justin vernon is part of bon iver, not bon iver its self, I have seen justin play by himself, and with different bands... and seeing as how he does his recording in a small recording studio just outside his home town eau claire. but say what youd like about the music... bc bon iver is up for some grammys
also i think i agree with your thoughts on the new textures in this album. it is a new sound for bon iver, and the percussion certainly makes the song easier to bob your head to, but as of now the other instruments act kind of like fireflies floating around the melody, lighting at the right times but really lacking any sort of rhythm themselves in a way that contribute to the song's direction as a whole. i think sculpting this nick will push their music into something more coherent as a band
awesome review my friend! i agree that there is something sort of tangible in the honesty found in his voice. i'm not sure how he does it, but there is emotion--regardless of what exactly it describes--felt in his voice. i have yet to look really listen to his lyrics, only take in the feelings they give.
Hinnom, TX !!......and dude don't break a song down like a movie or video game..picking it apart so much....you either like it or not with music. rating a song? lame.
You know what's weird? I never thought of Bon Iver's music as particularly sad. Aside from "The Wolves (Act I and II)" and "Blindsided," I was never able to pin that mood on it.
Especially this track. I think it's a beautiful, content love song.
I wrote an interpretation of it on songmeanings . com if anyone's interested. It's under the name "aquarius121."
thank you god for people like you. well-made review sir! i'm a huge bon iver fan (don't believe me? check my cover of Skinny Love...I don't do all out recordings for covers for very many bands...or artists for that matter). i felt the same way about this! i totally think the full album is gonna make this sound more complete. thanks for the review :)
if anyone has ever taken time out of their busy schedule of mundanity to read an interview with Justin Vernon, they'd realize that he himself pronounces it Bone Eevair.
What I have heard already of this album (here and on NPR) really makes me excited! It does have an initial allure, but I really have the sense that I will grow to LOVE this album in a big way as did FEFA; Justin's music seems to grow on me in this wonderful way over time.
I think the arrangement is actually brilliant because it does on one hand sound quite professional and well produced and still keeps that indie feel to it.
I predict Bon Iver will be an album of the year candidate this year.
The final "orgasm" of the song made me have an Orgasm, it may not have moved/pushed someone who isn't as compelled to listen to Justin Vernon, however for the people who are that final blast in the songs was like a build up of emotions it powers through and gives you a feeling like a rush of adrenaline, it's brilliant. I can't be more exited about this album.
You always need a fucking expert... i wish you would just shut the fuck up, listen to an album, then go for a walk rather than feeling the need to post yourself talking absolute jibberish.
I'm someone who is into all of this Acoustic Indie Folk stuff but I've never been big on Bon Iver. Hes kinda like the Coldplay of Indie Folk. All style and no substance. I just generally think this guys overrated.
@tallestfoxes I have heard it. I'm not making a direct comparison to Coldplay either. I'm saying that on first listen I really liked some coldplay songs but on multiple listens I just got bored. The same thing happened with Bon Iver. His Style was attractive at first, but IMO he didn't really have a lot of substance to back it up.
Justin Vernon has put together some of the most moving music in the history of sound and yet most people (if they have even heard of him) think his name is Bone Iver.
I guess you are entitled to your opinion, but for godsake back it up with something thoughtful.
@TheRyduff How is this guy underrated? Maybe compared to the stuff they play on the radio, but this guy gets a lot of attention from the Indie community. I mean I can see where you might not think he is overrated but its hard to say he's underrated.
i think that the tracks on for emma where more touching than calgary is. it's still a wonderful song but when i listen to beach baby, the wolves or flume i get goosebumps and a feeling that i can't describe. didn't happen with calgary.
I think the fact that it doesn't blossom into a full on Coldplay style anthemic build is precisely why it's so successful...it doesn't sound formulaic because of this, and keeps the focus on his amazing vocals...
@errorspending i also think that it's good that the track didn't do that, but i don't think that's what the reviewer is saying. his point is that it doesn't blossom; is badly produced. bon iver can make a bigger sound without sounding cliche, i'm sure of it; but he kind of falls flat here, in my opinion.
@GraceBlanchflower ...I'm not sure what he could specifically do to make the song sound any better. I think the production is actually quite perfect. the various reverbs used for the different drum elements are really interesting and create a wide range of depths within a very lofi aesthetic. It feels very intimate and huge at the same time to me....which is a very difficult thing to achieve. What do you think he could do differently to make it bigger sounding?
This song is so lovely. If you like this you may like my song that I wrote inspired by Bon Iver... It's called 'Disappearing in Oxford' Check it out on my channel :)
Not sure if you really do soundtracks, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on The Chemical Brothers' ST for Hanna. It's one of my favourite albums in a while...
@nge1301 Thanks! Haha I've had a lot of birthday wishes today but I didn't expect one from a random youtube comment... what a pleasant and appreciated surprise. Anthony is responsible for bringing yet another increment of joy into my life. Not as awesome as all the music he makes me discover but awesome nonetheless!
As much as I love Bon Iver, I kind of have to agree. I expected the song to swell a lot more but felt like the lo-fi style held it back - which is sad because I bet in a live performance the song lifts, but in the lo-fi style, it stays back.
Having said that, I couldn't help but crob (play continually on repeat) this track. Its so damn beautiful. ...It does make me wonder, what would of happen had it been produced with more sophistication.
I don't understand how you take issue with the lo-fi quality of Bon Iver when it's being done intentionally. Seems a bit like your trying to find a fault with it rather than it actually being there. However I take your point about the aimless guitars. I'd give it a decent 8 - I think it'll be better as part of the while album rather than a stand alone track.
I really hate you. You don't know shit - you only review mainstream shit and also it's not "bone iver", it''s french, shut punch yourself in your nazi face, go cry over your military look (please) and stop reviewing stuff. Every single thing about your voice, your mimic and your look is just soooo naff, man.
review the new Saigon album "The Greatest Story Never Told"! and if it's too late to talk about that one, review the new Pharoahe Monch album "W.A.R. (We Are Renegades)"
Anthony, I know you probably won't review the leaked album, but man trust me I tried restraining myself but believe me not even Jesus could go through that temptation. And let me tell you it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard, every track melts into one another, Justin's voice is more submerged into the cadence of the songs, somehow, juxtaposed by "For Emma, Forever Ago" its different but so familiar. An early review would be great, if not, ill wait, but I'm not good at that..
I really like this track better than anything on For Emma, because not only does the pitch actually fall into place from his singing (perfect pitch for the lose :\), I find the extra distortion (can we stop calling it lo-fi?) to be a great effect when Vernon strains his vocals at the same time. And overall, I think this song feels more complete than anything on FE,FA.
I'm enjoying Calgary quite a bit. I agree that it will most likely sound better within the context of the LP, but I think it's a very aurally pleasurable track and it's almost as good as anything on For Emma or Blood Bank (both of which I'm a huge fan).
The structure and syntax aren't bothering me as much as they seems to be bugging you. Justin's voice is still eerily sweet and drenched with world-weariness and melancholy. I like the instrumentals as well.
REVIEW Tinie Tempah Disc-Overy album looking forward to it even though i hate written in the stars but I heard his other stuff and its actually has some taste to it looking forward if you take a look at it FOREVER :D
I more or less agreed with the review. Enjoyed the song, didn't love it. But having just downloaded the leak, this song fits far better within context of the album. Looking forward to your thoughts on the record. Big ups.
technically cal wasn't in the complete wrong. This is his 4th album. But For Emma was his third. Not many consider the 2 album's Justin Vernon did to be a part of anything related to Bon Iver.
If I have to be honest, it's my most anticipated album this year. Even with the synths, like you said, the mood is still there and and Justin's melodies haven't changed in the slightest which still makes for a perfect atmospheric track. I don't even really want to get on the leak of it just yet.
I'm not really liking Calgary right now, too synthesized. You're right the folk sound is gone. Not too sure how i feel about it. We'll see when Bon Iver comes out...
I don't know if you review leaked albums before they're actually released, but can you please review the album 'Torches' by Foster the People? Message me if you need it in a zip file.

You're so mean Anthony! Look at that face at 0:52. He was just trying to fit in, but you keep shooting him down! Why must you be so mean?
I'll go stand in the Whak Cal Zone now...

If I have to be honest, it's my most anticipated album this year. Even with the synths, like you said, the mood is still there and and Justin's melodies haven't changed in the slightest which still makes for a perfect atmospheric track. I don't even really want to get on the leak of it just yet.

Also you got me when you said 4th album, i was like: WHAT! I don't have all the Bon Iver albums!!

I'm not really liking Calgary right now, too synthesized. You're right the folk sound is gone. Not too sure how i feel about it. We'll see when Bon Iver comes out...

Bon Iver is a band. Justin Vernon is the frontman, no? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know if you review leaked albums before they're actually released, but can you please review the album 'Torches' by Foster the People? Message me if you need it in a zip file.
