This is a blast from the past. Sad part about it is that the guy who sang ( or did the lip syn) the duet killed himself shortly after this video aired. His name was Marque Smith
neofunkyman: Thanks for sharing this great video from one incredible group.
rarabarak: Next time you see Mary, tell her she's got a fan here! I love her spirit and the chemistry and presence this group has on stage....so rare! Interesting that the later videos are just as good as the earlier ones!
Okay now why can't songs today sound like this? I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was a kid. I couldn't remember who made the song but it just makes me move. Great blend of music and singing. :) <3
To call this jam mid-tempo is doing it injustice. But it's not a rock-steady funk number either. It's somewhere in between where you can just as easily dance in a club as you could lean back in your lounge chair with an ice-cold lemonade. This group had a unique flavor that was all their own and this song features the signature female lead along with the laid-back beat, cool lyrics. Probably my favorite song by them and it takes me back to '86, a time of innocence and childhood, sadly missed
@neofunkyman1 Ignore the comment above. I was born in the 80s so being able to take in any kind of footage of bands like SOS via people such as yourself as appreciated! Thanks.
Rare footage, yes! But with a twist; at the beginning of the song you can hear Alexander Oneal's vocals. At 2:26 you again hear Alexander Oneal's distinct sound, however he is not the one singing. I suppose it was a lip-sync type performance which was very popular in that era. Any other's catch that??
@ELMOsPECKER Correct .Yo Ol Skool Soul you :)) Indeed the song contains background vocals by Alexander O'Neal and Cherrelle . Noting that Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were producing for all of these top guys . You can sense the influence of "Saturday Love " by both artists especially when Alex and Cherrele sing together.Ol Skool for Ever !!
I discovered them only in 1984/85, when i bought the album "Just The Way You Like It " ...then I saw them in concert in 1986 ... That's odd, because -if i remember well- on satge they used those hexagonal drums that were fashionnable back then, and there it seems to be acoustic drums ... (or is it only my memory taht fails me...??)
I'm just curious, is this another footage from a UK tv show? If so, I must say UK TV had some Classic shows. I'm from the U.S. who loves her country I guess.
@neofunkyman1 Thanks for the information! I thought it might of been TOTP and did not know there was a Soul Train in the U.K. back then. Compared another ST posting to this same track here in the U.S and found the U.K. posting in my opinon was better. Again, that's just me! Peace.
@Screwball263 I never said Soul Train did! In the 80s Jeff Daniels hosted a British version of it each week. It was then followed by Solid Soul which went out at the same time slot
@miseththeymiseththey io meu nome e claudia do rio de janeiro adoro essa musica e amo a banda beijos do brasil..................................gostaria de ir ao show da banda conlhecer a banda.
I was there in England when this episode aired on a Friday night. It's from "Solid Soul" and this is the very first place (not the radio or TOTP) that I've ever heard this record. Before they had "Solid Soul" there was in fact a show that was sadly short-lived called "620 Soul Train" and I hadn't even thought about moving to England!
I know this is a filmed show but why is there a guy on a Bass Guitar. The bass in the song was played from an OB-Xa or Prophet Synthesizer by Jimmy Jam.. The second is why is there an acoustic drum player when the rhythm is played from a Linn-9000 drum machine.
@DHTSciFiArtist I suspect that whilst this was billed as 'live', it was probably a PA where they sung over the track. Back in the 80s I saw a number of supposedly 'live' gigs that were actually PAs - but most people didn't seem to mind as they just wanted to be there.
@neofunkyman1 I'm sure it was, just like American Bandstand was. Those shows are totally produced. It's not like they're giving a concert, it's just promotion.
I don't know if it will answer your question, but there's an OBX-A that was used ; in the other video for the same song, you can see the girl who plays the keyboards and the keyboard on top is an Oberheim OBX-A... by the fact, what's funny is that I've just commented about just the same thing on the other video before I saw your comment...weird,huh ??...
...As for the drums : already in the eighties, you could use an acoustic drum combined with piezoelectric triggers mounted on the surface of your drums, and you obtained thus "electronified" drums; that's why for many groups, you might be sure that you recognize the typical sounds that only Simmons electronic drums (remember ?? the hexgonal ones...) or drum machines (example: Linn drums) could produce; then when you watch some videos, you see they use acoustic drums:confusing?
...well, not so confusing,in reality; that means it's acoustic drums used with piezoelectric triggers that transform the percussion sounds in any form you want ...
Yes!! I gotta thank whoever uploaded the Soul Train S.O.S Band performance. This was the first time I saw them on TV when I was a kid. Good lookin' out pimpin.

The bridge on this song is actually sung by Alexander O'Neal. The band member here lip syncs the bridge in Alex's place.

Glad to see the crowd are dancing, they appreciated it - would pay alot to see this performed live.
See some crowds that did not realise what they were hearing and just STANDING - sick
Not this time though!

@TheCalebson That's because it actually is O'neal on the original recording. the band member lip syncs the part. :-)
