  • I just found out this plane is only an hours drive from where I live in Portland Oregon. I'm making it to that museum asap!

  • the glory days of aviation. Man those guys were smart back then. To design so much without computers or modern technology.

  • An-225 Mrija lol USA!

  • Comment removed

  • The biggest plane in the world is antonov with 96 meters or so, this is just 85 or so.

BUT THIS HAS THE BIGGEST WINGPAN EVER

  • Nice Video!... Thanks For Sharing!

  • Lol , the title is wrong: large plane...

    This plane is FUCKING HUGE!!!!!!!!!!

  • It still belongs in Long Beach California

  • Now if that was a Decepticon...

    Shit.

  • I noticed when you said it makes a B-17 look small you actually showed a DC-3. Did you mean a DC-3 looks small or did you mean actually a B-17 and showed a DC-3

  • Howard Hughes was very ambitious. He had three major goals.

1: He wanted to be the richest man.

2: He wanted to be the best aviator

3: He wanted to be the best golfer

He was the richest man, best aviator, and he turned out to really suck at golf.

    poor guy.

  • my great grandfather worked with him :D NO LIE!!!!!

  • @OoxNoScopeZO bullshit

  • @fabricioteidy fuck you man!!!!

  • @OoxNoScopeZO im just playing around jeez loool

    no sense of humor??

But what did he work on ur grandpa?

  • quasar

  • Who own's the plane?

  • They shipped it to mcminville and assembled it in a building designed around it. It really is bigger than tge camera makes it seem lol

  • i believe that it was a gigantic version of the grumman goose

  • first things first how they get that plane to fit in there did they take off the wing

  • Thats fucking huge.

  • The plane was made out of wood? That's not dangerous.

  • I live in oregon, And I just whent to the new waterpart that they have, and while I was there I took A look at it. that camera makes it look smaller than it actually is

  • Poor aircraft. Unlike the Concorde, this beast never really had a chance to go into commercial/military service.

  • @anzin74 yeah you're right

  • I'VE BEEN THERE!! its actually breath taking when you see it in real life video can't compare!UNLESS you have a screen the size of the spruce goose, but then you5r brian would explode from all the static and radiation from the HUGE LCD HD tv!

  • Dude!! I was there too! Amazingly big!

  • I like this plane, can anyone fly with it (a rich guy as example) : )

  • A thing of beauty. Just imagine : HH flew this! BTW, HH was a cute dude.

  • fuck 8 engines ...why not 20 ?

  • I remember that, i went inside of it it's pretty fucking huge, but i can't remember which museum it's in, somewhere near high wycombe?

  • Howard Hughes crashed in 1946 and his health went down hill. He took pain medication because of the pain in his neck. Pills and shots everyday. Hughes was a brave test pilot, but the risks are very high, and the consequences can be severe. This "Spruce Goose" was a military contract. This man was also quite the PlayBoy which led to his divorce.

  • ive been to that flight museum in oregon, the thing is frickin huge. It was pretty cool inside but they wouldnt let us into the cockpit.

  • I wish I was as insane as Hughes.

  • @johnnywitchburner Howard Hughes began having problems when he did a stunt for a movie he was producing, and noone would do the stunt because the plane was unable to do it. Hughes flew the plane himself, and crashed. He hit his head on the dash, which caused traumatic frontal brain injuries. The part of the brain that controls problem solving.

  • that plane is fucking huge

  • i started building a 1/32 scale model of this and it wouldnt fit in my room ha ha

  • It WAS NOT made out of wood...

  • I got to see and go inside this plane back in 1981. What an awsome plane and I also walked inside the two hangers it was bilt in, located in Culver City Ca. Wings were in one hanger and the fuselage was in the other. I'm told the hangers were the largest wood structures ever built back then. From inside I threw a baseball up and I could not hit the ceiling. Long Beach should of never sold her. Looks like she's in a good home.

  • whats with the beach balls

  • @MrFelt1000 help the wings float in water better

  • B-17...? fail

  • It flew to Sydney and back at night time.

  • i went there 2 dys ago

  • Pussies. Fire that thing up and take her for a spin...

  • @beeroosterm Easier said than done i'm afraid.

  • @BikingArchitect From what I can determine about its condition (well preserved), it might be possible if someone were willing to pay. Frankly, I think the thing is at the least underpowered and at best probably poorly engineered. It is probably fro the best that it stays in a museum. What a waste, though. It would be one thing if it were the last of its kind and retired after years of proven service and quite another for something that barely got off the ground. I say go for it...

  • This is still the biggest plane, and as said in the video, Howard Hughes has designed, and made this plane, people think the Antonov 225 is bigger, but it issnt, and this thing did really fly, and just a tip.. Howard Hughes and the Sprooce Goose come in this movie, which is released already:

    The Aviator

  • I love that people list the range and speed for a plane that flew only once - for a mile and in ground effect. That's are the only proven flight envelope, so...Range: 1 mile. Max ceiling: 30 feet. Speed: 80 knots. Not very impressive. Fly the fucking thing!. They built boats for years using the same process that are still in prime shape. Fly the fucker or shut up!

  • @beeroosterm The ship DID fly. Your knowledge of flight is not thorough enough to employ flying only in ground effect as a label that the aircraft didn't really fly/could not have flow higher than the ground effect range. Maybe you would like to s t f u.

  • @italianfashionllc Christ...maybe you should learn how to write using proper sentence structure. Regardless, my assessment is accurate. The plane didn't fly out of ground effect and as far as I can tell flew at only 80 knots at FL 30 feet. Therefore, its proven flight envelope is precisely as I stated. That it had a potential to fly higher/faster was only a hypothesis for this grossly underpowered, overhyped plane. Unfortunately for you, we'll never know. That being said, perhaps you should STFU

  • @vilepium lol

  • Mmmmhmmm, and I bet your car is real loud...sure sign of a teenie weenie.

  • @vilepium you are a dick head ^^

  • @vilepium vai se fuder troxa, esbrulho de merda...

  • @vilepium If that was true you wouldnt be able to live due bloodloss : mediumsized dick ftw bigdickers are just retards. same goes for smalldickers.

  • Actually it was not even suppose to fly. the plane was partially financed by US government as a war plane, there was a big inquiries on the cost of it etc and the plane was grounded Hughe requested tobe allowed to 'taxi' the plane from its dock accross the Bay to a different hangar but he had a plan and informed the press;during taxiing he pushed the plane up to flight. and yes it was kept ready to fly at all time.

  • I read that up until his death Hughes kept this aircraft absolutely flight ready, even upgrading the engines....

  • doesn't look like wood

  • i know not 190 tons that 400,000 weight

  • lol November 2 is my birthday :)

  • I heard that Howard Hughes shut it down on its maiden flight becuaue the thing was going to shake it self to pieces. I dont know if is true but might explain why there was never a seond flight but go Howard what a legend.

  • ok, lets replace the engines with 50% more fuel efficient engines with 50,000 lbs. of thrust, and 7,000 lbs. with afterburners. then replace the structure of the wings, vertical and horizontal stabilizers with composites to make it 50% lighter but 40% stronger. then, lets install a fly-by-light cockpit into it. Make sure to add more fuel tanks on the wings so as to increase fuel capacity by up to 30%.

  • @eduard11731 I agree, that would definitely allow it to fly regularly, but the cost would be high. What we could do is make a group and get heaps of people to request that at least one plane with all the material and aspects you listed. We could sell every single plane in the world to cover the costs of the 'Upgraded' Hughes H-4.

  • hold on 8 3000 horsepower engines???? you mean 300hp

  • Those engines look awfully puny!

  • At least it will be in excellent condition as a museum piece to go and see.... not a rebuilt- exactly as it woz.

  • its a good idea when filming to have a person stand near somthing so you can get the size and perspective of things.. this shows no size at all

  • pretty video

  • jesus christ mate. could you have spared us the text book and perhaps just told us the information instead of fuckin writing it down. its a video, not a book. voted down

  • thumbs up if you ended up watching this after seeing "aviator"

  • It has the largest wing span...ive been in it

  • That looks familiar to the Antonov 225

  • I have Always Loved that plane, I've seen it both in Long Beach and McMinnville. However in Long beach you could see more of the inside, even in the cockpit.

  • I was just in this thing a few hours ago. Freaking huge!

  • that is a huge plane, i wish i can own that one i would put my house in there

  • No negro would ever fly that!!

  • just imagine if those engines were jet engines lol

  • if i had enough money i would buy it back into service and stick turbo props on. It would stil be the largest plane in the world, at least by 2 measurements, height and wingspan.

  • Metal, (aluminum) was in shortage then. The Hercules was a "Test Bed" project, intended, partly, to develop new materials, building techniques, control systems and engines. The Duramold process that Howard developed, allowed the birch plywood to be molded into various shapes. The flight surface control system was the first to give artificial feedback to the pilot since hydraulics were actually doing the work.

  • She's a beauty!

  • Simply awesome !

  • This plane used to be in Long Beach next to the Queen Mary

  • why did he only fly it the once?

  • @DoNotuseEbid because it barely got off the water....

  • @gigobait:

No, because he built it for the military, but by the time it was done, the war as over.

  • Hughes absolutely loathed the nickname "Spruce Goose" and considered it a mockery of what he'd thought was his greatest accomplishment up to that time.

Btw, please check your English. Sorry to nit-pick but your sentence should read "It was its one and only flight," omitting the apostrophe in the word "it's."

    Thanks for the interesting upload,

  • Thanks for this posting. I really enjoyed watching this wonderful machine.

  • THAT'S A HUGHE MOTHERFUCKER

  • how the hell can that be made out of wood

  • @SodaPeanutGod it was cause, metal was too damn heavy, it woulda torn the whole thing, saw it in the Scorsesse movie with Leo DiCaprio

  • An engineering marvel built by one of the most brilliant men to walk the face of the earth. You were amazing Mr. Hughes!

  • pretty cool vid. thanks for posting it.

  • Wonder how it would handle flying at 25000 FT...

  • @cameltoejoe69 35000 ft i would explode....

  • Nice video! 5*****!

  • WUNDERFULL PLANE;MAKE NEW AND FLAY

  • i wanna know how they got that plain all the way to McMinville Oregon

  • Even with plane spelled correctly in the title of the video, you FAILED!

  • like i give a shit

  • watch the movie "The Aviator" and then you might start to care. Its actually a great feat to have built such a plane in aviation history.

  • cool vid :D but in case you didnt know, the aircraft at 3:55 isnt a B-17. It's a C-47

  • I thought it was famous because it never actually flew?

  • @BROOKS39 haha it flew once, but its famous cause its fuckin huge

  • @1969MustangMACH1 it only got about 20 feet off the water and they landed it back down.

  • @BROOKS39 i know right, those engines look like something you'd find on a cessna

  • @BROOKS39 largely underpowered, it flew only once in "ground efffect"...I think with 4Tupolev "Bear" engines (15000hp each=60 000hp= more than twice the original power) it's fly realy :-)

  • Wow thats one HUGE plane. Been a favorite next to the SR-71 Blackbird.

  • gr8 plane

    gr8 work

    5*

    but where is this museum/hangar?

    plz post

  • @TheCamJones Evergreen Aviation Museam in McMinville Oregon, about 30 minutes outside of Portland...check it out some time.

  • @TheCamJones i went to it and i am pretty sure the plane is located in a museum in washington but imnot sure. its either washington or oregon. it is somewhere in that area. it really is an amazing museum. you oughta go chack it out. :)

  • Nice video. I want to go see this plane one day, it must have been awesome to see it. It sort of makes you wonder what route the seaplane would have taken in history if the war had gone on longer.

  • SHOW THE GODDAMN PLANE ALREADY

  • @mit858585 hahaha yeah i tried to make an edicational video...cut me some slack..just skip ahead

  • Nice video and thanx for the info.,

    1969MustangMACH1.

  • This plane used to scare me when we would visit it in Long Beach, take in mind I was a kid back then. Now for a 60+ years old plane made of wood, it looks realy good.

PS: The QM1 on those visit was scary also. Hey big thing are super when you are aa kid.

  • Thank you for the history and the video

  • the mcminville hanger is like 5 minutes away from my house this plane really is a giant

  • It has longer wingspan than the Antonov 225 but it has a shorter fuselage.

  • oh right

  • It's an old vid. Not. It needs updating, however.

  • Comment removed

  • w0w what is that museum???

  • I would take a star destroyer over that thing anyday

  • Comment removed

  • the BV 238 was biger and better

  • Dang, if this plane was used during the war, I would of shot it down easily.

  • would be interesting to see it fly once more...

  • I'v seen it it's in the evergreen air and space meuseum and it tail highth is 384 feet high

  • yeah its crazy to see it in real life.

  • Why dont you take her out for a spin!

  • If that plane has only 1 mile that plane is considered brand new and may have uses in the future. I wonder what it would cost if it for sale?

  • 3:57 is a dc-3, not a b-17

  • thats not what the museam said....i would think they would be pretty damn sure

  • I can assure you that this is not a B17, it is a Dactoa, if you had any idea about planes you could see that this is not a B17, the fact it has 2engines for a start, no tail gun, no waist gun, no top gun, no guns atall! no raised cockpit, and just looks nothing like a B17.

  • ok well you know more then i do, ill fix it.

  • lol yeah its a dc3 for sure :)

  • its bigger than 747 an 225 and a380. wow hughes was a visionary, he was the best.

  • My moms bigger than that thing!

  • @CRFbadass My thing is bigger than that thing.lol

  • great video man

  • i live in mcminville and i get to see at least every week cuz my freind lives close by it and we sometimes go there its so awesome to see it

  • that's no B17.... it's a DC3.....

  • its a bit 2 small 4 my liking...

  • It needs to be bigger.

  • the correct name is the hk-1 or hercules. please make these changes to your video.

  • No its H-4 smarty Kaiser dropped out before the project was done leaving Hughes hence the "H" to finish the plane. The four is because it was his fourth design.

  • Hughes preferred it to be called the hercules. He did not like the term "the spruce goose". You are right about it being called the H-4 as well.

  • look at the info....

  • cool..was at mcminville last month and saw it..awesome!!!

  • Great, thank you !

  • I like how all the pictures came from Wikipedia.

Still, I'd love to see it in person.

    Good video.

  • like 2 of the pictures are wikipedia. thats it.

  • i am soo drunk and i love it

  • that is HUGE!

  • yeah ppl are always obsesed with big things

  • oo. kk thanks

  • where is this

  • watch the last few seconds of the video.

  • it couldn,t fly good because the propelers were so small, obviouse

  • yes the props of it has 3000hp each but a small prop engine could be powerful the nk12 has 15000hp

  • it´ s a small plane antonov 225 is more bigger than this one!

  • are you seriously that retarded to call this plane "small"??

  • this plane is HUGE because it has a very very fat fuselaje and is tall and have the largest wingspan ever and it is taller than an225 and the spruce goose it is 66m of large, a quesion, why the load it with beach balloons ???

  • They put the beach balls in the wing so it would float better :)

  • how have the beach balls stayed inflated after all this time?!

  • Idioot, we hebben het hier over minstens 60 jaar geleden...

  • your mother is an idioot asshole

  • Oh, okay, my mother is an idiot because you're comparing a plane that was build in the 40's to a plane that was build in the late 80's ? No sir, you're the idiot.

The an-225 might be longer than the Goose (84 mtrs > 66 mtrs) but the Goose's wings were a whole lotta bigger than the Antonov's (97.5 mtrs > 88.4 mtrs...)

So basicly EVERYTHING you say is just retarded...

Sorry for my crappy English, it's just my 3th language...

  • no I am not the idiot you are the idiot :D

  • Goddamn, you know I'm right.

  • yes you are right but why do you say idiot???

  • Cause you made a comparison only an idiot could make...

  • I'm going to have to agree with "transistory" here....

  • you can say it normal!

  • this was not the largest one , is one of the 4 largest, lol,is just the tallest and the one with biggest wingspan the largest one is the antonov-225

  • they can re-build this great plane with todays technology

  • nice video! and nice footage! this is one of my favorite planes! and i just love flying boats! also the much smaller PBY Catalina is another favorite of mine, and was a widely used plane in the pacific theater of WW2, overall great video! i got to get out that way and see that plane and museum, and it had 24,000 HP in total! that is insane!, but the size and cost and time building it and the jet age killed the goose, along with no need for troop transport after the war
