@surreydodger Knew I'd seen the funny fat little prick before, lol. Love him. He brings out the best in everyone.. Love AM live on JH! Got Tickets for Arctic Monkeys in Oz in Jan. Fully stoked:)
It's great to hear someone singing in their own regional accent rather than adopting a fake American one The Proclaimers, the Arctic Monkeys and Ian Dury did the same thing on a regular basis.
this is a great song, its just apity that the end instrumental is waayyyyyyyy too long. The verses and lyrics make this song what it is, yet they appear to just give up half way through the song. There was room for sooooo much more !!
hehe well considering back in 78 I had a pure east ender accent. Now it only comes out if I am pissed off or drunk :)... or talking to English people. But I was a huge squeeze fan in 70's. Was one of the few bands my parents let me listen to
jezz I feel old, I remember the first time this came on the air. loved it back then...It'd still a good one. Scary to listen to how I used to talk thirty years ago :). Sadly I have an aussie accent these days....
@TassyFC2 what do you mean sadly? The Aussie accent (except victorians and perhaps queenslanders) is the best accent to have. In particular those in South Australia (which I have been constantly told all my life have a very distinctive and clear pronounciation of words with a hint of a English accent)(Im a SAer) I can just barely remember when this song came out too. I thought it was about gays.
The squaw is actually a possible swear word. I remember my mother superior who probablblbibblybobbly worked in the reservtion said "sqauw means CUNT or something". But I stand to be corrected Please let me know in no uncertain terms if I have actually 'slipped up' I will forgive your brutal unfeeling treatment of me and shall work towards an uncompromising compromise.
this was 1979 music ? fuck... John lennon was still alive till late 1980 interesting... modern music.. tho john lennon was more of a classic style of the 60s and 70s kinder lookalike. course in 1979 there was modern rock bands who looked quite modern like the 80s
Good song when it came out, but it hasn't stood the test of time. Sounds very dated now. Mind you I doubt that it was written all those years ago, with the aim of still sounding good 30 years in the future, in 2011.
i wish they still made music like this its so catchy now evry thing is like makeup and autotune crap im 16 and id like to know what other bands are like this bloke
No..The backing singers were called 'The Fabulous Wealthy tarts' and provided backing on quite a few tracks at the time including Paul Youngs hits a few years later
Saw them last week. Been a fan for about three years now, I'm only 15 but I actually love them! They're really good live aswell. I saw Glenn Tilbrook on his solo tour aswell last year, honestly think he's as good solo as wil Squeeze. I'm trying to get some of my friends into decent music, almost there. Got some into Madness and about 2 people into these! <3
I remember last year on the car radio this song came on, and they started playing an ACOUSTIC VERSION! It was Awesome, the poor guy was almost out of breath by singing and playing the guitar! I'd say it's even better than this version! I'll never forget the amount of Laughter after the song had finished! The sad thing is I haven't seen or heard an Acoustic version ever since then..... ok, i'm 28, and wasn't even born when this came out, but bloody love it! please can some people educate me on these people, why haven't I already? I blame my parents for not telling me!
@gbuck1982 Yeh, your folks should be hung, drawn and quartered for not introducing you to Squeeze. Well, had a go at anyway ;-) Rather than me type loads and loads here you should just look up Squeeze on YouTube. Chris Difford has just released some new versions of his songs too. Another member of the band was Jules Holland who went off on his own and you might like his stuff too. Both of them are VERY talented. They all get back together and Squeeze do surprise gigs now and again
@gbuck1982 DOH !!! Jools Holland not Jules. And Glen Tilbrook, who wrote a lot too does stuff on his own. Dunno what country you're in but look up a BBC programme called " Later with Jools Holland " You might find some stuff on there ya like

I didn't grow up in England, but I loved the accents - it sounded as though it was someone from the Sweeney singing it. No faux American accents.
The Squeeze was immensely popular without becoming megastars, although Jools Holland is definitely A-list. He's a sad loss to music.
