  • Classic metal! Have all their music on my HTC

  • Frank and Steve Vai look like they could be brothers. What a resemblance.

  • @blitzspeer I've said that for YEARS and people thought I was crazy. You and I are geniuses!

  • at 0:00 kylie minogue??

  • Ray Alder is god.

  • LOL - I just learned today that I hired the drummer to work for me!

  • @lirpa7474 Doing what? How an earth did you discover that and what did you do when you found out...give him a promotion??? What a story!

  • he taught me how to sing!

  • This song touches my soul. I miss when heavy metal was epic like this.

  • 1:35 FAP FAP FAP

  • !ANYONE NEED FATES WARNING MUSIC SHEET!IF YOU WANT TO COVER A SONG BUT WONT FIND IT AT ULTIMATE.GUITAR.COM,CONTACT ME. I DO MUSIC TRANSCRIPTIONS 100% ACCURATE!,ILL SEND A FREE TRANSCRIPTION IF YOUR NOT SURE.

  • Steve Zimmerman is a monster

  • John Arc of Ray Alder...thats almost impossible for me to choose

  • To me this song set the standard for vocals. I will always be a Ray Alder fan.

  • I was fortunate enough to see them for the Perfect Symmetry tour where they did a great deal of the old material including work from this magnificent album. Ray Alder is a big part of how I sing and The ivory gates of dreams is lyrically inspirational and musically outstanding. this is a watershed album.

For Alder, this album and Perfect Symmetry are golden. I sort of got lost afterward to be honest.

  • @achromat666 This was Fates peak album. Perfect Symmetry and pararells are good but the 1st 5 lps by fates are pure fucking magic. Especially awaken and no exit.

  • sucks that ray don't sing the same anymore. saw them in july, awesome show.

  • the snare is so phat i love it!

  • they RULE, they RULE!!!

  • No one can fuck with Fates! I go back to the early days. Seem em hundreds of times. Arch and Ray both rule!

  • STILL GOT THIS LP ON CASSETTE TAPE.

  • amazing

  • Great band, but they couldn't make it out of Queensryche's shadow.

  • @capeguy63 well if they chose to become radio frienly they may have had a shot... im kinda glad they stayed where they were, to be honest

  • Metal at it's absolute best. Period

  • One of my fav. songs of FW. I always enjoy Ray's highest vocals, amazing! Also very underrated metal band, they deserved more.

  • Fates Warning ROCKS \m/

  • the guitarist on the right looks like slightly like Steve Vai.

  • @Shun101010 lol or steve harris

  • this song is fantastic but the video stinks big time.

  • Man to bad Ray lost his voice smoking up the cigars to include the Pooch!..He really messed up his singing career...damn what a loss!Probably why they decided not to continue in the mainstream and be more popular then DT....but it's a good thing Ray hasn't lost his dedication...God bless always guys your the best-no matter what!!

  • i remember seeing this back in the 80s on headbangers ball and thinking what the fuck was that! been listening to FW ever since

  • this track rocks so much. "Time blindly races on.."

  • What is this song about? Reading the lyrics I'd think it is about a child who that doesn't has the love of his parents but can't speak about it or something. Just a guess, though.

  • YES

  • Their best album and Ray Alder has far more enjoyable vocals than John Arch's weird whiny faggot vocals....

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila just because you dislike John's vocals does not mean you have to insult him, stupid fucker

  • lol I was merely saying why I don't like his vocals...No need to cry like a faggot about it...

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila if it looks like crying i would like to meet you in person and make you cry from a punch in the face

  • oooohhhh no the Pantera fan is getting threatening...hahaha shut up you greek retard and go listen to vulgar display of power....

  • @WolfgangVonPoserkila does it really matter if i listen to pantera?listen to the cemetary gates vocals and then speak.and when greeks had philosophy and astronomy you were hanging from tree to tree tard

  • lol shut the fuck up you stupid prick. All you talk is dogshit. Go and get an english lesson and come back when you talk it properly....

..and come back and give an opinion on Fates Warning when you're not a groove metal fan you fucking moron lol..

  • Σου γαμώ την μάνα και την αδερφή ενώ βλέπεις μπάσταρδο.επίσης είσαι γαμώμανος και σου γαμώ το σπίτι.

Go get a greek language lesson to understand what i just said...

  • @xatzis012 Ha ha ha, i hope you didn't mean my sister and mom cause my grandma was Greek;-))))). But anyway, FW rocks and you also rock with that:).Χαιρετίσματα από τη Σερβία

  • @MrSnorreke it does mean that but i was not addressing you.greetings from greece as well.music breaks down all boundaries that are known as countries and borders

  • @xatzis012 I know, but i made joke cause i understood what you wrote. You are right, music breaks down all boundaries.Hail to Hellas from Serbia.Fates warninggggggg!!!!!!

  • ray is so cool

  • RAY FUCKEN ALDER!!!!!

  • Man, that voice is so f***in incredible!!!!!

  • It is funny how Metal is bashed all the time when in fact, it is deeper than much hippy music and more pasionent than any thing else out there. Even the newer metal coming out singing about world events and the complexady of the human heart. Music wise...well instiried by most sounds from the past, with amps on 11 and no holding back.

  • @floatingcompassmedia funny i never really hear anyone bashing metal..pop n emo is mostly what i hear everyone bashing and i can see why

  • @motleycrue24 Most people I meet think it's noise and not a good beat. When I was a kid in high school rap was more welcomed by teachers than metal. Then again, I just moved from Toronto a few years ago...not much there. This might be a Canadian/Toronto thing...dance music is huge there. oh, when I was a kid, NWOBHM was hated by the Rockers...it took a few years - 83? for them to get into it.

  • @floatingcompassmedia

From Hot Girls and Morotcycles to Humanity, Society and Filosophy...

Heavy Metal can talk about everything, and never fails.

  • i jus cant get enuff of this one ,it has great meanin when u know wat the lyrics r all about ,u smell me

  • All Fates Warning is good Fates Warning, but the first albums with Arch are my Bible. It is everything that was good about METAL... Melody, Harmonies, a bit of fantasy and more talent than they could fit on an album.

    Masterpieces from the Metal Gods

  • @AmIevL paralles was good but probely not as good as there early stuff but there where a couple good tracks on it..after that they kinda got a lil to modern for me

  • I want this album!!!!! I avoided Fates Warning because I thougth they sounded too much like DT. Pure ignorance on my part. I'd never heard anything from their first 4 albums until tonite. Now, my question is. Should I buy their entire catalogue or stick with their first 4 albums? I happen to like both Arch and Ader on vocals. Some advice here. Thanks

  • Every CD is excellent.

  • Every album is very special in it's own meaning! Ray also sings in the bands Redemption and Engine both bands are great as well!

  • Any just remember FW haave been doing that DT esque sound since 1989 while DT only started doing that sound in 1992.

  • way back when this video first came out i could hear the awesomness and difference, it was melodic and rifftastic, drew me to it more than slayer or napalm death and crap like that. not to down em but fuck kerry king couldnt play a solo t save hell

  • i think black sabbath uses the influence of blues way too strongly....

  • I hung out with close friend of this band

    cool dudes

  • I think the comparison between Geoff Tate and Fates Warning involves the second vocalist. As for Dream Theater comparisons. After their first three albums, the band began to move from an Iron Maiden-like sound to a DT-like sound.

  • awesome song..very underrated album but whats with the solo.. ive heard so much good guitar work on this album..but this solo doesnt really fit the song

  • Frank Aresti's guitar from this video just sold on eBay a couple weeks ago for $2001.00. It was still in immaculate shape, wish I had the money for it.

  • i would give my left nut for that guitar, even though ppl wouldnt believe it was the actual guitar

  • good shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Forever the VERY BEST!!!

  • I never cared much for the band but this song will always have a place in my heart. The solos and how the guitar players "talk" to eachother is something that not many bands can do! I put this song next to "Trial By Fire" by Testament!! Great song!!!!

  • No offence, but at one time this was a good sounding band. I think these guys are great musicians, but after a year or two of get Ray Alder as their singer they went way too progressive and lost their heavy metal sound totally. This also happened with Sabatage as well and this is why I think prog rock rock and prog metal sucks because "JUST BECAUSE THE MUSIC HAS DISTORTION IN IT DOES NOT MAKE IT REAL METAL".

  • umm yo asshole,,its progressive metal for a reason..it pregreses and doesnt stay the same same..btw,tard..its savatage..2 of the best bands ever..and ral alder adn zachary stevens are 2 of the best to ever stand behind a mic.wow youre fucking stupid..actually take in 3 albums at a time and ull understand why they were and still are the front runners of porg metal, along with q ryche back in the day..juts cause it isnt heave ya say..yeha it s till is.some of the finest metal!!

  • I'm entitle to my opinion, so fuck off and die asshole. I never called anyone names, but since you had to open up your idiot mouth I have no problem doing so now. You're a fucking poser and would not know real metal if it hit you in the face and someone should do so for you being a moron. Rot in hell douchbag.

  • technically, the first metal band was Black Sabbath, back in 1969/70. or if you want to get extremely technical, the phraze was first used to describe Hendrix's playing. Metal has many branches/sub-genres, and prog metal is just one of them. And just because you don't like prog, doesn't mean it sucks. Prog has far more technical skill involved than standard metal. I suppose you think it has to have grunting/screaming vocals to be metal as well. :\

  • Fuck John Arch. Half the time he sounds like a whiny homo. Ray Alder was/is a far better singer.

  • No way man..John Arch is by far superior..sorry ...but you must accept the truth...!!!

  • John Arch is a better vocalist technically. Though I personally prefer Ray as well.

  • Well Ray is almost generic but he's still got enjoyable vox...where John Arch sounds like a whiny little girl....

  • Brilliant

  • On "No Exit", Alder tried to emulate Arch a bit more than subsequent releases. Arch was more "Geoff Tate" if any comparisons are gonna be made.

The great thing about Arch was that he didn't always hit notes spot-on, but sometimes was off-key, but in a way that sounded sinister and possessed by the Unholy One.

Those first 3 FW albums are still the best, and No Exit is the only one of the others I've bothered to buy on CD and rip and synchronize. They started to become "Dream Theater, 2" .

  • I agree with everything you said man, But I have to say that Alder is a far better vocalist than Arch. I love everything that FW has come out with and imo Alder is a far superior vocalist. Of course I am not Taking anything away form Arch.

  • Well I agree with most of what you're saying I must shake my head in disgust at that Dream Theater comment...I must inform you that Fates Warning was progressive before Dream Theater was even around so you should rephrase that last statement as Dream Theater started to rip off Fates Warning

  • Dream Theater and Fates Warning are very different from one another and always have been but no doubt Fates Warning have been earlier than DT the rest their musical ideas and all are very different and both bands are just phenomenal!

  • FW and DT are noticeably different.

  • John Arch sounded nothing like Geoff Tate. Both had immense ranges, yes, but Geoff was still far technically superior to Arch. Arch had strong, powerful highs, yet Geoff had powerfull highs AND lows.

  • Viva JOHN ARCH!!!

  • My favorite FW song.

Always liked Watchtower's "Control & Resistance" too.

  • Ray Alder is great, but i much more prefer the early Fates Warning with the great John Arch.....Ray Alder is from my city, san antonio, tx....my friend used to party with him...he remembers back in the 80's when he landed the Fates gig...he said he was so stoked, he couldnt believe it.....lucky SOB

  • Wow I love this band and I love the singers voice!

  • oh and what a fuckin scream and solo at 1:34

  • this band seems to be pretty sparse... allthough im not too keen on the vocals the band just simple kick ass. whats the name of that guitarist on the right? hes fuckin sweet

  • What a voice!!!! Ray Alder is a heavy metal god

  • he was good...doubt he can still reach that high....happens to everyone

  • it's not age that did it to him. he totally destroyed his voice with drink/fags. his voice is meerly a shadow of what it was. his tone is still gorgeous though.

  • Ray Alder was a cross between Tate,Dickenson and Tony Harnell. And later on Steve Walsh

  • I saw Fates warning in Oakland, Ca. a long long time ago. No Exit tour It was an awesome show. They played with Sanctuary it's when refuge denied was new. brings back a lot of memories.

  • Frank Aresti looks like Steve Vai's little brother in this vid. ;-)

  • If you think Rob Halford cant sing then you fucking faggots dont know shit about what a REAL metal singer should sound like. Rob is NOT a falsetto and he OWNS any singer out there...not saying tis guy is bad because i LOVE Fates Warning but Rob Halford is in a leauge of his own that cant be touched,

  • YEAHHHHHHHH since first time that i knew them i couldent stop to mlistening t them.Hey do u know about more bands like this???

  • definitely one of the best prog bands ever.

  • Ray Alder is amazing, especially if you compare his work with Fates to what he does with his solo project Engine. Quite diverse.

  • Fates Warning were technical, melodic, and heavy. No Exit was a kick ass album and i still love it to this day.

  • One of my favourite bands. Do any of you have some better sounding videos of this band? I can sing just like this guy :-) I am looking in particular for "The Ivory Gate of Dreams".... Thx.

  • This guy is one of the rare singers in 80's metal that could actually sing....fuckin incredible voice. Nice ass riffs too...heavy.

I must have drawn the album cover to No Exit like 20 times during junior high. Easy picture for an amateur artist like me to doodle.

  • Who were the 80's metal singers, that could not sing? Bruce Dickinson, or Geoff Tate? Or maybe Dee Snider? I don't think so. Or maybe Rob Halford? 80's metal singers COULD really sing! Or prove us otherwise. . .

  • My list of 80's Metal singers that had great voices and COULD sing (not just Metal but any Genre of music): Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Ray Adler (F.W.), Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass), David Wayne (Metal Church), King Diamond (Yes, King Diamond!), Jon Oliva (Savatage),

  • Fuck you. First off, Ozzy has been around before the 80's but started his solo career in the 80's. And its Mustaine, not Mustain dumbass. Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield and Rob Halford are amazing singers so either your stupid, deaf, or both. A quit making up shit, nothing called Power Rock. If anything, Twisted Sister is hard rock, like MOST glam bands and I said most, NOT all. and again, fuck you.

  • Comment removed

  • Lol ROB HALFORD CANT SING! IGNORE HIS FOUR OCTAVE VOCAL RANGE!

  • Yeah, we've heard it all! Rob Halford cannot sing! Are you on drugs or something? Or probably a fan of Ricky Martin? As for Dee Snider, check songs as "the price", or the Twisted Sister "Live", and come back to tell us if Dee can sing.

  • Well as for "The price" its pretty bland. Not very high, and Dee is strained. Dee Snider, lacks quite a lot.

As for Halford, he can speak verses in a sustained G5.... Dee...well he is lucky to break into the upper 4th octave.

As for who i am a fan of i would say James LaBrie, Geoff Tate, and of course Ray Alder.

  • Glam is not music, its a look. Its like morons calling metalcore emo because of the bands looks (its not all the bands anyways) but the sound is plain metal (some alternative or hard rock like Underoath). doomantia is a dumbass to say those people can't sing. and to make up something like power rock.

  • Dee Snider is a massive performer. Judging from the vocalists you like, i would call you an elitist. On the other hand, James LaBrie is one of the most overestimated vocalists in Heavy Metal. He may have an impressive technique, but seriously lacks in sentiment and passion. Elements that Snider has in tons! One more thing! Try to judge a vocalist more individually and according to YOUR taste. And not according to what magazines write. I say it with affection. Over and out.

  • Sentiment and passion?

Check out Mullmuzzler (His side project)

An elitist? No sir. I am a singer and my favorite singers are the good ones!

And as for taste, Rob Halfords ability speaks for itself, and i judge by MY taste because i have developed MY voice.

  • temon giles!!

  • This was on HEAVY rotation in my tape deck all through high school. As a vocalist and guitarist, I bow down to how insanely technical and skilled this musicianship is. Another classic from this era is Flotsam and Jetsam-No Place For Disgrace. The guitarists rip, and like Ray Alder, Eric AK can peel the fucking paint off the wall with his high notes. OLD SCHOOL METAL FOREVER... CHEERS

  • I agree!

  • Awesome !!! 5 Stars !!!

  • holy shit just found this band and man can the guitarists wail man

  • Damn, Ray used to have such an awesome voice :(

  • America's answer to Bruce Dickinson

  • waaaay better than bruce... bruce need falsseto to hit those notes...

  • Not to mention that Bruce couldn't even hit those notes properly.

  • we played with this band back in the day and they were awesome...queensryche era-ish.
