@peacebuntou When ever you feel like it, on smaller reenactments it's just when ever you get tired or run out of powder. But on these larger ones you need to because that's how it happened.
Nothing like watching two army vets squabble over a sad piece of history, each having an own opinion and backing it up as such. It's nice to see a decent discussion on YouTube for once.
@GIDAN2987 No, you don't really comprehend it...............IF, that is all you think it is.........'enjoyable intertainment', then you're more out of touch than I first imagined. I'm a Vietnam vet, and you can't tell me a thing about the horrors of war, pal, but I will always enjoy reenacting, to honor my ancestors and why they fought and died.
@GIDAN2987 And THAT, is what they fought for. I am proud of them, even if you're not. If you think that all we do is 'honor' the horrors of war, well then, you're really out of touch or you just plain don't get it!..........or you're just a Yankee that is brainwashed and doesn't want to get it.
@GIDAN2987 Well, I know too, what war can do, as I am a Vietnam vet, so I am no stranger to those horrors, but I am STILL a reenactor, and I'm proud of it! I don't choose to glorify the War, and anyone who has been through that brotherhood, knows full well what it entails, and will never glorify it. What I do glorify however, are my ancestors, for what they fought for, they thought was right. The North invaded their land, their homes and threatened their livelihoods.
@GIDAN2987 It's obviously something that you don't really comprehend. I don't look at it as 'entertainment', it's honoring those who fell, defending what they thought was right. While most who watch these reenactors like watching, they don't actually realize what real war was like, I mean, they cannot possibly know or understand the horror of it, just as today's youth cannot comprehend what real battle is like, unless they've experienced it.
@GIDAN2987 I understand where you're coming from too, but as a reenactor I can honestly say that everytime I partake in a parade or a battle reenactment, entertainment is the furthest thing from my mind. I do reenacting to honor those who gave their lives for this country and to keep alive the history that they created and were a part of.
Paying tribute to the brave soldiers who gave their lives during the War Between the States, to me, is what reenacting is all about.
@GIDAN2987 I understand what you mean, but there are lots of combat veterans who are also reenactors... and while it is entertaining, it is also history, and when history becomes just writing on paper, it loses it's effect.
@trainkids Fredricksburg stats: Union engaged 114,000 - CSA egaged 72,500. Casualties Union - 12,653; Casualties CSA - 5,377. Gettysburg stats: Union engaged 93,921 - CSA engaged 71,699. Casualties Union - 23,055; Casualties CSA - 23,231. Yes that's right, casualties at Gettysburg are virtually the same, with CSA having over 20,000 less men. Lee had to retreat but...read all the stats and weep, or admire Confederate soldiers.
@stellalouise1 Well actually there hasn't been a confirmed amount of casualties for the rebs at Gettysburg. It's believed reb casualties could have been anywhere from 23,000 to 28,000. And also the whole point of my last comment was to prove the north had lower casualties at Fredricksburg than the rebs had at Gettysburg
@trainkids You are funny. The stats just can't be right. lol Why would anyone compare Union casualties at Fredricksburg to Confederate casualties at Gettysburg? They are apples and oranges. It APPEARS that you are being creative to enhance the performance of the Union. The Union won the war through overwhelming numbers. Grant said so himself. If these stats upset you, then what ever you do, DO NOT look at Chancellorsville. You will never get another good nights sleep. :-)
@stellalouise1 First off the reason why I'm trying to prove the amount of casualties is because there is a comment on here from someone that says the north had more casualties at Fredricksburg than the south had at Gettysburg, which obviously is incorrect. Second I have seen different battle reports that do say varied casualty numbers for the south at Gettysburg (look it up and you'll see varied numbers as well).
Im not saying this is true, but I have an aunt who works in these things. She knows people who claim to see civil war ghost cheering them on when they do these. Has anyone heard of such things?
Im a world war 2 reenactor and iv looked at quite alot of reenactment videos from idfferent periods. I like the civil war reenactors because they put on good show battles, they always have tons of casualties, plenty of noise and smoke and don't seem afraid to get down and dirty. It awesome! 1600- 1800 reenactors of other wars seem to be afraid to ruin their expensive ornate uniforms and in ww2 battles theres always 1 guy walking around who seems to be invincible and never takes cover.
so how do you know if you go shot in these reactments?
