I find some of these stories about Dead hard to believe. Buried himself in a coffin for 3 days and would keep dead birds under his bed? Umm, I dunno.... Anyone know if these can be corroborated by other people? I'm thinking stories are exaggerations stemming from real life events, like maybe Dead slept in a coffin a few times and somehow left a dead bird under his bed by accident. As far as the living members of Mayhem goes... To them it was making music. People like Oystein, Pelle, and Varg lived and breathed what they wrote about. It was more than imagery, it was ideology. Despite being so underground, they were literally the propoganda and the force of arms all at once. The church fires are proof of that. Oystein gets the blame for everything because he's not here to defend himself. The difference between Oystein and Necro and Manheim is that they were using and promoting an image. To Oystein the Black Metal lifestyle was not an image - it really was his life. He was not unsympathetic to Pelle (you can read this in his own words in zine articles) but he understood that all Dead wanted was to die - it's doubtful anyone could have saved him. Necro himself admits in Pure Fucking Mayhem that he thought of driving to check on Pelle then 'decided not to'.

This documentary is amazing, thank you so much ! I couldn't even dream of something like this back in the 90s, me and my friends had only a few fanzines and some tapes. There was little to no news about the Norwegian scene and it was also contradictory. Great to know how things went, thanks again.

I know perfectly well what black metal is. 'Real' black metal is just a matter of opinion.
Maiden influenced some bands, but far from all metal bands. Quorthon of Bathory disliked Maiden.
Maiden (in my opinion) isn't metal anymore, just hard rock, in the same manner as Deep Purple Used to be called Heavy metal in the 70's.
But that doesnt mean Iron Maiden isnt good music, and it doesnt mean Cradle can't make good music just because no one consider them 'Black' anymore.

But Quorthon was influenced by Black Sabbath and Venom(proto-Black Metal)...which is slightly Darker Heavy Metal...Maiden and Priest are Non-Bluesy Heavy Metal
And Maiden ARE still metal didn't you hear the Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg or Brighter than a thousand suns?

Actually,both Maiden and Priest are very bluesy music.Not because they are necessarily inspired by blues,but rock is very blues influenced, and heavy metal/hard rock builds onto that. Even trash metal bands like metallica are "bluesy".
And this is why I love black metal,because its NOT bluesy!
Yes,he was inspired by them, but didn't include much of the blues atmosphere in his Own music,and the same goes for the so called Real black metal bands that came later,when they were inspired by Quorthon

Maiden and Priest aren't Bluesy...Blues has it's own scales and music theory...Priest took metal out of the Blues and into mostly Minor and Major(music) stuff
Maiden followed in their step and began the New Wave of British Heavy Metal
And Rock IS very bluesy but Priest and Maiden are METAL not Rock
