You made some very serious rookie mistakes, and if winds truly would have been 176mph....you all would probably be at the very least, seriously injured....more likely dead.
Eeeee, I woulda bailed a long time ago and wished like heck for a basement!! LOL at "flashBAM" Okay, it's time to go into the vehicle" Ya think?!? LOL When tornadoes in the forecast, I turn a deeper shade of chicken. LOL 5/5 stars for this inTENSE vid!
Why is it that I find that people who aren't from the midwest seriously over-estimate the power of a tornado? I bet even a strong dust devil would have these guys filling their pants. Tornados are so over hyped. The ones that are actually scary are incredibly rare, but when they do show up, it's genuinely horrific to witness.
Another problem encountered occurs when chasers drive around the barricade put up across the road to stop access to a town hit by a tornado. This happened in our town last year, our local officials had their hands full with the damage left after the storm and despite blocking off the area, chasers still let themselves in and ignored the barricades, creating more chaos. That is the type of stupidity that causes problems.
You're right, you're argument is total BS. There is no comparison between waves at the beach and tornados. It also becomes a problem when the sheriffs dept, and EMS personnel can't get down a road to reach an emergency when it is blocked by a chaser convergence scattered out across the road with tripods, cameras and people. That time lost in waiting for the road to clear can be a matter of life and death.
Ummmm..... if you don't know how a storm behaves then you should not be that close to the tornado. If that funnel had developed into a strong tornado, then you guys may have been seriously hurt. Also, don't follow other storm chasers.... how do you know they are going in the right direction?
No, I am a storm chaser as well, and it's not smart for people like that to be chasing storms they don't understand. If they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, a wedge could've easily overtaken their car and they would not be alive. It's videos like these that make other dumb people think they can go storm chasing. To all avid storm fans: DON"T CHASE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
I think this is none of your business. People can chase however they like. You don't seem aware that these people ARE experienced chasers. I also got hit by the same tornado (few miles up the road and completely on accident) and I was with three very experienced chasers. Nature can catch you by surprise and that danger is part of the fun. Complaining after a few people get too close is a waste of breathe. Let people do what they love, it's not your business to look out for their safety.
I have to disagree with you. Yes, it may be their choice to go out chasing but when they get themselves hurt, it is going to fall to the local emergency services that have to go out and pick up the pieces afterwards. Now if there are families that live here that get hit by that same storm, it puts a big strain on those EMS servicestrying to help the families and the thrill seeking chasers. Leave the chasing to the scientists and local storm spotters.
Thats a big stretch. We should outlaw big wave surfing because innocent people on beaches may get hurt, and the time it takes to potentially save a big wave surfer may distract emergency crews from saving everyday beach go-ers. Sounds like BS right? It is.
ok. im not one of these old farts that like to preach about being too close. but seriously, you're going to get you and your friends hurt.
"its not that intense, but if it flips us, we have seatbelts, right?"
the amount of ignorance astonishes me. i know that a ton of chasers got hit that day due to fast motions and bad road options, but the conversation is the scary part. you need to respect the storm or you will be that one incedent that ends "storm chasing" as we know it.
In the days of Bluestein, Moller, Doswell, etc, no chaser would have been foolish enough to get caught out there like that. Chasers are getting bolder in search of their "money shot" and it's only a matter of time 'till one records his/her own demise.
Yeah these are just a bunch of kids from Canada, they haven't really kissed the tornado until now. Hopefully they learn from it instead of grow courage from it.

Might have been "unintentional" to start, but it sure didn't seem like any of you were too concerned about getting away from it. Tornadoes are pretty easy to avoid if you're trying to :-)
...the point of chasing is NOT to get struck by a tornado. merely record and observe. leave the suicide runs to the guys in the armored tank we all call TIV.

I'll agree that was a bit of a dangerous move, but hey, skateboarders and daredevils do the same thing. It's risking your life. If you lived to tell about it, then you learned something. Your odds of surviving that again have gone exponentially down. I would not have actually gotten in the tornado's way; had it rapidly strengthened, that would have sucked. But you got the video, and I was entertained. Very risky, but good job. Honestly coulda done w/o the OMG over and over, but oh well...

Now imagine that the storm had escalated and you guys had died. Your last moments of life would have been ya'll screeching and hollering, "OHMYGOD! OHMYGOD! OHMYGOD!!!!!11one" You guys are lucky and stupid.
loved your video. Don't listen to the other idiots, they only wish they had experienced what you did. Tornadoes are a wonder, and i didn't see anybody getting in the way. and believe me these little town strive on tourist money for this, what always gets me though is WHY would you live there!! if it's so dangerous MOVE!! btw you could not pay me enough to live there.
This is a really cool video, but seriously, you guys are stupid! That is the number one thing they stress to people is to abondon your vehicle in a tornado. Please don't anyone try this!!!
I'm sorry to see you find my view pointless. I thought you might see the serious nature of this whole situation. Perhaps if you hadn't come here and done the video and posted it, this bickering would have not occurred either. As far as I am concerned you can just not come back. We don't need your help. If you would want to financially assist the folks that lost their homes, I would be glad to put you in touch with them. There, now my superior American pride is satisfied, I got the last word
This isn't a game to us out here. It is life and death. It hurts to see that others come here to find a thrill out of our yearly danger like it is some kind of amusement park ride. It's not, it's deadly serious. Other folks turn it into a money making scheme by charging several thousand dollars for "storm tours" I find that quite sad. One man profits from anothers pain and suffering.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
They are looking at some law changes to address this problem. I have many friends in our area that lost homes and property to the May 23 '08 tornados in the Ellis area. Some came out of their shelters to find their homes totally gone. All they could do is bulldoze the remnants and bury it all. Luckily no one was seriously hurt. If you would like to send them money to help them out I would be glad to get you their addresses. Thats why we find the comments here offensive. to be continued.....
My point is this; there are trained weather spotters that the counties call out when needed. They have direct radio contact with the local Emergency management directors. We also have law enforcement personnel out. When the large group of tornado chasers come into the area on their expedition and they block roads and hinder the movement of local authorities so they can video and take photos, it puts people in danger. local authorities are getting very annoyed by this.... to be continued....
Hey dumbass, I know cause you're an american you think you're the best but when you both have gone to school for 4 years and have chased for the same amount of time what makes you think you're better than her.
It's unprofessional comments like that and arrogance it's no wonder the rest of the world hates your country.
you seem to be the arrogant one here and calling us dumbasses doesn't exactly show professionalism on your part. As for the years in school, great , you're book smart. That doesn't make you more knowledgeable than someone with real experience. As for the world hating us, fine, as far as I'm concerned the U.S needs to do more to secure our borders and quit playing world policeman. Sorry to hear you hate us, but if we are so terrible, why do you come here?
Wow you really mean business here don't you "my friend" Im not going to write a pointless short story like you did and as far as for the visit, we visit the place and not the people. You call yourselves smart and what not and Im sure you are but at least half the people we talked to didn't even know the states that surrounded them, they only knew Kansas.
This I find hilarious, but Im done talking to you about this now, and if you guys would've never made the first comment on this video, none of this bickering would've happened.
You can get the last word if you want to preserve your american pride but you wont get a reply from me. I'm done on this subject!
I grew up in Kansas I have seen almost everything and I have been studing tornadoes sence I was 10 years old. But I do have the sence not to go out just for the thrill of it I go gout for the science. And trying to get the warnings out faster. So just stay home. we dont need people like them out there getting in our way.
When you are in a storm with that kind of power you should never act like that. You need to be calm and keep your head together. Or you are going to get yourself KILLED
I do not think that it is a good idea to take people out in storms just to make them think that they can roll with the rest of us. I have been chasing storms for the past 5 years.I went to school for 4 years to do this. And I cant stand seeing people out there who have no reason being there thinking that they are storm chasers. You just need to stay home where you need to be and stay out of our way and let us do our job.
That's awesome, I went to school for 4 years to do this as well, and I have been chasing for less than you so maybe one day I will be as great as you are at storm chasing
My two points are this; large tourist groups block roads to film and photograph tornados and if a bad tornado hits a group of tourist spotters, it will overstrain the local rescuers that are available. A county spotter told me a week ago that they were trying to go down a local road and were blocked by 1/4 mile long line of cars parked 2 wide on a small country road blocking his ability to travel down that road. That is a disaster waiting to happen.
OMG! OMG!! over & over.....they say our children become dumber with each generation. I agree this is true. Call me old, but the last several generation are REALLY getting dumber. OMG! OMG!!
you thrill chasers really need to stay away. you make it difficult for the local law enforecement and volunteer spotters to do their jobs in protecting the local population. The way you all race from one spot to the next without regard for traffic laws is going to get someone killed. Leave the chasing to the scientists and just stay home.
How presumptuous of you to assume that we are 'thrill chasers' and that we have 'no regard for traffic laws'...Anyone who has any education whatsoever about meteorology abides by a set of unwritten rules and FYI, that we do have. One of those rules is reporting what you see so that you do help the local population. This is only a clip of what we saw and is meant for entertainment purposes for people who watch videos on Youtube
Keep your assumptions to yourself before you make such allegations.
I am basing my comments on things I observed in our recent outbreak of storms and the hoardes of chasers that descended on the area.
I know from my own experiences and those of local official spotters that traffic laws and safety are not a top concern to the "chasing community" And from your video I do not see any true scientific information being gained. As you state in video, "Holy shit, this is so worth it". real professional.....
Like I stated before... this is a clip of what we recorded and it has been edited to be 'entertaining' to people like you on Youtube. Again, if by "chasing community" you mean the people who do go out there with absolutely no experience or education then yes I agree with you however, I restate, those who have any education do respect safety obviously; someone who is spotting the storms has the intent of phoning the severe weather in not harming others.
I can tell you this, the local law enforcement folks would rather not have to worry about the mass of "storm tourists" in addition to the safety of the residents. If you would like to talk to some of them in person I think you would find they would rather not have your "help" They have ample trained volunteers to cover our counties. The storm scientists with NOAA are understood, but the tag alongs following just create traffic problems in dangerous weather.
Most of the "storm tourists" that are chasing are actually uneducated LOCALS that only know the geography of their own back yard. This is "based on things I observed" while I was in Kansas, as you would say. Are you part of the law enforcement there? Do you even know the proper name for "storm scientists"? They're called meteorologists in my world; and by the way, we are all meteorologists. So go hate on some of the real threats to the stormchasing community, not us.
I may not be "educated with honours" but I have enough sense to stay out of the way of a tornado. I have also managed to stay alive here in tornado territory.
By the "chasing community" I am referring to people who come here from other states and other countries to chase tornados entirely independent of any scientific or governmental agency. The storm tour folks have also been in situations that have blocked the movement of local official spotters. I'm sure if you would call the Ellis, Trego, Gove and other west Ks sheriffs offices they could confirm this for you. I know because I am friends with these folks and they talk about it often.
Lol -- as a chaser, I must say, it's kinda cringe-worthy to hear people say such retarded things on tape. "We've got our seatbelts on!". You all seemed mighty confused by what you were looking at and it sounded like you were relying on other traffic to make your tactical positioning decisions for you. I'd suggest you hang back from the cage a bit until you've chased a few more storms.
Hhaha I was just as scared as the girl. I got hit by the tornado as it passed through town a few seconds later in the dark. Almost died of a heart attack

LukeTHr 3 years ago
My point is this; there are trained weather spotters that the counties call out when needed. They have direct radio contact with the local Emergency management directors. We also have law enforcement personnel out. When the large group of tornado chasers come into the area on their expedition and they block roads and hinder the movement of local authorities so they can video and take photos, it puts people in danger. local authorities are getting very annoyed by this.... to be continued....

OMG you are so STUPID HA HA. You know nothing. I show this viedo to my group. To show them how not to act in a storm. You are the worst.

Hey dumbass, I know cause you're an american you think you're the best but when you both have gone to school for 4 years and have chased for the same amount of time what makes you think you're better than her.
It's unprofessional comments like that and arrogance it's no wonder the rest of the world hates your country.
doggg55 3 years ago 4
you seem to be the arrogant one here and calling us dumbasses doesn't exactly show professionalism on your part.
LukeTHr 3 years ago
Wow you really mean business here don't you "my friend" Im not going to write a pointless short story like you did and as far as for the visit, we visit the place and not the people. You call yourselves smart and what not and Im sure you are but at least half the people we talked to didn't even know the states that surrounded them, they only knew Kansas.
doggg55 3 years ago 3
This I find hilarious, but Im done talking to you about this now, and if you guys would've never made the first comment on this video, none of this bickering would've happened.
You can get the last word if you want to preserve your american pride but you wont get a reply from me. I'm done on this subject!
doggg55 3 years ago 3
I grew up in Kansas I have seen almost everything and I have been studing tornadoes sence I was 10 years old. But I do have the sence not to go out just for the thrill of it I go gout for the science. And trying to get the warnings out faster. So just stay home. we dont need people like them out there getting in our way.
stormyks81 3 years ago
When you are in a storm with that kind of power you should never act like that. You need to be calm and keep your head together. Or you are going to get yourself KILLED
stormyks81 3 years ago
I do not think that it is a good idea to take people out in storms just to make them think that they can roll with the rest of us. I have been chasing storms for the past 5 years.I went to school for 4 years to do this. And I cant stand seeing people out there who have no reason being there thinking that they are storm chasers. You just need to stay home where you need to be and stay out of our way and let us do our job.
stormyks81 3 years ago
That's awesome, I went to school for 4 years to do this as well, and I have been chasing for less than you so maybe one day I will be as great as you are at storm chasing
wxdee86 3 years ago
Seriously why do all you yankees hate so much, who cares if she got a little excited don't tell me you walk through tornados like theyre nothing.
doggg55 3 years ago 2
My two points are this; large tourist groups block roads to film and photograph tornados and if a bad tornado hits a group of tourist spotters, it will overstrain the local rescuers that are available. A county spotter told me a week ago that they were trying to go down a local road and were blocked by 1/4 mile long line of cars parked 2 wide on a small country road blocking his ability to travel down that road. That is a disaster waiting to happen.

I was in a tornado and that's how I reacted. I have a degree with honours. What do you do?
wxdee86 3 years ago
you thrill chasers really need to stay away. you make it difficult for the local law enforecement and volunteer spotters to do their jobs in protecting the local population. The way you all race from one spot to the next without regard for traffic laws is going to get someone killed. Leave the chasing to the scientists and just stay home.
LukeTHr 3 years ago
How presumptuous of you to assume that we are 'thrill chasers' and that we have 'no regard for traffic laws'...Anyone who has any education whatsoever about meteorology abides by a set of unwritten rules and FYI, that we do have. One of those rules is reporting what you see so that you do help the local population. This is only a clip of what we saw and is meant for entertainment purposes for people who watch videos on Youtube
Keep your assumptions to yourself before you make such allegations.
wxdee86 3 years ago
I am basing my comments on things I observed in our recent outbreak of storms and the hoardes of chasers that descended on the area.
I know from my own experiences and those of local official spotters that traffic laws and safety are not a top concern to the "chasing community" And from your video I do not see any true scientific information being gained. As you state in video, "Holy shit, this is so worth it". real professional.....
LukeTHr 3 years ago
Like I stated before... this is a clip of what we recorded and it has been edited to be 'entertaining' to people like you on Youtube. Again, if by "chasing community" you mean the people who do go out there with absolutely no experience or education then yes I agree with you however, I restate, those who have any education do respect safety obviously; someone who is spotting the storms has the intent of phoning the severe weather in not harming others.
wxdee86 3 years ago
I can tell you this, the local law enforcement folks would rather not have to worry about the mass of "storm tourists" in addition to the safety of the residents. If you would like to talk to some of them in person I think you would find they would rather not have your "help" They have ample trained volunteers to cover our counties. The storm scientists with NOAA are understood, but the tag alongs following just create traffic problems in dangerous weather.
LukeTHr 3 years ago
Most of the "storm tourists" that are chasing are actually uneducated LOCALS that only know the geography of their own back yard. This is "based on things I observed" while I was in Kansas, as you would say. Are you part of the law enforcement there? Do you even know the proper name for "storm scientists"? They're called meteorologists in my world; and by the way, we are all meteorologists. So go hate on some of the real threats to the stormchasing community, not us.
wxdee86 3 years ago
I may not be "educated with honours" but I have enough sense to stay out of the way of a tornado. I have also managed to stay alive here in tornado territory.
LukeTHr 3 years ago
That comment wasn't to you, I'm not wasting my breath on you anymore
wxdee86 3 years ago
I am out there saving lives and there are people out there getting a thrill of see people that just lost everything.
stormyks81 3 years ago
By the "chasing community" I am referring to people who come here from other states and other countries to chase tornados entirely independent of any scientific or governmental agency. The storm tour folks have also been in situations that have blocked the movement of local official spotters. I'm sure if you would call the Ellis, Trego, Gove and other west Ks sheriffs offices they could confirm this for you. I know because I am friends with these folks and they talk about it often.

that large bang sound was tumble weed, holy shit.
elbarto22 3 years ago
Lol -- as a chaser, I must say, it's kinda cringe-worthy to hear people say such retarded things on tape. "We've got our seatbelts on!". You all seemed mighty confused by what you were looking at and it sounded like you were relying on other traffic to make your tactical positioning decisions for you. I'd suggest you hang back from the cage a bit until you've chased a few more storms.
