As Americans when something happens first here in our history we have a tendency to say that was the first time it happened in the world. In a review of modern food stores a TV show once said that it was an American man that first invented and started a modern grocery store. I think this was in the 1800's. Surprisingly these new stores were for an emerging sociological phenomenon the American house wife or home maker and having her needs met with market ideas. pre government and pre monopoly
