imitate his style and tone. This vid really helps me.

  • I played this as a solo for a competition, no where near as good as wynton though!

  • i would love to play violin for this concerto

  • The Best.

  • Im working on this piece myself. This piece is very hard; the rhythm and notes combined makes it crazy. The jumps and tounging starting at 8:29... I still havent even gotten that part down yet.

  • me 2 i absolutely love this piece...and i agree, very tricky at the end

  • its all in the air, and control. play it slowly, get the partials down, and then gradually speed it up. use lots of air. i think one of the hardest things to do is the the G-A trill! good luck

  • Wynton is great ;)

  • This is the first mvt. right, I've heard the third but never the first or second. I have fallen in love with this one, I think I will learn this and play it for a concerto contest and other auditions. The third is a little difficult for me though.

  • Man, no one ever has the patience to perform the second. it sounds beautiful when done correctly, but if you screw up one little area or it, it throws off the whole feel.

  • the second movement is quite a gem. the third is very difficult

  • this is a good piece for intermediate level trumpet players. it isnt very technically difficult as the third mov is but it is still very musically challenging and FUN

  • Listened to just about every classical trumpet clip available on YT and all of them are just fantastic. This one on the other hand is crap. Flat from beginning till end - and musicality is one thing I usually love with WM - pathetic orchestra & director. Any way you could actually this clip that does the great WM a disservice?

  • He jumped the octave on the G at 3:41, how odd.

Playing this movement is very fun. Even on my (not so cooperative) trumpet, I can play it with some dignity.

  • well if hes playing it on eb trumpet then that low g would be a pedal so i guess thats why he did it

  • i think he doesn't do the low G because he is playing on an Eb trumpet which makes the G on the Bb part a D on the Eb. The horn he plays has a pedal C attachment so he can play the pedal C at 7:37. Im pretty sure this is why but i could be wrong.

  • I liked my Strad a lot too - I'm pretty sure I got one of the last good ones they made, before Bach went on strike and all that - but over the years my focus shifted over to jazz, specifically playing lead trumpet, and the Bach setup wasn't doing it for me, so I got the Yamaha Bobby Shew 6310z. There are days when I miss my Bach though, specifically when I'm trying fruitlessly to get the Yamaha to play classical well.

  • I love my strad, the valve action is great and the valves hardly stick, I got the smaller bell size because the larger took a bunch of air to fill. The sound is great too in my opinion. My recommendation is to spend some time at the instrument store, try out a bunch and take the one you like the most.

  • Don't jazz versions have smaller bells?

  • It's not really about jazz versions, it's more about fullness of sound. A larger bell makes the sound more full but when i tried out a 45 instead of a 37 it took too much air to fill up the horn. I can still play classical music with the smaller bell though.

  • best kind is a bach stratavarious model 37 local music dealers.

  • im considering getting a strad trumpet. but not sure whether to go for a yamaha :-/

    any suggestions?

or anyone know a good place to buy them from in the uk?

i love this piece playing it for my A2 music

check out the Neruda trumpet concerto 2 thats ace :-)

  • strad! for sure. though actually it's just my opinion. try them both yourself first, then see which gives you the best tone personally or feels the best :)

  • More actual professionals use Yamahas.

And most people who use Strads use vintage Elkhart or Mt. Vernon ones.

The only case where a professional really uses a new Strad is if the symphony section plays on one, and usually those aren't the Strads, usually the Chicago Philadelphia models etc

Look at Schilke also for classical, but Yamaha is your best bet. Yamahas are very consistent too.

  • yamahas are the best.i have 6310zs.that is super model-you can play all very good

  • I currently play a 6310z, and for all I complain about it the horn still does what I need it to do and it's by no means crappy. I did try the newer version, the 8310z, at a festival and found it to be much easier to play - I was able to control it with wonderful ease, it slotted very well, and I was better able to go between a good lead/jazz and a good classical tone. And Yamahas in general aren't terribly expensive (most in the neighborhood of $1800-2000), which is very helpful.

  • Yamaha have a very aggressive marketing policy, so some orchestras just buy them and the poor guys have to play them.

  • You've probably never played one, they play very well. Some models are as good as Schilkes.

  • Well, I have played quite a number of them - our orchestra did buy them - and well... they are technically well built trumpets, but they lack character in the tone.

At least that's what I feel, and what my colleagues feel as well.

  • Well, I acknowledge that Schilkes are well made, but I don't LIke them either...

  • The best advice I can offer is to take into consideration what style of music you want to focus on. If you want to be a jazz trumpet player, I would recommend looking into a yamaha Bobby Shew 8310z or the Bergeron LA model. However, if you think you are going to primarily classical musician, then a Bach is the way to go - Either a Stradivarius 43 (or 37) or the Bach New York model, which I have never played but am told by those that use it that it is very good.

  • Get a Xeno.

The city stards are also pretty good and the new york #7 is popular except most dont get it because of the gold trim.

  • Stradivarius? thought that was just strings! guess you learn something new every day..

  • Stradivarius is best known as the name of the legendary violins that so far nobody has had much success replicating...Bach's most popular trumpet model was referred to once as the "Stradivarius of trumpets" and the name stuck - at least that's what I've heard.

  • Stradivarius also is a product line within the Vincent Bach range of trumpets.

  • Interesting, thank you!

  • that happened in 1926 i think

  • Stradivarius is a product line of Bach trumpets

  • 2 weeks ago, I printed out the sheet music for this & the Haydn conc, as well as the Vivaldi for 2 trpts. All are great fun to play, esp after listening to them on countless recordings over the years.

Since taking early retirement & moving to Mexico, I've had the chance to practice for a couple of hours every day & ALL of the lip I used to have decades ago has finally returned (after 2 yrs here in Colima, Mx). The neighbors tell me they are very pleased w/their "free" concerts every day.

  • haha i like your youtube name! that's cool to hear that you've gotten it back. this summer i'm going to learn piano (but continue playing trumpet) because as i'm sure u know- if you dont practice DAILY your lips go to hell. on a scale from 1-10 how out of shape were u lips over the years of not playing?

  • They were a complete shambles - not only was there nothing above E @top of staff, there was nothin' happenin' below the staff either! I was so embarrassed to play that I stuffed a little toe cushion into my harmon mute when playing - the wife couldn't even hear the horn from the next room.

Of course, now I serenade 1/2 the town from our bedroom(w/the only A/C in the house - ahhh, I love to be cool, in more than one way).

No, I never miss a day of play - it sounds & feels too sweet to stop!

  • hola, una pregunta...

veo que viviste en mexico, supongo yo que sabes algo de español, me podrias decir donde conseguiste las partituras para haydn trumpet por favor?

si no entiendes este mensaje respondelo y te lo pongo en ingles, gracias

  • i played this for an audition one time...very nice and clean solo for trumpet players.

  • Oh my god. It's two flats guys. Chill!

  • Sound's very much like Haydn

  • When was this recorded?

  • 5 flats is Db

  • Bb minor.

Not sure where 4 flats for Eb came from though. o.0

  • Comment removed

  • Man up. Stop being such a pussy. Or maybe you should just play it on Eb Trumpet.

  • You do realize that OMEA only requires the first movement as well as college auditions? I played the first movement for OMEA and my college audition at BGSU.

  • I realized that once i looked at the list.

  • are you retarded? good luck getting into music school under the impression that there are 4 flats in Eb..........

  • I phrased it wrong. I meant the key signature contained 5 flats if transposed for a Bb trumpet and 4 flats for Eb trumpet.

  • If it's in the key of Eb concert then it's in the key of F (1 flat) on a Bb horn and the the key of C (no sharps or flats) on an Eb horn

  • Love it !!!!

  • 吹得很好!!

  • 7:37

    tromboneXD

  • it's actually an F below the staff played on the trumpet, but i do agree, it does sound kinda absurd

  • I know, I know, I'm practising this movement.

    It's a F but with Eb trumpet this is a C!

  • It was transposed to Eb because E trumpets are rare in modern times.

  • and i have to learn it for my music school final exam, lot of work...

  • wonderful! one question: at 58'' orchestra plays some notes, but in all other recordings (André Karajan, Nakariakov)that passage is different. Why?

  • Yeah, i noticed to...It cant be inntentional, i mean, it sounds wrong... But then on the other side, they couldnt have got it so wrong by coinsidence....

    I dunno...

  • I think it's intentional. This passage is played in both ways.....but it's very strange

  • I have to play this concerto for an audition peice...im a trumpet player...very excited...hopingto make it to districts...regionals..and maybe states...wish me luck guys :]

  • Wish you....:-)

  • thanks so much. i made 1st chair at counties. district auditions are coming up soon :]

  • good luck

  • Thanks so much i made 1st chair at counties. Districts are coming up soon. :]

  • i checked it with a tuning fork and it's slightly sharp of E flat, but definitely in E flat. while E is a better key for strings, it would be a horrible key for an Eb or Bb trumpet.

  • i bought albums WHERE DID HE FUCK IT ALL UP ????

  • wrong key

  • wrong key? Are u sure?

  • aye. it should be in E

i konw there is a big hoo ha about this but it sounds better in E and the string parts make more sence in E. and why else would an E trumpet be called a Hummel Trumpet?

  • except no idiot would buy an E trumpet just to play one concerto. -_-

  • i would

  • Just so u ppl kno this peice was originally written in e but later transposed for wat reason i don't kno but this version is in e flat.

  • thank you for making me look like a smartarse.

good man here i'll vote you up.

  • it was transposed because in the new key it's easier to play and seems to sound better for younger players who mostly play it nowadays for auditions and solo and ensemble type deals...which is what I'm doing! (:

  • i heard it was transposed for e flat because there were only a couple of e trumpets. Very rare

  • well this was originally made for the natural trumpet...no valves or slides..kinda like a brass claniet with the finger holes...

  • brass clarinet? i know a valveless trumpet, but come on. lol

  • this was actually written for one of the first key bugles

  • Not only was it made for keyed trumpet-- not natural-- but neither a keyed trumpet nor a natural trumpet is like a "brass clarinet". Look up both, and you will see that they resemble a very large bugle (but they're NOT bugles) and the keys on the keyed trumpet are in a configuration nothing like a woodwind. The "modern" version of a natural trumpet has no keys or valves, but it does have some finger holes to help with intonation.

  • Hey dude, thanks for the biography. I'll use it on my next school project :)

    nah, just kidding!

Good audio...not much of a video though.

  • i'm the first to comment on this page!
