The kind of song that you never really pay attention to and then one day you realize just how great it is. Every Arcade Fire album is full of those songs.
For some reason, the line, "--because the tide is high and it's rising still, and I don't wanna see it at my Windowsill" has always stuck with me. The whole song (and album {and band}) is amazing, but that line just jumps out at me.
I think that his "fathers house" represents the world that the previous generation has created. "I dont want to live with my fathers debt, you can't forgive what you can't forget"- great line
@makecupcakesnotwar12 North America is a continent. America is not a continent. It's North America, Central America, South America or the Americas. America is not a continent.
I dont want to live in America no more. I can relate to that, it's truly a shame what our country has become. I wish I could have some pride in our country, but I can't convince myself in to a prideful state, although I wish I could. Our country was founded on the most noble and honorable of principles and values.... I don't know what happened.
@SeoulSon51 well we are not the only country that has been completely sucked dry by giant private mega banks that fund wars and unrest in the third world. Take a look at Greece where everyone is rioting because of the banks. The private corporate take over of America is the problem, but at the same time these "capitalists" push for consolidation of government and the promise of a wonderful communist paradise, even though the consolidation of government only gives them power.
I can really relate to this song. i think it's about how the children must live with the mistakes of the previous generation. We are inheriting a world on the brink of annihilation, a consumerist culture, environmental destruction and a lot of social programming (MTV). It is about rejecting these things and learning from the past and trying to not make the same mistakes as our fathers.
Neon Bible will forever be "the difficult second album" for critics, but it is a beautiful, elegant record that simultaneously lifts you above the furore and shit of everyday life and equally takes the blinders off your eyes and says "yeah, life isn't perfect."

Well, there's that line "World War III when are you coming for me?" I also think that the imagery of the rising tide has to do with the increasing paranoia that built up in the US following 9/11. But then again, a lot of it is about materialism and hollowness (MTV, what have you done to me?).

Yes, instead of Father's house referring to heaven or the church, I think in this case it refers to America in general. The "Fathers" of Arcade Fire are from Texas.
As far as waking up... I kinda like America, and regardless, I don't see how Canada or any modernized country is much different.

Canada didnt go to war with another country for the flimsiest of reasons, thousands of miles away resulting in millions of deaths

Millions of deaths hmm? You might want to check your numbers before spouting outrageous liberal propoganda.

'Outrageous liberal propoganda' that's hilarious. I'd be an outrageous liberal anyday.

what does this song have to do with canada or america or war?
PatCourtney 3 years ago
Well, there's that line "World War III when are you coming for me?" I also think that the imagery of the rising tide has to do with the increasing paranoia that built up in the US following 9/11. But then again, a lot of it is about materialism and hollowness (MTV, what have you done to me?).

Didn't Canada send troops to Iraq?
Nerdolympian 2 years ago
no
Canadian trrops are in Afghanistan. They didnt feel like it was right to invade Iraq without more concrete evidence of weapons of mass destruction.
