  • i have a red Aerodyne strat exactly the same as that in the video, the neck pick up sounds very nice. also the treble (bridge) pick up is very good

  • Sounds delicious.

  • Thanks for watching. This Aerodyne Strat was built for the Japanese market so the neck is slim. I checked out your channel vid and that Peavey amp is pretty darn rocking and that camera really sharp. Nice.

  • Hi Doug, really enjoy your videos and your playing. I had a question about the neck on your guitar; is it more of a 50's fat neck or more of a 60's slim neck?

  • Wow, that's such a coindence...I bought a used Aerodyne Strat in Black 2 mths ago after 9 yrs without any guitars- electric or otherwise. Luv the sound and feel of mine :)

Really enjoyed your playing. Should post more videos. I'm not a trained musician but I do have 1 original tune and some jams. Please check em out if U wish, thanks.

  • I'm so glad you have a guitar back in your hands and that you scored a nice electric. Thanks for the encouragement - I will post another vid soon. I am self taught too so keep writing and playing - the world always needs new music. I will check out your jams.

  • @smkonwater23-- Hi Doug, thanks for your reply and encouragement. Btw, I noticed other non music videos of yours..will check them out this weekend when I have more time. :) And yes..I hope to have more time and creative inspiration to write more original songs/music too.

  • im a bigger fan of the black aerodyne, but i think if i were to get my hands on one, id drop in a loaded pickguard with humbuckers or a dimarzio fast track pickguard for some higher output

  • If i had that guitar i'd switch the pickgaurd to a black one.

  • That would look excellent too. As it happened I replaced the white guard with a cream pearl pick guard that bumped up things quite a bit. Check out my August Porch Jam to see how that looks. Thanks for listening.

  • I used to know the words to that one.

  • Maravilloso!! genial!! 5/5!

  • Really good playing, love that guitar too.

  • And this is you after a hiatus? Wow. Really nice!

  • Thanks for listening. You're 18 and you write like that - let me know when your first book comes out!

  • dude, you rock. awesome demo!

  • Thanks a lot, glad you liked it. Loved seeing Dear Mr. Fantasy on your channel.

  • yeah, I love that song! Im a big fan of clasic rock and the original heavy metal bands =)

  • Great playing, thanks for posting. Glad you are back in business!

  • is that a Blues Junior you are playing through?

  • yes indeed - compact yet fun. Wish I had an old Princeton Reverb..but this Blues Junior does pretty well. Can't beat the initials....

  • haha i have the japanese one with dimarzio pick up ;) nice playing !

  • Thanks and glad to hear it. Wish I had a bit of your playing speed!

  • this is some really really nice playing! love to hear more from your playing. what is special about a aerodyne strat and a regular strat? thanks

  • Basswood body instead of alder/ash.

  • Love it Doug, beautiful guitar and playing.

  • this is bad ass!

  • Thanks Cory - great to hear from you. Glad you liked the Aerodyne Strat!

  • i have been thinking of buying this compared to an american standard. i love the way this one looks and its slightly cheaper, but as an owner what do u think about the sound?

i currently have an epiphone dot studio but i love the way strats sound

  • I think this guitar is better built that american standard. It's slightly thinner and lighter which made it more comfortable to me. Neck is also more precise to me. I replaced the sustain block (which is pot metal) and bridge plate with high quality replacement parts from Callaham Guitars and got a shorter stainless steel tremolo (David Gilmore model) and replaced the pick guard with an off white pearl pickguard. The tone was already good but now it's amazing. Mods cost about $200.

  • very nice, man ! who is playing, isn´t annoying :o)

  • Beautiful solo. I just favorited it.

I looked at one of these in the store, plus the Ibanez version. Hard to decide (money is an issue).

    Thanks for the music!

  • Thanks for listening - glad you liked it. Decisions, decisions...the right one will come.

  • Got one of these in black with cream trim!

    Haven't taken it off!

  • I can see it now! Keep it on and keep rockin'

  • i got on of these in the sam color,i was gonna get one in blond but it got sold out in guitat guitar, newcastle but for christmas (2008) i got a red one and i love it ot sounds really good and look that put a les paul flame top to shame

  • So glad to hear you like your new axe. There is nothing like having good equipment to help you advance in your playing. Thanks for letting me know.

  • i was looking for a review on this guitar and this is the only one i found. didnt disappoint. :D

  • Great demo! this video influenced me to buy an Aerodyne Strat about 4 months ago, great guitar! Can't go wrong w/this set up, Aerodyne through a Blues Jr. Thanks!

  • So glad to hear this - congratulations on your new rig!

  • Played this along with a few Highway Ones and quite a few standards in the music store, and I have to say, this one sounded the best. Japan has really showed up America on this strat.

  • Yeah, when I was a kid back in the 1960's, "Made in Japan" was the sure mark of inferior quality - how things have changed. When I read the back of the neck on this guitar and read "Crafted in Japan" I got excited - when I heard the tone, I got thrilled. It's like the Lexus of Strats.

  • Great playing, also.

  • Hi Doug,

first of all, great playing. Sounds fantastic!

I´m thinking about buying an Aerodyne too.

What amp do you use? I like the sound.

    Greetings from Germany,

    Michael

  • Right on Michael, thank you. I use a Fender Blues Jr amp which I am sure you can modify with different tubes and a different speaker but it still sounds pretty good as built. Keep rockin'.

  • Bought mine yesterday! Fell in love! ;-)

  • I am so stoked for you Michael - thanks for letting me know!

    Doug

  • you should get a pearl pickguard for like 20 bucks it would make it look 10 times better than it already does

  • What a great idea - I will check it out right away!

  • if u do get 1 make sure to post another vid of some more smooth riffing man

  • It's a promise - thanks for asking. I just looked at several "mother of toilet seat" pickguards on-line and you are so right - this is going to look great. I am going to put stainless steel screws in while I am at it. Thanks again for the idea.

  • you think with some humbuckers this thing would sound good for rock/metal? i love the look of it. great playing by the way, and the way you looped the backing bit was awsome!

  • I think you better go ahead and get a Les Paul or an SG to go with your Marshall stack to get that sound. This is a great looking guitar but it's always going to sound like a Strat. Thanks for the compliment - the loop station was a beautiful invention.

  • well tom morello plays a black one of these

    so listen to some audioslave

  • How is the tremolo bridge on this guitar? Will it be able to stand up for some light abuse?

  • I never use tremolo so I can't say for sure. It is a standard Fender tremolo bridge so it should stay in tune for a bit of abuse. Only one way to find out. BTW, I just looked at your video - great angle for watching you play... very fun.

  • Accidently deleted your latest comment. I believe scale length is standard on Aerodyne, nut is 1 5/8" and body is about 1/4" thinner than standard strat. It's lighter, well balanced and, like it says on the back of the neck, Crafted in Japan. Good luck on your new axe!

  • I live in Australia and I love this guitar but over here the Aerodyne sells for well over $1200AUD. Its crazy. Just for reference the Aerodyne model is Made in Japan right?

  • I have a nephew in Maroubra, NSW who told me a similar thing, ouch! On the back of the neck of my guitar it says "Crafted in Japan" and my understanding is they are made in Japan for the Japanese market, which accounts for the slightly trimmer construction and lighter weight.

  • whew, im glad i checked out this video before thinking about buying this one

dont get me wrong, your playing is awesome and the guitar must be great for like beach boy covers and stuff, but im looking for a more modern sound, any idea what kind of stratocaster i should look into?

  • In my opinion, you could plug this strat into the same amp configuration as any other strat and you could not tell them apart. When comparing strats, it's more about the amp, effects and playing style that gives a particular "sound." You want to buy a strat based on how well made it is, how comfortable it feels to play and how it sounds with and WITHOUT an amp hooked up. There are all levels of strats out there, when it comes to these factors, and every guitar is different soooo.

  • thanks a bunch!

i will make sure to browse through and try out some guitars at my local music store.

again, thanks for replying, rock on!

  • You're welcome - it's really the only way. Take a friend so you can get a second opinion and hear them play the guitar too. Buy the best quality guitar you can afford and go compulsive on practicing and you can get really good, really fast. Nail your school work, read, read, read, think about life and really care about others and soon you will have things to say that others will want to hear - that makes anything possible! Just a thought. Music is soul you can hear so shop on!

  • Great blues sound, I love the looks of it as well. How's this guitar playin' funkchords, does it sound any good? Great playing by the way.

  • Thank you, thank you. It really looks great from up close as the red lacquer is translucent - you can see through it to the wood grain. I am sure this guitar could get very funky, especially with a different amp and a very funky operator.

  • saw that the geets made of basswood. it's light right?! just wonderin how it feels cuz it sounds great!

  • Thank you for listening. This guitar feels silky smooth and the neck is machined very well. I don't know the characteristics of basswood but this axe is very light. I think most of this is due to the thinness of this Aerodyne Strat compared to a standard Stratocaster.

  • thanks that helps alot!

  • thats so cool, it sounds like there is 2 guitars playing

  • There are two guitars playing - I used a phrase looper pedal to record the rhythm pattern and play it back over and over while I improvised the lead.

  • woah thats cool, sorry i don't know much about that stuff :P i have the basic guitar/wire/amp

  • I just watched your video Dustin and you are definitely ready to have some major fun with a phrase loop station. Looks like you have a nice guitar, amp and PA and you play pretty well so go check one out at the music store and keep on jamming.

  • thanks, and that video was recorded about a year ago so to me it looks pretty bad :P but i will deffinitly check out a phrase loop station, thanks

  • A TOM MORELLO USES AN Aerodyne Strat

  • I really want the Aerodyne in black, but can't find it anywhere on the net or in shops around where I live (Manchester, England, probably not the best place, hehe).

I was wondering whether there is any difference between the almost impossible to find black model, or the red, blue and natural models?

If anybody has any purchasing suggestions, or helpful links, please message me!

Help out a fellow musician :)

  • Yeah, it looks like black has been discontinued which only means one thing - more expensive, if you can find one. The flame maple top comes through nicely with any of the transparent colored models and the red is pretty darn sweet. All are the same guitar design as far as I have read.

  • i just checked the fender website and its listed at 999... considering that, i got a great deal on it... but if you payed 450 for a new1 then u practiclyy stole it.. keep rockin.

  • So glad you got one. Yeah, mine had been hanging around Moonlight Music a bit. I passed right by it when I was looking too. I paid a total of $550 for it with the used hardshell case. Best bargain I ever found.

  • wow great playing... i just got the same guitar today... but i payed a lot more than 450 ...prices vary i guess depending on where youre at

  • awesome very sweet and soulful im planning on saving up for an aerodyne over the summer

  • You're sweet and soulful for saying so. There is no more worthy thing to save up for than a nice axe - good luck on this effort.

  • wicked sick

  • Right on poolguy, you make and old man smile.

  • i as well have an aerodyne stratocaster but all solid black, love the sound but i've read some reviews about it and some arent to happy with the quality and all that. to me i dont c anything wrong jsut more improvment. Whats ur opinion?

  • I can only speak for my guitar - I think it is very well made for the price point of $450. Naturally, there could be improvements, it's a $450 guitar.

  • dude i got the same guitar, i just got it like 2 months ago, its soooo nasty.

  • U GOT SOUL MAN LOVE IT

  • Thanks much. Is that Hillsong Solution video you? If so - looks like you are already a musical religion in Canada...WOW!

  • No nicer words can a musician hear - thanks!

  • nice playin.i have the aerodyne p bass

  • They made 'em in dark red?

  • bloody briliant!!

  • I'm glad you liked it and thanks for making my day!

  • AWESOME JAM:D

Can you tell me a little about the neck, is it C or D shape? I got a D Strat to my knowledge but seems it don't matter. Just play notes hehe. In the market for a Aerodyne i am hehe. PS: LOVE IT:D

  • Hi Doug, I enjoyed listening to your playing here on this vid clip. I found it from a yahoo search on Moonlight Music. I had not been there in something like 17 years, and was wondering how things are going in Encinitas, a lovely little beach town where I had some good times. I've heard about the Aerodynes, but thanks to this, I'm going to have to pick one up and have a go with it. Thanks! Dave Ryan

  • Right on Dave - so glad you found the video and enjoyed it. Encinitas is a lovely place and Moonlight Music is a great little store. Hope you find an Aerodyne with your name on it soon!

  • wow nice playing and the guitar just sounds awesome.

I think either that Strat or the Lite Ash one will be my next guitar.

Pups get swapped out for hot Rails then ;)

Just need to compare those both in my local guitar shop.

  • Thanks very much. Congratulations on your upcoming new axe - buying a guitar is one of life's great moments - enjoy it!

  • theres no better feeling then walking out of the store with a new guitar...youre right ;)

  • I play an aerodyne telecaster (black), one of the best sounding teles I have ever put my fingers on. Japan rocks!!

  • i got me one of the origonal aerodyne's, the black ones. they're damn nice guitars

  • do they still make the black ones because i havnt seen any in guitar shops since i got mine .

  • nah don't think so. all the better for people like us who have black ones

  • First off I have to say nice playing and improv, I want to be able to do exactly this eventually. But I was looking at this guitar and I think I want to buy it, can you tell me how the neck felt? I know the radius is 7.25" which is relatively smaller than the average, but that worries me because it's supposedly bad for lead. Did this guitar seem to be hard to play on or was it just like any other guitar to you? Thanks in advance, even if you can't remember...keep playing!!

  • Can't remember - who told you? When I picked up this Strat and felt that thin smooth, well-machined neck, it was all over. For any neck, the thickness and radius are personal taste issues, but it's how precisely the neck has been made that really matters. The better quality the road, the faster and smoother you can drive - same thing. To me, these Aerodynes are a really nice ride so if it feels good to you, get it before someone else does!

  • A few guitar faq websites say that guitars with smaller neck radii are more curved, making it really hard to bend strings without popping adjacent ones, and it also makes it slightly different the way you have to place your fingers. You seemed just fine though, the way you played!! I guess it's just a personal preference, I will be sure to try it out and find out for myself. Thanks for the good advice!

  • You're pretty good. Nice work. Nice strat.

  • Considering the caliber of your "favorites", your comments are especially appreciated. Thanks.

  • Yeah, don't let my favorites fool you. I know good music when I hear it.

  • nice guitar. i have a 61 strat reissue from 95. i like it. most strats are good quality. yours has a awesome tone. keep up the good work man.

  • I was born in '60 - I wish I could get reissued! Stratocasters are tonal electric guitar heaven - congrats on having yours.

  • Do you play any metal guitar music? Just by hearing you sound pretty darn good, don't let anyone tell you different!

  • I admire metal players but that stuff is way too fast for me to master. Thanks for the positive feedback - it is greatly appreciated.

  • Do you play any hard tunes from your guitar? if so, what is one them? I just heard only 18 seconds of this tune, but again you got some real talent here! Keep it up!

  • I pretty much specialize in stuff that is easy to play but sounds OK. That's the plan anyway.

  • What kind of delay are you using?

  • No delay - It just sounds like it when the identical riff is played on top of the phrase looper playback track.

  • as a fellow strat man I must say... damn, and in a good way... great tone and unique style...

  • Thanks for being kind to your elders. Strats rule.. keep strumming!

  • My peers are all metal guitarists so to them I, as they say, play like an "old man"(because I rarely just shred my solos)... What can I say, David gilmour is my biggest influence musically...

  • Hilarious. David was always my favorite and an absolute master of taste and emotional content in his leads. A timeless mentor for sure.

  • we would have fun playing together.i dig your style

  • you choose great tones at great times.

  • That's a very nice thing to say - thank you.

  • im not worthy

    damn man

  • aerodynes arent that commom are they i have a solid black one if u wanna see it just tell me by posting a coment on one of my vids or somthing .

  • Hi..may i know what's the difference between strat aerodyne and normal strat in sound comparison?, anyway cool playing

  • I have not played enough of both types of guitars to know. My guess is that if you had 3 American Stratocasters and three Aerodynes played through the same amp - you could not pick out the Aerodynes. In reality, every single guitar is unique, even the same models from the same production run - some will sound better than others. But basically, Strats are like pizza, even if it's bad, it's still pretty good!

  • Aerodynes are generally lighter and thinner and have a painted headstock, whereas the normal Strat has a natural one. Aerodynes also have a noticebly clearer sound than most Strats. I think that's all though.

  • woooooooow. cool playing. 5 stars. are you really just improvising or is this a song?

  • Thanks very much. The background riff is a song I wrote called Energy Independence and the lead was improvised. I'm a self-taught player so my songs and lead chops are relatively simple but it's all about having fun and playing with passion. I am really glad you liked this - keep on playing

  • Self taught? Nice one, as a self taught player myself it gives me hope that if I stick at it I can one day reach that standard.

    Very nice.

  • Glad you found this inspiring. It's all about maximizing your ability to express. It only took me 30 years to learn to noodle like this - if I had it to do over, I would take lessons! Keep playing.

  • nice playing..are these worth buying was looking at one other day had an all black finish looked cool n want bad price ticket either 457 i saw it for.they a nice play..sounds nice here but its only youtube

  • Thanks for listening. If the guitar you are looking at sounds good, plays well and looks cool enough for you to want to pick it up and play it then you should buy it. The key is to get an axe you like and keep on playing because no matter what guitar or pedals you use, it is ultimately your skill level that determines the biggest part of your sound.

  • Nice playing... hey... I tried one of these guitars today... It was a made in Japan one.. are they made in various countries...? By the way... I tried about half a dozen guitars and this one stood out... It had the "hottest" pickups and some of that "snap" that I clearly hear in the audio for this video...

  • Thank you. As far as I know, Aerodynes are all made in Japan. This model is a stand out strat in all ways - excellent quality for the money. The snap (clarity of tone) is definitely there. Rock on.

  • I have a rare discountinued aerodyne strat looks reallly nice with tex mex pick up perfect for that SRV tone!!!

  • anybody knows anythin about this axe's sustain?

  • favorited... that was beautiful.

  • Thanks very much... I checked out your favorites and I'm beyond honored to be included in that group.

  • Darn, Doug. If you hadn't moved away, we could have been rock stars together ;)

Great sound and very good skills. If you ever come over to Phoenix, bring your axe and we'll play.

  • Wow Matt, thanks so much for getting in touch. It's hard to believe 33 years have passed since our friendship in junior high. Fortunately, you're never too old to play music (unless you're a drummer, ha ha) and ya never know what the future may bring. There's a drum set waiting for you in San Diego anytime you're out this way too.

  • Niiicee... I'm looking into either an Aerodyne, Deluxe Player's Strat, or a 60's Reissue for my next guitar. Could you tell me what amp and distortion pedal you're using?

  • Congrats on finding a great new guitar. I'm using a new Fender Blues Jr amp and a reissued "The Rat" distortion pedal in this video.

  • nice sounds man, check my channel for vids of me and my aerodyne tele

    peace

  • I enjoyed checking them out - the tele and your other axes all sounded excellent. You have quite a unique and original style.

  • that aerodyne classic strat is what i'm saving up to get

  • Good eye, you won't be dissappointed. A nice electric guitar is the most fun for the money on the planet so keep saving and make her yours.

  • Hey man, you and your baby are sounding good! You have to jam with my brother one day.

  • Hey there Nanook - I'm counting on making it to New Zealand some day and making this happen. Then we can say, "Kiwi be jammin!"

  • Thats rad, i enjoyed this. I'm pretty sure i was actually in the music store when you bought this. Great guitar, and great playing to go along with it.

  • Nice of you to say so, thanks. Moonlight Music is the coolest and having all of those young musicians in there made me feel young again too - which is getting harder and harder to do - so thanks again! Keep rockin'...

  • Right on - I bet your bass sounds great. These Aerodynes are truly well-crafted instruments.

  • i enjoyed this. i play a fender aerodyne bass. its awesome i love it.

  • Worthy of any tabletop in any bar, anywhere on the planet - even the ones with wobbly legs:)
