The ending of the scene just shows the beauty of The Wire's subtle social commentary. As the dust fills the streets and causes problems for the spectators, it represents a reckless government's failure to understand or deal with the consequences of their actions, and how they hurt other people.
@PieandBiscuits The dirt and dust symbolizes the unforeseen consequences of addressing a problem only at face value. Its a recurring theme throughout the series, as Baltimore tries to put a ban-daid on their serious problems instead of addressing at the fundamental and systemic issues that underlie racial and economic inequality. Juking the stats and tearing down this building are the same thing, nothing changes.
@RIBASAROUS yup, the great theme of the wire is that the capitalist institutions around us, whether the drug empires or the education system or cops, will never change because not enough are willing to address their inherent failures. at the same time, the season is about reform in bunny colvin and stringer bell, both of whom struggle and fail to reform because of their institutions that they are stuck in.
@RIBASAROUS excellent perspective. The loss of this territory leads to need of gangs to fight for new territory, which eventually leads to the death of the little kid from the stray bullet
This is what happen in Kansas City, MO Wanye Minor Terraces a 5 Building high rise in downtown was known for organized crime and murder, When the Blew them down all of the ppl from the jects move to the other parts of the city and just started mayhem. They had all the drug money the jects but when they went down the ppl had to start hustling on otha established turfs so since 2005 KC has had 100+ Homicides every year, Sad But Its Reality
@lilklp86 Same thing happened in the N.O. They tore down all 10 of the projects and moved all the residents into decent, quiet neighborhoods. Now the entire city is no longer safe due to people from rival projects living on the same block and starting up another war in places that has little to no violence
@dejonal Yeah I know what happen down there in the nola, i got a bunch of ppls down there. they tore down all the pjs a couple years ago down there and since then its been mayhem.....thats fucked up.
@DankstaTV all of the dirt and dust symbolizes the the corruption of those who brought down the towers. The corporations and big business are those who are really hurting the low-income families.
This scene elucidates something that has always really bothered me about politicians. For some reason, politicians like to destroy things that "symbolize" bad areas, rather than take the time to eliminate the problem at the root source.
...Let's knock down these high rises because they have become synonymous with crime.... Let's rename South Central LA to just Central LA so people don't associate it with gang wars. It's just putting make-up on a pig. But it's still a stinky ass pig.
I love how the camera focuses on the demolition crew pulling the actual switch while Royce takes credit for pushing the plunger. It kind of reflects that he's all talk and never actually accomplishes anything himself.
@NicolasYates agreed. All about the fall of one empire and the rise of another (Marlo) and also the crumbling in the relationship and friendship of Stringer and Avon as friends...
and...as big as the Barksdale's were...when Bodie and Poot end up slingin for Marlo...it really shows that "one boss same as da nexx"
Also, another point to notice in this scene is the aftermath. When the Towers get blown up, the smoke envelops all those around the zone. I see this representing with the the towers getting blown up and the Barksdales move out onto the street, along with the events of what's to happen next (i.e. the political campaigns, Stringer's Death, the fall of the Barksdale organization, the rise of the Stanfield org., the murder rate rise) engulfing the city completely.
The demolition of the towers represents 9/11 and the falling of the Twin Towers. As a result of that the Barksdales (U.S.) had to move out onto the surrounding neighborhoods(countries) to re-establish themselves. Then Avon (Bush administration) meets Marlo's Crew (Hussein?/Iraq) and starts the Iraq War. David Simon is brilliant.
@KojachBaumherr The Wire is also a critique of U.S. foreign policy. Top critics have even said so. Maybe my interpretation stretched too far but it does make some sense. The Wire is not only a show but a piece of art. And with any artwork you have to really examine the details and "look into shit that aint there".
@LaidbackPlayboy As a resident of NYC I can tell you that planes hit the tower. If you understood any architecture at all you would know that the design of tall skyscrapers is built in a way that makes the tower fall straight down, regardless of weakness in infrastructure.
the seed of crime that exist in a neighborhood reflects the behavior of it's contents. a neighborhood of demographics is just only that. crime-less and prideful neighborhoods can exist. it's called an infrastructure of evolving operation. jobs, consumption, growth, unity, control, freedom are some elements that contribute to a neighborhood regardless of the demographics. make your neighborhood special. create and maintain responsibility. this builds character of stimulated coefficient growth.
bodie is thinking about all the money he will have to miss out on, which in a way gets him killed because he ends up having to stand on regular street corners. i don't think the marlo problem would have happened if the towers were still standing when he gets killed.
I like how the people thought taking down the towers was good. But it only spread the problem out instead of keeping it isolated. Also when politicians take down projects, its to put up condos and get rid of those same people that was all happy and shit when the towers came down. They NEVER see it coming and yet it happens so often. There's gonna be a change alright and the first step is to get rid of you.
@TubeGuest5178 thats cause the planes didnt bring the building down it was rigged to fall down like that the us was the reason the twin towers went down there was dynamite in the building just like that of the towers on here and as they demolish any other building
@WiseGuy5674 A 110 storied building wouldn't collapse from a plane hitting the top of them. Especially the way it did. Straight down like a controlled demolition. Impossible. You seem to be the shit-brained moron that believes everything you see on the news. Do some research. It will keep you from looking like a complete idiot next time you leave a comment on youtube about that subject again.
Ok before the Towers come down and I'm pretty sure they knew they were coming down. Why didn't Stringer try to will and deal with the other crews on sharing their package. And where were they slinging because I'm sure before they blow the towers up/down. They had the people out for like months before the they came down. LOL!!! Maybe I'm going to deep.
This scene represents so much. Mainly the trend of gentrification (in that you may destroy the area where the negativity takes place, that doesn't mean an end to the negativity. It just moves somewhere else. i.e. When the Towers came down, Barksdales moved onto the street corners). More importantly, it symbolizes the end of the Barksdale Organization (also symbolized by the red light at the end of the scene).....
Never be another show on earth that can touch The Wire.
@NicolasYates That's what happened in chicago when they start tearing down all the projects in the City( well most of them because Dearborn and the Ickes are still standing.). There is so much similarity here, even with the organization, the name of the founder of the Black Disciples in chicago name is David Barksdale... Hmm....
Even outside of Chicago, it's going on everywhere. In NYC and ATL, it's becoming more and more clearer. Down here in ATL, there are NO PROJECTS around. @NicolasYates I see where you are coming from. The dust could also represent the evil being felt by a majority of the people. As soon as the dust rose, everyone stated coughing, as if the negativity, or evil was spread out all over the town. Genius observation mr. Yates.
