I can use my PreSonus Audiobox with two microphones to record simultaneously? for example an SM57 close to the amplifier and a AKG P220 for the room? as a dynamic and a condenser at the same time with my Audiobox? as always, very good videos. Greetings and thanks!
@garagebandandbeyond I was wondering what the best microphone for recording guitar amps is. (for rock and metal) Should I use dynamic or condenser? I've heard the sm57 or sm58 are good... thanks
Hey man, great video newbie question I didn't see answered. Do you just connect the mic directly to your line in on your mac, or do you have to run it through something else? Is there a concern of damaging your computer with the signal from the mic?
Be careful not to get your mics out-of-phase or you could end up weakening your sound instead. I think there are some pretty complex mathematics involved in getting multiple mics perfectly in phase.
This is just a great video. I'm just getting into recording our band's music and I'm trying to look for techniques and i found your videos and they actually helped me out a lot. Thanks!
Thank you so much dude for your effort to post this video . it was really big help to me. may I ask some question?? what Video Cam you use?? .. coz its amazing.. ahmm thanks again this really a big help to me! ..
Good tip! I bought a mixer with USB, large & small condensers, long cables and lots of stuff... just haven't put any time into experimenting with it. Your vids will sure help! I plan to do things like this, but nice to have someone give pointers. I like the idea of mixing real-world sound with the digital recording elements, rather than only adding computerized effects or using pedals only. I want to try multitracking weird percussive things like spoons and shakers and then bigging up the sound.
Thanks very much for you always helpful vids, i always find something interesting to learn from them.. just one question, my laptop soundcard dont support ASIO. im using audacity so far, is there a better program, any advice on it? thnx man much apreciated.
Great update on a classic recording technique, Lewin. I do a variation with two mics, acoustic guitar, soundhole pickup and an amp. Position guitar, amp and mics so that mic 1 gets mostly acoustic guitar and only a little of the amp. Set up Mic 2 to be the opposite. Pan the two tracks to favor opposite sides. It creates a great, full sound superior to duplicating and modifying a single track. Thanks for sharing your skill.
Lewing great great help!!!!!! anyway, is that ibanez guitar?.. i love semi hollows i have one but its making weird sounds when i have a high gain (od @ 11 o'clock and dist @ 11 o'clock) when playing two bass strings (lower E and A string).. thank you!!
Hey man, I just wanted to suggest that you do more contests. I really loving doing contests and they always inspire me to make some really good material. If you have any time for it that would be AWESOME!
Great video Lewin! Any advice on how you set the mics to avoid phasing? I am relatively new to home recording...I have a Tascam 788 portastudio and would like to record like this using a dynamic mic and a large diaphragm condenser mic....any advice on a quick placement of the mics to get me in the ballpark? Also I'd like to record some keyboard parts would the line out on the keyboard be ok to run direct into the recorder?
@BadBluesman887 Ys it's ok to run your keyboard direct. Keep your dynamic mic right on the amp, and your condenser far away, you won't have any phase issues.
you said we needed headphones or a better listening system then computer speakers but i could definitely could tell the difference without getting the headphones out
@Rockstar9322 Actually you'd be surprised at how low the volume was! It's the hall mic that makes it sound LOUD!! But it really wasn't very loud in the room.
@AB4UK74 do a search for my videos called "How to record multiple tracks at a time using Garageband " and then also "How to Multi Track in Garageband 11, iLife 11" if you have iLife 11 on your Mac.
@eXtremo1254 Because the speakers will ALWAYS sound better than the line out. Plus the line out on most guitar amps is NOT designed to be use as a source, but rather is usually part of an effect loop on the amp.
Hi Lewin!. I've been following your videos for a long time. And your tips have helped me A LOT to use garageband. And now I'm working faster and better in my channel projects. So, THANKS! :D, and keep it up with GB and Beyond.

Really great tip vid man...I knew a guy that used to do this when he used to rent out a space in the back of an all concrete factory...definitely an interesting sound from that.

I usually use 3 mics... a SM57 for high, a SM58 for mid and another one about 6 feet away from the cab for bass/low-end/room.

@timborocksloud everything was going through my interface which is a Presonus AudioBox USB

Thanks for your quick reply.
does that mean it would damage the computer if I just ran it straignt to the line in?
timborocksloud 6 months ago
@timborocksloud There really isn't anyway to connect a Mic to your mac WITHOUT an interface. Especially a condenser mic.
