I was fortunate enough to see them for the Perfect Symmetry tour where they did a great deal of the old material including work from this magnificent album. Ray Alder is a big part of how I sing and The ivory gates of dreams is lyrically inspirational and musically outstanding. this is a watershed album.
For Alder, this album and Perfect Symmetry are golden. I sort of got lost afterward to be honest.
@achromat666 This was Fates peak album. Perfect Symmetry and pararells are good but the 1st 5 lps by fates are pure fucking magic. Especially awaken and no exit.
Man to bad Ray lost his voice smoking up the cigars to include the Pooch!..He really messed up his singing career...damn what a loss!Probably why they decided not to continue in the mainstream and be more popular then DT....but it's a good thing Ray hasn't lost his dedication...God bless always guys your the best-no matter what!!
What is this song about? Reading the lyrics I'd think it is about a child who that doesn't has the love of his parents but can't speak about it or something. Just a guess, though.

@motleycrue24 Most people I meet think it's noise and not a good beat. When I was a kid in high school rap was more welcomed by teachers than metal. All Fates Warning is good Fates Warning, but the first albums with Arch are my Bible. It is everything that was good about METAL... Melody, Harmonies, a bit of fantasy and more talent than they could fit on an album.
@AmIevL paralles was good but probely not as good as there early stuff but there where a couple good tracks on it..after that they kinda got a lil to modern for me
I want this album!!!!! I avoided Fates Warning because I thougth they sounded too much like DT. Pure ignorance on my part. I'd never heard anything from their first 4 albums until tonite. Now, my question is. Should I buy their entire catalogue or stick with their first 4 albums? I happen to like both Arch and Ader on vocals. Some advice here. Thanks
way back when this video first came out i could hear the awesomness and difference, it was melodic and rifftastic, drew me to it more than slayer or napalm death and crap like that. not to down em but fuck kerry king couldnt play a solo t save hell
I think the comparison between Geoff Tate and Fates Warning involves the second vocalist. As for Dream Theater comparisons. After their first three albums, the band began to move from an Iron Maiden-like sound to a DT-like sound.
awesome song..very underrated album but whats with the solo.. ive heard so much good guitar work on this album..but this solo doesnt really fit the song
Frank Aresti's guitar from this video just sold on eBay a couple weeks ago for $2001.00. It was still in immaculate shape, wish I had the money for it.
I never cared much for the band but this song will always have a place in my heart. The solos and how the guitar players "talk" to eachother is something that not many bands can do! I put this song next to "Trial By Fire" by Testament!! Great song!!!!
No offence, but at one time this was a good sounding band. I think these guys are great musicians, but after a year or two of get Ray Alder as their singer they went way too progressive and lost their heavy metal sound totally. This also happened with Sabatage as well and this is why I think prog rock rock and prog metal sucks because "JUST BECAUSE THE MUSIC HAS DISTORTION IN IT DOES NOT MAKE IT REAL METAL".
umm yo asshole,,its progressive metal for a reason..it pregreses and doesnt stay the same same..btw,tard..its savatage..2 of the best bands ever..and ral alder adn zachary stevens are 2 of the best to ever stand behind a mic.wow youre fucking stupid..actually take in 3 albums at a time and ull understand why they were and still are the front runners of porg metal, along with q ryche back in the day..juts cause it isnt heave ya say..yeha it s till is.some of the finest metal!!
I'm entitle to my opinion, so fuck off and die asshole. I never called anyone names, but since you had to open up your idiot mouth I have no problem doing so now. You're a fucking poser and would not know real metal if it hit you in the face and someone should do so for you being a moron. Rot in hell douchbag.
technically, the first metal band was Black Sabbath, back in 1969/70. or if you want to get extremely technical, the phraze was first used to describe Hendrix's playing. Metal has many branches/sub-genres, and prog metal is just one of them. And just because you don't like prog, doesn't mean it sucks. Prog has far more technical skill involved than standard metal. I suppose you think it has to have grunting/screaming vocals to be metal as well. :\
On "No Exit", Alder tried to emulate Arch a bit more than subsequent releases. Arch was more "Geoff Tate" if any comparisons are gonna be made.
The great thing about Arch was that he didn't always hit notes spot-on, but sometimes was off-key, but in a way that sounded sinister and possessed by the Unholy One.
Those first 3 FW albums are still the best, and No Exit is the only one of the others I've bothered to buy on CD and rip and synchronize. They started to become "Dream Theater, 2" .
I agree with everything you said man, But I have to say that Alder is a far better vocalist than Arch. I love everything that FW has come out with and imo Alder is a far superior vocalist. Of course I am not Taking anything away form Arch.
Well I agree with most of what you're saying I must shake my head in disgust at that Dream Theater comment...I must inform you that Fates Warning was progressive before Dream Theater was even around so you should rephrase that last statement as Dream Theater started to rip off Fates Warning
Dream Theater and Fates Warning are very different from one another and always have been but no doubt Fates Warning have been earlier than DT the rest their musical ideas and all are very different and both bands are just phenomenal!
John Arch sounded nothing like Geoff Tate. Both had immense ranges, yes, but Geoff was still far technically superior to Arch. Arch had strong, powerful highs, yet Geoff had powerfull highs AND lows.
Ray Alder is great, but i much more prefer the early Fates Warning with the great John Arch.....Ray Alder is from my city, san antonio, tx....my friend used to party with him...he remembers back in the 80's when he landed the Fates gig...he said he was so stoked, he couldnt believe it.....lucky SOB
this band seems to be pretty sparse... allthough im not too keen on the vocals the band just simple kick ass. whats the name of that guitarist on the right? hes fuckin sweet
it's not age that did it to him. he totally destroyed his voice with drink/fags. his voice is meerly a shadow of what it was. his tone is still gorgeous though.
I saw Fates warning in Oakland, Ca. a long long time ago. No Exit tour It was an awesome show. They played with Sanctuary it's when refuge denied was new. brings back a lot of memories.
If you think Rob Halford cant sing then you fucking faggots dont know shit about what a REAL metal singer should sound like. Rob is NOT a falsetto and he OWNS any singer out there...not saying tis guy is bad because i LOVE Fates Warning but Rob Halford is in a leauge of his own that cant be touched,
One of my favourite bands. Do any of you have some better sounding videos of this band? I can sing just like this guy :-) I am looking in particular for "The Ivory Gate of Dreams".... Thx.
Who were the 80's metal singers, that could not sing? Bruce Dickinson, or Geoff Tate? Or maybe Dee Snider? I don't think so. Or maybe Rob Halford? 80's metal singers COULD really sing! Or prove us otherwise. . .
My list of 80's Metal singers that had great voices and COULD sing (not just Metal but any Genre of music): Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Ray Adler (F.W.), Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass), David Wayne (Metal Church), King Diamond (Yes, King Diamond!), Jon Oliva (Savatage),
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
My list of 80's Metal singers that COULD NOT sing even if their fuckin lives depended on it: Ozzy Osbourne, James Hettfield (Metallica), Tom Araya (Slayer), Dave Mustain (Megadeth), Chuck Billy (Testament), Max Cavalera (Sepultura), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Lemmy (Motorhead), Conrad "Cronon" Lant (Venom), Paul Baloff (Exodus), Joey Belladonna (Anthrax)...BTW...I wouldn't consider Twisted Sister Metal...more like Power Rock
Fuck you. First off, Ozzy has been around before the 80's but started his solo career in the 80's. And its Mustaine, not Mustain dumbass. Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield and Rob Halford are amazing singers so either your stupid, deaf, or both. A quit making up shit, nothing called Power Rock. If anything, Twisted Sister is hard rock, like MOST glam bands and I said most, NOT all. and again, fuck you.
Yeah, we've heard it all! Rob Halford cannot sing! Are you on drugs or something? Or probably a fan of Ricky Martin? As for Dee Snider, check songs as "the price", or the Twisted Sister "Live", and come back to tell us if Dee can sing.
Glam is not music, its a look. Its like morons calling metalcore emo because of the bands looks (its not all the bands anyways) but the sound is plain metal (some alternative or hard rock like Underoath). doomantia is a dumbass to say those people can't sing. and to make up something like power rock.
Dee Snider is a massive performer. Judging from the vocalists you like, i would call you an elitist. On the other hand, James LaBrie is one of the most overestimated vocalists in Heavy Metal. He may have an impressive technique, but seriously lacks in sentiment and passion. Elements that Snider has in tons! One more thing! Try to judge a vocalist more individually and according to YOUR taste. And not according to what magazines write. I say it with affection. Over and out.
This was on HEAVY rotation in my tape deck all through high school. As a vocalist and guitarist, I bow down to how insanely technical and skilled this musicianship is. Another classic from this era is Flotsam and Jetsam-No Place For Disgrace. The guitarists rip, and like Ray Alder, Eric AK can peel the fucking paint off the wall with his high notes. OLD SCHOOL METAL FOREVER... CHEERS
Daniel, Who Died And Made You God?!?! Great song, you guys were good. Glad to see you are still kicking out music. Later, dude. Will check out your new project. I'm a Warning fan too. I miss the old days!
One of the best songs, videos and LPS of 80s metal! ...saw live in Cincy on Vine St. They were killer. I will listen to this track when I'm working out. These guys are seriously gifted.

Lol ROB HALFORD CANT SING! IGNORE HIS FOUR OCTAVE VOCAL RANGE!
Petruccibear 2 years ago
Yeah, we've heard it all! Rob Halford cannot sing! Are you on drugs or something? Or probably a fan of Ricky Martin? As for Dee Snider, check songs as "the price", or the Twisted Sister "Live", and come back to tell us if Dee can sing.
doomantia 2 years ago
Well as for "The price" its pretty bland. Not very high, and Dee is strained. Dee Snider, lacks quite a lot.
As for Halford, he can speak verses in a sustained G5.... Dee...well he is lucky to break into the upper 4th octave.
As for who i am a fan of i would say James LaBrie, Geoff Tate, and of course Ray Alder.

Glam is not music, its a look. Its like morons calling metalcore emo because of the bands looks (its not all the bands anyways) but the sound is plain metal (some alternative or hard rock like Underoath). doomantia is a dumbass to say those people can't sing. and to make up something like power rock.
AniMetalDominance 2 years ago
Dee Snider is a massive performer. Judging from the vocalists you like, i would call you an elitist. On the other hand, James LaBrie is one of the most overestimated vocalists in Heavy Metal. He may have an impressive technique, but seriously lacks in sentiment and passion. Elements that Snider has in tons! One more thing! Try to judge a vocalist more individually and according to YOUR taste. And not according to what magazines write. I say it with affection. Over and out.

Sentiment and passion?
Check out Mullmuzzler (His side project)
An elitist? No sir. I am a singer and my favorite singers are the good ones!
And as for taste, Rob Halfords ability speaks for itself, and i judge by MY taste because i have developed MY voice.

CHEERS
