I find it interesting that most people commenting on this video are admonishing a practice that was the norm in dog training up until the early 80's when puppy classes and positive reinforcement became more popular and more available.
Clearly the trend - at least on this page - is for positive reinforcement based training. It seems amazing to me that there can be such a huge shift in thought, attitude and culture in just a few decades. Are we so fickle in our beliefs?
@brianthedogguy It may have been, but I wasn't alive then. I've never thought this was a good way to train a dog. From the first time I got my first dog positive reinforcement was what I thought, and still do think, is the way I can train a dog the best, and to not give my dog fear or cause my dog to think that my touch brings punishment.
yea, ok.. how are you supposed to do this to a dog who is trying to bite?? of course he's able to roll that dog over, it doesn't have aggression issues.
Sigh. That poor dog was displaying all sorts of signals that he was uncomfortable - even before that scary man touched him. Grimacing, panting, eyes squinting, lip licking, etc..
This is only a stupid way to get bitten IF you dont know what your doing. True an ESTABLISHED alpha dosent force a submissive dog after he is perceived as alpha. But this is about you fighting your dog for control so that you can train with positivity. It has been proven that this will cause your dog to submit but it is a very harsh method that should only be used on dangerous dogs facing being put down if they dont shape up in the hands of someone who understands the dangers of this move
"Truly The Only way to bring them to a calm submissive state?"
Guess you never tried actual training. If you look at wild dogs, or a mother dog with her pups, the submissive one will WILLINGLY lay on its back and show its belly. The alpha never forces another dog into this position, unless maybe they are actually FIGHTING.
Not for non-professionals(!) and useful only in a very small amount of cases... If your dog is lunging or attacking you this will most certainly be a very bad strategy to handle his behaviour!
Problems usually don't start without an underlying reason. If you misinterprete your dogs body language for a long time until he "suddenly" starts attacking you, you will rather have to work on your relationship with the dog than trying to manage it in a few minutes...
What an idiot. So called trainers like this, who clearly have NO knowledge of the science of canine ethology --- specifically, dog behavior, and who have copied the harsh, old time methods used by that moron Cesar Milan, should be tied to the back of a horse buggy and dragged one block.
Red zone? He sounds like an amateur parroting Millan, lmao. And the way he rolled the dog over is going to guarantee a bite right to the face. Whether you agree with alpha rolls or not, you can tell this guy doesn't know what he's doing.
Wow what a dangerous video!! In a natural situation a wolf / dog chooses to roll itself, the wolf dosent swipe its paws from under it. 'Refuses to be calm' yuck! You cannot demand calm, it is a state of mind not a command!
This technique has been proven to be very effective. It is the natural way. BUT, it takes an expert to do it, you have to be calm, assertive and brave person to do it. Otherwise you will either get bitten or you will mess your dog up. If you don't have the skills, I suggest you stick with the safe method which is the possitive reinforcement method which conditions your dog to be a good dog by getting food rewards as a result.
I do this to my dog when he gets into a red zone while going after a treat. Now that I do this, he much calmer and does not attempt to bark at people walking in front of my house. I feel I no longer need it but he was so aggressive, I had no other option. He is ALWAYS muzzled when I lay him on his side. It has helped my dog, but probably not the best for every situation or every dog.
my dog would have just bit this guy if he did that to him (as would most other dogs), its only working because that dog has been trained that way from the time it was a puppy.
Never ever ever do this. A submissive roll is offered not forced. The alpha dog moves over top and basically intimidates the other dog into offering it otherwise it's not submission it's force. This method went out a couple decades ago. This will lead to a more aggressive fear based reaction next time as your dog has no idea why you would do this to him (because you are not a wolf).
The American Veterinary Society also feels that foods like Pedigree and Kibbles and Bits are good foods for your dogs.....and don't advocate nutrition education. Why do you people trust a society that thinks its ok to give your dog food rendered from roadkill? Do you believe everything you see on TV also?
Why do you people continue to act like your dogs are human children....He doesn't claim that you should do this to an already submissive dog...it people like you who I encounter at the dog park whos dog nips at my giant rottweiler, and then you cottle them and treat train them....my rott would have bit my hand off if I had treat trained him.....get a clue people. Stop being sissies., They are not human, they are not children and they don't understand english. Research basic canine pack order.
@nicolenadia1 I suggest you research basic canine pack order. People here are correct, the alpha roll is something that has been debunked, by the man who did original research on wolf packs no less. Why would your dog, or any dog, bite you for training with understanding and cooperation, and giving positive reinforcement for good behavior? Sadly, dogs are still the most misunderstood species on the planet. I think they understand us far more.
dogs or wolves uses. I have no idea why people have misunderstood this particular method so bad, and I agree with everyone else that has commented that people should NOT try thios method at home because they are going to end up being bitten and with a confused and frightened dog in the end..Feel free to respondon this. I would love to discuss it and hear your thoughts about it!
..the dog/wolf it wants to get back in place. It's done through body language, different sounds and expressions. If a dog or a wolf is on it's back for another dog it is NEVER because another dog or wolf forced it down physichally. A dog lying down on it's back does this to show the alpha that it is calm and submissive! You can say the dog uses a "white flag".
A dog that gets forced down buy a human will never understand why it is held and forced on it's back because it is not
I want to ask you were you learned this technique? Have you ever studier a pack of wolves or a pack of dogs? It's interesting that you say wolves or dogs uses this technique to show "who's the boss" , it is actually distubinglu incorrect. If you really pay attention to how a pack works, you would have seen that the alpha uses none or very little physichal force to make another dog lie down on it's back. The alpha actually puts a psychological social pressure on the...continiues...
Looks like someone watched the Dog whisperer and called themselves an expert.
Dumbass. You don't just alpha roll dogs because they're "about to enter a red zone". If that's the state of mind they're in, there's no way someone can do that without getting bit. Do your research and explain more before you start showing people such stupid things.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior has issued a position statement explicitly warning against techniques such as this, which reflect poor practice in behavior modification and are also dangerous to the human performing them.
Please read something more current about dog behavior than something that was done 20 years ago with captive wolves! Between dogs/wolves this is a voluntary behavior to show that the dog means not harm. The 'alpha' doesn't even usually have to touch the submissive dog. This 'correction' will only get you bit!
Yeah, another "dog trainer" and I use the term loosely that needs to get into the 21st century.
See Karen Pryor, Leslie McDevitt, Melissa Alexander,Dr.Karen Overall, Sue Ailsby....people who truly understand dog behaviour and work with it, positively and very successfully.
I can't believe this guy actually believes this works...he might want to get into the 21st century of dog training....someone is going to get severely bit trying this!
Wow! What a great way to get bitten in the face or neck. This guy is giving out the worst dog training advice I've ever heard and it's based on completely erroneous science. Dogs live in packs and the "alpha" goes around throwing others on their backs? Try reading something about dogs written *after* 1980. I'd love to see him try it with an out of control large muscular breed actually intent on biting. What an interesting video that would make!
Simply stupid. Alpha roll is a very dangerous and unnecessary way to correct your dog.

Actually, rolling the dog and pinning it is not something a wolf would do in a pack. It really tells nothing to your dog.

Never alpha roll your dog! If you are having problems with aggression, contact a veterinary behaviorist or an accredited dog trainer!

If you're dog is acting aggressively, the *last* thing you need to do is be aggressive back. You are fighting fire with fire.

sure you mention "sure way to get BIT" but we all learn from mistakes please don't flag this VDO
instead THIS VDO is great learning for people like me who can't afford ceasar ($900-3000 aggression fear biter)
if you could post a better VDO response of how to deal with out of control "RED-ZONE" dogs that would be great
