While the mother made some completely cringe worthy comments, I do feel bad for her and I can understand where she was coming from. She feels if she is constantly walking on eggshells and can't express how she truly feels about blacks (usually in ways that are not negative), without them getting up in arms about it, particularly Renee. I'm sorry, but for a white person, that is just not a comfortable way to live, by tiptoeing around things because of political correctness.
So dumb. Being a creature makes you ugly now? These stupid motha' fuckers need to Google the definition of that word.. Like, I'm a cat person. I love cats. If I had to describe them, I'd say that they were the most beautiful creatures on this planet. If being called a "creature" was a bad thing, how would my statement even make sense? Sure, he might not think The Blob is beautiful, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Makes you wonder what he finds when he looks in the mirror, doesn't it?
Carmen needs to think before she speaks. No one was overreacting, the entire group left after she made her stupid comments about the gay dude and the 'black creature' shit. It's not acceptable and she needs to learn that. Typical white privilege, they think they can do no wrong.
Ugh, the communication problems here are so frustrating. They see "creature" as having negative connotation, she didn't see it that way. End of story.
creature is the same as saying that she is a animal. Humans are animals yes, but to put to say "black creature" was just completely retarded. How many times hasn't black people been called monkeys or animals through out history? Yes humans are monkeys but you still don't call people monkey. She have to Absolutely socially retard to not see how that isn't offensive. "I don't know what you are? gay or straight" infront of his peers like that, how retarded do you have to be to blurt that out?
Part of the reason why they're was conflict in the white mom's statement of "Beautiful black creature" was the due in part by the connotations associated with the colours, and not only the word "creature". In a western context, the colour black is typically associated with a negative, evil context, meanwhile the colour white is more associated with being positive, and good. That's why when putting what seems to be two negatively connotated words together like "black creature", it seems negative.
this show doesnt work on these people, they have the whitest white and the blackest black.........lol they arent gonna see how it feels to live as the other because they are not the other, period.
anyone else call that toll free number what the mom meant by beautiful back creature wasn't to be hurtful it was a misconstrued form of her affection and the fact that shes corny and white is a legitimate basis for her defense i mean she didn't want to make it sound hurtful but she was trying to relate to black people and well came out the wrong way the black people have already stereotyped her and thus she cannot say or do anything to fix that all it is adding fuel to an already raging fire
The white mom has good intentions and the black family is going on full attack? Why is that? I'm Hispanic and if she said brown creature I would not have been offended.
@MrBowiekid - doesnt this show how sensitive folk can be about a word.. if ur brother was afflicted with a mental illness many would b more sensitive to the word retarded..

Black. I didnt get offended with the Black creature thing. I think anybody with intelligence would know she doesnt mean your a fucking monster or something. I understood what she was coming from when saying that but I do think she was being to over the top with it. The black family needs to chill a bit and quit looking for them (the parents) to mess upo and find shit to brag about.
I just think that the white mother is just so stupid i mean just coming out and asking if the boy was gay was very stupid and ignorant the black creature thing wouldnt have been so big if the comment about the boy wasnt made i dont think that anyone there is racist i just think that they dont know how to act around eachother so they say and do things built on steriotypes and arrogance about eachothers races
And in the poetry session when she was speaking, it was OBVIOUS that she was coming from a pure place. I agree that she shouldn't have asked the guy his sexuality but that has nothing to do with race, that's just inappropriate. But the "creature" comment was taken too far, I am only 23, but I have heard that comment made as well, and it is not offensive. I think that Renee has a stronger personality than Carmen and so it's easy to over-talk her in conversation but she has no real argument...
I feel really bad for Carmen, because I understand where she is coming from, and I know what it's like to be misunderstood and misconstrued. She is frustrated because they keep taking everything that she says and turning it into something that it's not. When she called Renee a B she said that she thought that black women call each other that affectionately-which some do!-and yet Renee just took it and turned it around as tho she had just walked up and said it out of the blue...(con.)
Carmen is being taken out of context. As a black man, I think the black family is over zealous with the racism. They are missing a big lesson by not understanding the words of this white woman. Racism is not as bad as they think, but it is not great as Bruno thinks. The white woman is trying to express her appreciation for black people in a way that is uncharacteristic of white society, a subconscious buried admiration, that she wants to express. Thats how a lot of whites feel too not pure hate
@MrUnorthobox I completely agree. As a white woman, there is a lot of admiration I have for blacks, but it would be uncharacteristic to express it openly. (As Carmen did, even though she was pretty weird about it) A buried admiration would be the best way to refer to it as.

If we tiptoe around it and pretend it doesn't exist, we give it power. If we confront it and dissect it and examine it, we give it power too. This is a rare issue where not giving a shit is a helpful outlook.

"Do not correct me right now... (I mean it.) I do not want to have to CHOOSE MY WORDS" for the sake of others... She looks so psycho in her efforts to maintain her sense of white privilege. However, it would be of some use if the black family would make an effort to be less ethnocentric and come to terms with the fact that words do vary from people to people... and that sometimes intention is more important than language used. Even if she was rude - they're attacking her for the wrong reason.
agreed.. look at the initial attitude.. 'we already know how to act white.. we dont really need to learn white'
sad really coz there was something lost of the experience when they chose to separate themselves from it..
still think they represent a typical black family with many lessons to b learned from them.. even tho the white folk were chosen and composed of actors they still represent the privilege u describe and therefor offer the truth of witnessing it in action..
@madcadaver agree with all the comments. notice how at the beginning of the kids discussion on stereotypes when she mentions whites having an easier time in life, the guy kind of double takes and says 'yeah, stereotypes... whether they're true or not'.
How the white women feels about talking is how black people feels in life. Always got to watch yourself if you don't want to be judged. But damn the white lady is stupid. She thought saying " yo bitch" was "talking black" and "beautiful black creature" didn't seem wrong at all. Why not just say beautiful human being. Why did she have to bring up black and call her a creature. Just stupid shit.
Carmen is absolutely obsessed with coming across as knowledgeable and open minded. Bruno seems to me to be totally ignorant, seriously, in this entire thing so far it seems to be the children who are most open minded, rose especially. as for the "black creature" thing, i think she went totally overboard trying to fit in t\with the group, SHE ONLY JUST MET!!! you should not say those thing s to any one you dont really know.
Calling ANYONE a creature will probably piss them off--but really, coming from a white person to a black person, definitely dumb as hell. Does she think Blacks and other minorities weren't called monkeys and other names in the past as well as TODAY?? Damn she is an IDIOT.
When Mark Twain used the term beautiful black creatures he chose the word to describe the people he was in awe of he was describing the space and distance between the two cultures., it is not really appropriate today because we apparently live in harmony ^^
Yes I have been called a beautiful creature by an estranged aunt or someone new in my life.., girls have called me it., its sorta like saying I dont know you but I wanna know you coz I am mystified by you
Carmen means well, but it does not come out that way to the black family. I really don't think she meant any harm, but she could have said a beautiful black women, or girl.
@uhrealnigga85 Yeah but what's the point in him participating? I admit I'd be rubbish on one of these shows because I don't feel strongly that people are racist or whatever but if people have these strong opinions it will a) help the white family have more tact and more of an insight and b) let the black family see that most people are not racist/do not have an advantage because of their colour. So if it is a show of liberal, forward-thinkers no one learns anything
The angst that Carmen feels is due to her upbringing in mainstream American culture which has taught her to be open minded and not racist clashing with her need to be true to herself and whatever ignorance that she may subconciously hold.
Like most white people, Carmen and Bruno believe that if they themselves do not outwardly act racist and continue to be "true" to themselves and others that they are not racist. What they fail to realize is that racism is like a river with a strong
undercurrent; you cannot just stand still and live your life because you will be swept down the river. In order to live your life without racism you will have to work upstream, you will have to make an effort and that is something that most people are unwilling to do.
im white, and fuck my life i never ever ever ever x 99 heard someone call a human a CREATURE lmaooo especially a fuckin Beautiful Creature, as far as i know a creature is something like an alien, this woman is all kinds of fucked up man dang
bosniahustlax: i was being sarcastic lol Angelina Jolieis beautiful woman as is Ajuma (top model), Beyonce, Lauryn Hill, Angela Bassett, Nia Long, Shingai Shoniwa (from The Noisettes) etc etc
no one refers to Angelina Jolie as a 'beautiful white creature' ever
Carmen really means well and I like her for that, but some times its best to just sit back and experience it without getting completely involved like the poetry incident. Renee I just plain don't like because she isn't getting along on purpose. Carmen tries to apologize among other things, but Renee just won't listen to it and it was over something completely stupid.
like any hardworking Black woman to get anywhere in life in White majority countries you encounter alot of Carmens & brunos whilst trying to strive for a better life. you may never know the feeling of finding out the extent of a white friend or asociates ignorance about race- its never nice at all
racism is gay, plenty my boys black, go to Iraq and get shot at, tell me white and black matters after that when you have to trust people of all races for your survival, we all bleed red
Using word "creature" from another person! What are these white people in US thinking? White Americans are just mind poisoned. It seems that only young people in this show are truly understanding.
I think creature is an okay thing. Like if she said "a beautiful creature", I'd be like okay. They say that in literature all the time. But I think because she threw "black" in there, it got all messed up. Plus her mom is so awkward anyway hah
Yeah, she tossed around the word black a couple of times. "Your strong black physique, you beautiful black creature." I think she truly meant well, but she seemed to need to drive home the fact that they're black. I think they were already aware of that small detail.
The whole thing where she (or bruno) says that the black family could just ask her what she meant...the problem is, it wasn't directed towards that family, it was directed towards the woman who is no longer in the house. and they aren't on that level where the woman would know (for certain) what carmen meant. She may have, she may not have. It situations like that, you do have to choose your words.
this show, shows how white people are pussies, sorry for the language but the white lady leaves the argument crying and the black lady just has fun and laughs with her husband
she should just have said beautiful people, or beautiful young people the word creature is just so ambiguous. I hope one day she becomes less naive, i mean damn her daughter has more common sense.
Both sides need to grow up on this "beautiful black creature" issue. In lots of great, old poetry, the phrase "creature" or "beautiful creature" is used to describe desirable women. Carmen's actions and words in the series so far have proven her to be ditzy but nothing even CLOSE to intentionally mean or rude - everyone should have understood that's how she meant the word, even if it was dumb of her not to realize using "creature" in a racial context is dangerous.
Exactly! She is not intentionally being rude or mean and she clearly is not aware of her verbal boundaries when talking to certain people.(black people in this case)
Instead of attacking her, they should try being understanding and helping her understand these unintended acts of 'racism' that sooooooooooo many white people commit.
I think that black lady loves drama. Just like when she went to Leos Bar. She expected to encounter racism after what her husband told her about the patrons.
I couldn't stop laughing when I heard her say that. It was just the utterly wrong choice of words and I knew it would cause further conflict. I mean, to call someone as a "black creature" is just not done, as "creature" could easily be interpreted as subhuman, especially in the subject of race.
I couldn't believe the way she exploded at Rose for her neutral viewpoint. Rose seems infinitely more mature and likeable than both of her parents.
Speaking with a country accent isn't going to help you. You know what will help you, Carmen? Educating your self will help a great deal. You can be proud of who you are without being incredibly racist and ignorant. Try it sometime.
I like this show, but I feel it ignores some fundamental foundations that neither the show producers not most of the veiwers understand. So the result is defending people on the basis of their intent and not the impact.
i agree rosh, much more is needed bfore ppl really understand the foundations of racism.. several vids in my racism playlist attempt to assist with the learning
the black women is boring cause she is always offenced, and too sensitive, she spoiled the ambience, poor rose she missed to be slapped by her mother even though she tried to calm things
yo i feel sorry for rose, cause it looked like her mom was about to hit her,,,, that white lady is crazy,,,,,, all rose was trying to do is kill all the hostility in the room.
Man, blacks and whites are not hard to understand! Fuck! These white and black people are fucking dumb and ignorant! I mean white people are everywhere and their like the default culture while black people's demeanor is just understood...or at least to some of us it is!
all the white people on here are open minded exept the lady she just sees whats on the outside and thinks thats the good parts and bad parts shes just stupid
I'm surprised no one called her out on another comment she made. She said something to the effect of "your strong black physique", which also seemed weird. It's like, why are you so hung up on the fact that they're black, you freak.
Probably because she's trying to compensate for her discomfort. If she hasn't been around too many black people in her life she probably has no idea what to say.
Reminds me of this Dorothy Parker short story where the main character keeps saying (about a black guest at a party) "I think nothing about it at all!"/"Why, I'm totally fine with it!" but by saying it so much she basically lets it be known that she DOES think something about it and she's not okay with it.
The white mom is so out of touch and sheltered. But I have heard "Beutiful creature" used to talk about a white person, meant to compare a person to an angle, or a sprit, fairy, or unicorn or something, the saying black creature was the problem, that and you can't call a black person creature because of their history being called animals. Being called a creature could mean your more than human or less, a white person will assume you mean more than human, but a black person will take it as less.
Notice how Rose goes over to sit next to Nick after her Carmen (her mother) stuck by her guns on the "beautiful Black creature" statement?
Rose sees where this is horrible.
You call Creatures from the Black Lagoon..Creature Feature... Plus the mother called out the guy about being straight or gay. CARMEN NEVER went to a poetry class & just met all those kids. She should have fell back and played the back on this, BUT her nature is to feel important, speak out of turn and say ignorant things
carmen's statement points to white privilege.. this is something we havnt focused on yet, but when u r told from a young age that u r better than another.. some believe it deep down enough to not even realize y they do what they do.. enjoying that privilege is powerfull
check out "tim wise" on this topic for a clear understanding
Cool... will do. I think it's a matter of socialization for sure. You have Black people that were brought up around Whites, Latinos, Asians that adopt similar socialized behavior as normal to that environment. The same way Whites from a Black or Latino neighborhood normally adapt to the way that they can fit in & survive that is normal to them.
Nature vs. Nurture... I do believe it's nurture moreso than nature.
She should have said "divine creature" but yeah, a lot of humans like to seperate themselves from the animal kingdom so I could see how creature would be unacceptable.
*renae->needs to relax and stop jumping at every littl eopportunity to point fingers.
*brian->actually getting something out of it.
*nick->ignorant as hell. fits the generic negative stereotype of a young black male.
*carmen->is truly trying. and i feel like no one is being understanding of her at all. shes being open-minded, which is more than anyone can say for bruno.
YEAH BUT BITCH choose your fuckin words. YOU call someone creature and you get UPSET for THEM being angry at u for it? Man grownass woman wtf is your problem
Now, I know some people think art is all about being 100% true to yourself, its true, but for example me who does rapshit I dont show all my lyrics to everyone cuzz some of the content will be very dissrespectful and might get me into trouble... Be pure but CUT/EDIT your art!!! damn stupid bitch
Im ok with being called a beautiful white creature, whats wrong with that? These blacks are such instigators, its like engrained in there blood. totally weird.
its fine if individuals don't mind.. the issue is if the person offended is being reasonable, then they have a right to be offended. is it weird that not everyone appreciates the same joke?
poetically, the term "creature" can be used, but what does it bring to mind? are there any terms you would mind being called?
i do agree that the black engraining you speak about is real.
i think its incredible when u find blacks who no their history but choose to think outside the box and dont mind racial slurs or aren't offended by every little thing.. now thats progress
its a lil more than a feeling nm.. i would point to spike lee's film bamboozled for a quick history of some of the ridicule black have endured throughout americas recent past..
I'm glad Carmen finally said how she felt. I think Renee was so obnoxious to have called her out. I think the Sparks' family read far too much into what was said.
every human being is sensitive.. some just tend to over react or exaggerate more then others.. As a black women i felt like renee (the black wife) was too sensitive she would blow things way out of context and cause conflict.. she wants the white family to understand her culture so badly but she never not once tried to understand things from thier perspective... she's fucking annoying and faustrating I'm glad carmen finally came out and said something.

What they fail to realize is that racism is like a river with a strong
scrubbler23 2 years ago
undercurrent; you cannot just stand still and live your life because you will be swept down the river. In order to live your life without racism you will have to work upstream, you will have to make an effort and that is something that most people are unwilling to do.

Carmen really means well and I like her for that, but some times its best to just sit back and experience it without getting completely involved like the poetry incident. Renee I just plain don't like because she isn't getting along on purpose. Carmen tries to apologize among other things, but Renee just won't listen to it and it was over something completely stupid.

i hate racists that mean well even more than overt blatant KKK BNP Party racists
racists that mean well normally interview u for jobs
deliver your baby
sell u a house
be your work collegue
everyday subtle racism is so much more deeper because racists like Carmen arent even aware that they r racist.
the kkk bore us with there obvious predictable awareness of there brand of cliched dunked in evil racism.
Carmen type of racism (ignorance) black people everywhere have to work with that everyday

like any hardworking Black woman to get anywhere in life in White majority countries you encounter alot of Carmens & brunos whilst trying to strive for a better life. you may never know the feeling of finding out the extent of a white friend or asociates ignorance about race- its never nice at all

astmapiippu 3 years ago
I agree with your comment about the youth being the only ones who understand.
housecry 2 years ago
I think creature is an okay thing. Like if she said "a beautiful creature", I'd be like okay. They say that in literature all the time. But I think because she threw "black" in there, it got all messed up. Plus her mom is so awkward anyway hah
KEAdams992 3 years ago
Yeah, she tossed around the word black a couple of times. "Your strong black physique, you beautiful black creature." I think she truly meant well, but she seemed to need to drive home the fact that they're black. I think they were already aware of that small detail.
jonthom11702 2 years ago 4
The whole thing where she (or bruno) says that the black family could just ask her what she meant...the problem is, it wasn't directed towards that family, it was directed towards the woman who is no longer in the house. and they aren't on that level where the woman would know (for certain) what carmen meant. She may have, she may not have. It situations like that, you do have to choose your words.

she should just have said beautiful people, or beautiful young people the word creature is just so ambiguous. I hope one day she becomes less naive, i mean damn her daughter has more common sense.
peace190788 3 years ago 3
So yeah, go Carmen for finally getting upset.
bcoombs1988 3 years ago
Both sides need to grow up on this "beautiful black creature" issue. In lots of great, old poetry, the phrase "creature" or "beautiful creature" is used to describe desirable women. Carmen's actions and words in the series so far have proven her to be ditzy but nothing even CLOSE to intentionally mean or rude - everyone should have understood that's how she meant the word, even if it was dumb of her not to realize using "creature" in a racial context is dangerous.
bcoombs1988 3 years ago 3

Axlepros 3 years ago 3
I couldn't stop laughing when I heard her say that. It was just the utterly wrong choice of words and I knew it would cause further conflict. I mean, to call someone as a "black creature" is just not done, as "creature" could easily be interpreted as subhuman, especially in the subject of race.
I couldn't believe the way she exploded at Rose for her neutral viewpoint. Rose seems infinitely more mature and likeable than both of her parents.

I'm surprised no one called her out on another comment she made. She said something to the effect of "your strong black physique", which also seemed weird. It's like, why are you so hung up on the fact that they're black, you freak.
jonthom11702 3 years ago 2

Being called a creature could mean your more than human or less, a white person will assume you mean more than human, but a black person will take it as less.

she's denying that some people might have taken what she said the wrong way.
she needs to stop thinking about "her heart"
because from what i've heard so far, in her opinion, it's always about "her".
and the question about homosexuality... it had NOTHING to do with the situation. people need to know when to limit what they're going to say.

She should have fell back and played the back on this, BUT her nature is to feel important, speak out of turn and say ignorant things
crazycoolone 3 years ago 4
carmen's statement points to white privilege.. this is something we havnt focused on yet, but when u r told from a young age that u r better than another.. some believe it deep down enough to not even realize y they do what they do.. enjoying that privilege is powerfull
check out "tim wise" on this topic for a clear understanding
fortruth3 3 years ago
Cool...
