Not only is Keanu a good actor, he's a good person. When he finished the last movie, he had earned some 200 million or so dollars from the first two, he took the money he made from revolutions and split it with his crew on the set. As it's explained in "The Matrix Reloaded", Neo is the One, an anomaly made of the balance and imbalance of the Matrix. As he is the "extra" part, he can do things others can't. As for the pole, may be he just hit the Smiths hard enough to keep shortening the pole. He didn't fly away in the first place, because he thought he could permanently beat Smith, but he couldn't.
