  • lmao @ "the whack calzone", props dude

  • Calgary reminds me of Philadelphia by Neil Young.

  • justin vernon is part of bon iver, not bon iver its self, I have seen justin play by himself, and with different bands... and seeing as how he does his recording in a small recording studio just outside his home town eau claire. but say what youd like about the music... bc bon iver is up for some grammys

  • What headphones are those?

  • BOOOO!

  • free cal

  • also i think i agree with your thoughts on the new textures in this album. it is a new sound for bon iver, and the percussion certainly makes the song easier to bob your head to, but as of now the other instruments act kind of like fireflies floating around the melody, lighting at the right times but really lacking any sort of rhythm themselves in a way that contribute to the song's direction as a whole. i think sculpting this nick will push their music into something more coherent as a band

  • awesome review my friend! i agree that there is something sort of tangible in the honesty found in his voice. i'm not sure how he does it, but there is emotion--regardless of what exactly it describes--felt in his voice. i have yet to look really listen to his lyrics, only take in the feelings they give.

  • Bon Iver is actually a band, it started as a solo project by Justin but now it is a band :)

  • "Boone evearrrrrr"

  • @migglep It is pronounced like that, Bon Iver (Pronounce Bhon Hivär) means "good winter" in French, the original word is "Bon Hiver".

  • Hinnom, TX !!......and dude don't break a song down like a movie or video game..picking it apart so much....you either like it or not with music. rating a song? lame.

  • I hate that you exist, Anthony.

  • You know what's weird? I never thought of Bon Iver's music as particularly sad. Aside from "The Wolves (Act I and II)" and "Blindsided," I was never able to pin that mood on it.

Especially this track. I think it's a beautiful, content love song.

I wrote an interpretation of it on songmeanings . com if anyone's interested. It's under the name "aquarius121."

  • I'd like to hear Justin get together with Unkle, I think that would be interesting.

  • thank you god for people like you. well-made review sir! i'm a huge bon iver fan (don't believe me? check my cover of Skinny Love...I don't do all out recordings for covers for very many bands...or artists for that matter). i felt the same way about this! i totally think the full album is gonna make this sound more complete. thanks for the review :)

  • you probabaly should attemp to be nicer to cal.

  • if anyone has ever taken time out of their busy schedule of mundanity to read an interview with Justin Vernon, they'd realize that he himself pronounces it Bone Eevair.

    Now... Back to what's relevant:

    his beautiful music.

  • "Bone eevair"

  • @kintar90 ?

  • @DancingMonkey12

I was trying to show people how to pronounce the name of the artist.

  • What I have heard already of this album (here and on NPR) really makes me excited! It does have an initial allure, but I really have the sense that I will grow to LOVE this album in a big way as did FEFA; Justin's music seems to grow on me in this wonderful way over time.

I think the arrangement is actually brilliant because it does on one hand sound quite professional and well produced and still keeps that indie feel to it.

I predict Bon Iver will be an album of the year candidate this year.

  • The final "orgasm" of the song made me have an Orgasm, it may not have moved/pushed someone who isn't as compelled to listen to Justin Vernon, however for the people who are that final blast in the songs was like a build up of emotions it powers through and gives you a feeling like a rush of adrenaline, it's brilliant. I can't be more exited about this album.

  • bone iver

    BONE iver

    -crys-

  • Listened to the entire album. It's great (as expected). Different from For Emma, Forever Ago. But still great.

  • You always need a fucking expert... i wish you would just shut the fuck up, listen to an album, then go for a walk rather than feeling the need to post yourself talking absolute jibberish.

  • @augib Hahahaha you are the best

  • eyebrows up, eyebrows down.

  • pronunciation has nothing to do with the songs quality, good review tho :)

  • 13 people were sent to the Whack Cal Zone.

  • bon hiver - good winter in french.

its a pun because the album was recorded in a hut in Wisconsin over Winter.

    definitely not pronounced bone iver,

  • @tomlo9 I agree apart from it's not a pun, Justin just didn't like the spelling.

  • Bone Iver? If that how you pronounce it?

  • review GIVERS " in light"

  • I thought Bon iver was a band? Means good winter doesent it?

  • I'm someone who is into all of this Acoustic Indie Folk stuff but I've never been big on Bon Iver. Hes kinda like the Coldplay of Indie Folk. All style and no substance. I just generally think this guys overrated.

  • @superfly299 You've obviously never heard "For Emma". It sounds like nothing Coldplay. Your comparison fails and you're fucking musically inept.

  • @tallestfoxes I have heard it. I'm not making a direct comparison to Coldplay either. I'm saying that on first listen I really liked some coldplay songs but on multiple listens I just got bored. The same thing happened with Bon Iver. His Style was attractive at first, but IMO he didn't really have a lot of substance to back it up.

  • @superfly299

    No substance??? Overrated???

Justin Vernon has put together some of the most moving music in the history of sound and yet most people (if they have even heard of him) think his name is Bone Iver.

I guess you are entitled to your opinion, but for godsake back it up with something thoughtful.

  • @kintar90 To be fair, your reply was just as opinionated. I'd be happy to get into specifics if you really want. Just read my reply to tallestfoxes.

  • @superfly299 you mis-spelled UNDER(rated).

  • @TheRyduff How is this guy underrated? Maybe compared to the stuff they play on the radio, but this guy gets a lot of attention from the Indie community. I mean I can see where you might not think he is overrated but its hard to say he's underrated.

  • I allways wonder what you would look like with more hair.

  • FLEX YOUR HEAD BRO.

  • I'm from Calgary too. Never heard of this artist but I like the song. Made my heart ache.

  • REVIEW UNGIRTHED/LOFTICRIES BY PURITY RING

  • Bone E. Vare???

  • @getout116 lol i saw an interview and thats how justin says it

  • @getout116 He definitely mispronounces stuff sometimes, but this isn't one of those times.

  • no,one cares

  • whack calzone... L'HOMME RUN?! PIZZA PARTY?!

  • the first listen i had with this song it didn't really catch me. tonight i played it 3 times in a row. really digging it.... almost cried

  • Great review!

  • BEAUTIFUL.

  • i think that the tracks on for emma where more touching than calgary is. it's still a wonderful song but when i listen to beach baby, the wolves or flume i get goosebumps and a feeling that i can't describe. didn't happen with calgary.

  • Bone iver? great review though

  • Hey buddy, can i just say that that was an excellent review!

I don't agree with everything you say but you have such a good understanding of music that everything you say is reasonable and a good point.

You're way better than heaps of the reviewers out there.

    Good job!

  • you're the death of independent music

  • @16metres how exactly?

  • I liked when your head got all big like a balloon.

  • i have the new album already :D

its good, but its not as good as for emma for ever ago :(

  • im so so for the new album, but you and your great taste need no reminding that it should definently be on the cards come release

  • I think the fact that it doesn't blossom into a full on Coldplay style anthemic build is precisely why it's so successful...it doesn't sound formulaic because of this, and keeps the focus on his amazing vocals...

  • @errorspending i also think that it's good that the track didn't do that, but i don't think that's what the reviewer is saying. his point is that it doesn't blossom; is badly produced. bon iver can make a bigger sound without sounding cliche, i'm sure of it; but he kind of falls flat here, in my opinion.

  • @GraceBlanchflower ...I'm not sure what he could specifically do to make the song sound any better. I think the production is actually quite perfect. the various reverbs used for the different drum elements are really interesting and create a wide range of depths within a very lofi aesthetic. It feels very intimate and huge at the same time to me....which is a very difficult thing to achieve. What do you think he could do differently to make it bigger sounding?

  • This video was done on my 18th birthday...DESTINY.

  • YOU ARE SNOOGH!!!!!!!!! 0:49

  • After listening to the whole album, a lot of fans will need to adapt their ears... trust me.

  • review-------> Ulver - Wars Of The Roses

  • mmmm.... whack calzones....

  • whak calzone.. like a folded pizza but really awful?

  • LOL "Urgh! You LIAR!... You are -- MURH [Head Swells] -- such a liar."

  • welp, i have an addiction to the needle drop.

  • For shame Anthony. Does Cal deserve to be in the Whak Cal zone?

  • @thatsgame2001 too bad the world is supposed to end May 21...you won't be around to hear it.

  • I should add, I love the textures in the whack Cal zone. Full of really sweet reverbs and crisp delays.

  • You are Cal, you have been Whack. Lololololol.

  • So fucking excited. Pre-ordered the album - and a t-shirt for good measure!

  • Leave Cal Chuchesta alone!

  • i wonder what the whak calzone would taste like

  • I swear to God Cal's gonna stab you in your sleep one o' these days...

  • Dear God. I actually want to give Cal Chuchesta a hug...

  • the way you say Bon Iver is absolutely priceless

  • Bone Iver... I would.

  • boney where?

  • There's a new song called "the breaks" by Planningtorock. You should review it. It's pretty trippy.

  • i love your development of cal

  • I'm from Calgary!

    Derp!

    :D

  • Not sure if you really do soundtracks, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on The Chemical Brothers' ST for Hanna. It's one of my favourite albums in a while...

  • Anthony if you made an actual sitcom with Cal, it would be better than Seinfeld

  • I live in Calgary and my birthday is on June 21st. Bon Iver literally made this album for me.

  • @thatsgame2001 Hey mines June 21st too!

  • @thatsgame2001 happy birthday

  • @nge1301 Thanks! Haha I've had a lot of birthday wishes today but I didn't expect one from a random youtube comment... what a pleasant and appreciated surprise. Anthony is responsible for bringing yet another increment of joy into my life. Not as awesome as all the music he makes me discover but awesome nonetheless!

  • Can't stop thinking of L'Homme Run's "Pizza Prty" every time you mention whak calzone.

  • CAL-ZONE!...I prefer a straight pizza!!

  • Actress- Aeon Flux Capacitor

  • The synths in the background are really random, they don't fit in the song very well, that annoyed me. Overall though I'd say it's a solid track.

  • The Sea and Cake - The Moonlight Butterfly

  • @alex93metallica PLEASE LINK ME TO THE LEAK

  • I like Cal Chuchesta.

  • Comment removed

  • I think it's a good track. A natural progression from Blood Bank, if you ax me.

  • I love the whak-cal zone. hahaha!

  • Please Review Zero Heroes by XV

or Cassette Chronicles by Nitty Scott, MC

  • Bobby Jo Valentine, "A Place to Belong" Ultra Pleasness.

  • going to sleep music

  • Possibly the worst reviewer of all time, make music dont milk it to stay cool

  • Great track. Pretentious twit.

  • your opinions are pointless

  • @willow96000

Uh, he's a music reviewer, are you mad?

  • Born this Wayplz.

  • whats the album up on ur wall!?!?!?! its been up for like 2 weeks!!!!!!!1

  • Who in their right-fucking-mind is not excited for this album?

  • I don't understand how you take issue with the lo-fi quality of Bon Iver when it's being done intentionally. Seems a bit like your trying to find a fault with it rather than it actually being there. However I take your point about the aimless guitars. I'd give it a decent 8 - I think it'll be better as part of the while album rather than a stand alone track.

  • I really hate you. You don't know shit - you only review mainstream shit and also it's not "bone iver", it''s french, shut punch yourself in your nazi face, go cry over your military look (please) and stop reviewing stuff. Every single thing about your voice, your mimic and your look is just soooo naff, man.

  • @Fiaganja How did you NOT know he was kidding with that pronunciation? Pretty much nullifies everything else you say.

  • @Fiaganja then why bother watching?

  • @Fiaganja then don't watch his reviews, prick.

  • haha anthony i love your reviews they are so unique and special. keep it up dude.

  • Your voice is supreme

  • Review Rome next :)

  • I really hope you review Born This Way

  • review the new Saigon album "The Greatest Story Never Told"! and if it's too late to talk about that one, review the new Pharoahe Monch album "W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)"

  • you are so pretentious. but whatever. what do i know.

  • Do you by chance know where I can get a replacement-cable for my AKG 240s? Sorry for off topic.

  • Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi - Rome

    Friendly Fires - Pala

  • Anthony, I know you probably won't review the leaked album, but man trust me I tried restraining myself but believe me not even Jesus could go through that temptation. And let me tell you it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard, every track melts into one another, Justin's voice is more submerged into the cadence of the songs, somehow, juxtaposed by "For Emma, Forever Ago" its different but so familiar. An early review would be great, if not, ill wait, but I'm not good at that..

  • Cal will have his revenge! lol

  • OFF!

  • I love this man's voice so much that I can't help but like the song. Besides, we could have had another "Blood Bank," (shudder).

BTW, the new Clams Casino EP is going to change the world. (leak already you bitch)

  • Don't get caught with the wack calzone.

  • I always wonder how come you never do reggae? or do have any interest in reggae? I mean I never heard you ever doing a reggae review :C

  • I really like this track better than anything on For Emma, because not only does the pitch actually fall into place from his singing (perfect pitch for the lose :\), I find the extra distortion (can we stop calling it lo-fi?) to be a great effect when Vernon strains his vocals at the same time. And overall, I think this song feels more complete than anything on FE,FA.

  • Review BLUE SCHOLARS - CINEMETROPOLIS next!! Great new hip-hop album with heavy electro/indie influences

  • Can Cal bring that sweet guitar to the whack Cal zone?

  • @Bowpowradio maybe

  • I'm enjoying Calgary quite a bit. I agree that it will most likely sound better within the context of the LP, but I think it's a very aurally pleasurable track and it's almost as good as anything on For Emma or Blood Bank (both of which I'm a huge fan).

The structure and syntax aren't bothering me as much as they seems to be bugging you. Justin's voice is still eerily sweet and drenched with world-weariness and melancholy. I like the instrumentals as well.

    Hope you're well :)

    Forever.

  • please please please review the new arctic monkeys album. it leaked

  • I more or less agreed with the review. Enjoyed the song, didn't love it. But having just downloaded the leak, this song fits far better within context of the album. Looking forward to your thoughts on the record. Big ups.

  • technically cal wasn't in the complete wrong. This is his 4th album. But For Emma was his third. Not many consider the 2 album's Justin Vernon did to be a part of anything related to Bon Iver.

  • Boney Vare. Brilliant.

  • OFF! T-shirt! Nice.

  • You're so mean Anthony! Look at that face at 0:52. He was just trying to fit in, but you keep shooting him down! Why must you be so mean?

I'll go stand in the Whak Cal Zone now...

  • the album leaked...justttt sayin. not promoting illegal downloading...just promoting illegal downloading.

  • 2:12? DID YA SCREW UP THERE? HM? DID YA?

  • kinda like this track.

really though, you should whack cal

  • Review "Actress" by Aeon Flux Capacitator

  • I enjoyed the subdued orgasm part with the brittle guitars....

  • CHILDISH GAMBINO!!!!

  • Review this will destroy you

  • Why does Cal always wear the same shirt.

  • Oh i'm definitely excited for the new Bon Iver album. He never fails to make me happy with his music!

  • Calzones. Like the pizza! I love Calzones!

  • If Bon Iver becomes Iron & Wine by breaking the gradual lack of intimacy, IMMA RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGe.

  • review this album next, lol. it leaked.

  • @alex93metallica wtf where man!!??

  • @AmorBravo no data could answer a question like that. no data at all.

  • Mmmm... now I want a Calzone.

  • the whack cal zone has an efterklang poster. nice.

  • If I have to be honest, it's my most anticipated album this year. Even with the synths, like you said, the mood is still there and and Justin's melodies haven't changed in the slightest which still makes for a perfect atmospheric track. I don't even really want to get on the leak of it just yet.

  • Also you got me when you said 4th album, i was like: WHAT! I don't have all the Bon Iver albums!!

  • Another track, Holocene, has also been leaked. So excited for this album.

  • I'm not really liking Calgary right now, too synthesized. You're right the folk sound is gone. Not too sure how i feel about it. We'll see when Bon Iver comes out...

  • Bon Iver is a band. Justin Vernon is the frontman, no? Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • I had a wack calzone last week. Had diarrhea for days.

  • I don't know if you review leaked albums before they're actually released, but can you please review the album 'Torches' by Foster the People? Message me if you need it in a zip file.

  • Review Telekinesis "12 desperate straight lines"

    do it.

  • Everytime I watch your videos I get the urge to punch you in the face and I honestly dont know why..
