  • Truffaut !

  • The utter respect for Mr. A. Hitchcock makes me cry from 0:15 :'(

    i miss cinema !!

  • Comment removed

  • best director ever

  • Look who they cut to Lew Wasserman....LOL..very good.

  • I saw North By Northwest the other day. Awesome movie. I started watching and couldn't stop.

  • He was a true master at the art of film making.

  • What does he say after bankers at 2:54 that sets them all off?

  • @bhbar exhibitors, if I'm correct

  • This is so great to see! What a legend! However, I must say, it's sad to see him in his condition. You can tell he was getting sick at that time. Francois Truffaut described him on that evening as "being there in presence, but the soul was gone."

In any case, though, every horror/suspense director today owes a great amount of debt to him and his body of work.

  • 0 dislikes... king of kings

  • The single greatest film maker who ever lived.

  • The king

  • I discovered Hitchcock when I was 12 and new at that age that his work was special.

  • I love how at the end he seems to hesitate, and then suddenly just jumps up to give a wave to everybody. Almost like he was saying "Well, I am awfully old...Ahh To heck with that" Jumps up and waves. Great director, awesome sense of humor

  • does he say "literature"? in 2:54

  • @Grayfox82 upon repeated viewings, I think he said, "Lyricists."

  • THE MASTER TELLS IT LIKE IT IS!! HE WAS SUPERB! THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM!! WHAT A GREAT MAN!

  • Gee! It's such a piece of impudence he never received an Oscar!

He was a real genius. He made so many movies.. and I like them. They are masterpieces and I can't believe their master was not honored.

  • steven spielberg can suck out, Hitchcock is the king

  • There must be a later video after this one that Ingrid bergman gives NOTORIOUS key to Hitchcock . But it seems that AFI has forgotten to upload it !!!

  • A true genius. No wonder I can watch any of his movies and tv shows over and over and never tire of the 'entertainment' What a brilliant man with such a talent and sense of humor.

  • @redplague Your eyes and your heart do not work.

  • @wildsmiley Thanks for letting me know.

  • Why does it look like he's hunched over in the long shots, but in the closeups he's more upright?

  • @dwalden74 As a precautionary measure, his acceptance speech was taped in advance on the afternoon of the event and was later intercut with the live version. It's obvious he was standing in one and seated in the other. It was doubtful Hitchcock was even going to be there as his doctors forbade him to go on the day before. Hope that answers your question.

  • @macmets Yeah, it looks like he's giving the speech both times, and they use the closeups from the afternoon, and the long shots from the live event. Thanks!

  • ...the light does change a bit between the long and close up shots, and there is a bit of chromatic abberation... probably different lenses in different cameras, or even wrong white balance. check how the color of the eyes change 1:15 and 1:32

  • 5:45 He's talking to YOU Lindsay Lohan!

  • *Clap *Clap

  • For being physically unwell at the time; Hitch's mind is as sharp as ever! We will never to be able to replace or rejuvenate the 'Golden Age' of movies and television. It's also nice to hear humourous speeches rather than having to be so desperate for dialogue as to have to mention another persons' latest 'rehab' stint or worse.. Thanks for uploading all the AFI A award footage. A real treasure to watch & enjoy! Cheers:)

  • What a talent, a bright mind and a unique personality. What a legacy of great cinematography his is . One of the giants of all time. I can watch his movies many times and never get tired of them even when I know the ending. His artistry is so brilliant that watching his movies is a learning experience and a very enjoyable one at the same time. He will be always missed! What a well deserved award.

  • He was probably thinking "Can't wait to get home and watch 'Smokey and the Bandit' again."

  • To have that wit and telent!

  • To have that wit and talent!

  • @bender1011001 - It seems fitting on a video of Hitchcock being honour to express how much you appreciate his work. Whereas you have left 2 post criticizing other people posting relevant comments to the video. So it is "fucking annoying" to praise Hitchcock here but total fine for you to continually criticize someone you don't know and no one cares about. Interesting logic.

  • "man does not live by murder alone".

  • how old was hitchcock here??

  • @jimbo222000 probably over 80 ....witty, intelligent, capable person and the HUMOUR

WE NEED MORE LIKE HIM INDEED

Check his biography on the net....it is all there

    Good luck

  • @jimbo222000 i beleive he was 79 he died a year later

  • 0 Dislikes!

    That's A Rarity Man!........

  • 80 years old and a fresher mind than most young today. Truly a shame his body couldn't keep up.

  • Hitchcocks wife=MILF

  • @dovestones shut up you filthy punk. show some respect for his wife.

  • @calihartley2010 "filthy punk" lol

  • @dovestones yep thats what you are.

  • Definitley one of the most well deserved applauses of all time.

  • @bender1011001 I completely agree. These people understand about as much as his title and just repeat it like fact, He gets pinned as this 'Master' of cinema. Sure, he was a master of his craft and his successful techniques, but so was John Ford, Ingmar Bergman and David Lynch, even the modern Coens.

  • AND YES, SENSE OF HUMOUR HE HAD TOO...not ONLY talent, wit and creativity...The King of Suspense....

  • its been said here but a 20th century Genius Mr Alfred Hitchcock. every director now owes him everything he is the master of thrillers.

    his last performance.............

  • its been said here but a 20th century Genius Mr Alfred Hitchcock. every director now owes him everything he is the master of thrillers.

  • Nice Hitchcock video. Longtime fin of his. All his films deserve viewing.

  • I loved Hitchcock!!

  • 5:28 Christopher Reeve wishing he would bloody finish his speech.

  • @satchfan2010

    Great eye, my friend .

  • who is that asshole in the bottom of the screen at 5:28? what a prick!

  • @xburk it may be polanski, not sure

  • @xburk :

It's Christopher Reeve...and why is he a prick? He's laughing at Hitchcock's joke.

  • what a nice person!

  • @kurtxue

  • The Master is right!!!

  • @1:06 Truffault in front of his idol...wow! Those were the days.

  • I think he mentions "realtors" after bankers but I'm not sure.

  • Hitch The Legend! His films were true genius.

What does he say after bankers at 2:52

  • This man is so humble it touches me on different levels. Such an insperation

  • cant believe all these people are not with us anymore but when you watch this, its just like yesterday.

  • He's so adorable!

  • is because of he that fear in movies do exist....

    thanx U Alfredd

  • He deserved more than that shit award through his life

  • the meaning of suspense died with him now a days movies forgot the word's meaning

  • look at his poor awful teeth. what is with brits not fixing their teeth? anyway i love AF and have since i was a kid. did he mention joan harrison? she was his producer for the tv series forever i think?

  • @daisypeachy The man was 80!!! Stop being a dick!!!

  • what an iconic person....and voice! lol...I loved the beginning when he almost fell and when he stuffed the award in his coat pocket.

Barbara Striesand was funny when she said "what did he say?" lol

  • @MDkid1 im not surprised she didnt understand cos he sounds like a whale farting.... is this available with subtitles....fat donut man.

  • @cwrobinson1985 lol...aww so mean! :)

  • @MDkid1 Ah, im only messing. he was a great director. theres no denying that. people argue that he should have gotten an oscar. personally, I think hes better without an oscar as the oscars are so false and phoney and one can only wonder what goes on beneath the surface at those awards...

  • @cwrobinson1985 You faggot, you dont disrespect such an amazing director like that.

  • @SantasEvilHelper just did. deal wit it.

  • @cwrobinson1985 No respect. I can see you wont go far in life with your attitude.

  • @cwrobinson1985 i would like to see you make a speeach when you are sick and old. I am sure you will sound like a donkey farting.

  • i love it when he trys to get up then fails, i think hes the man but that is sooo funny. watched it drunk and pissed myself laughing. Sorry Hitch, your the man but nothing like a drunken laugh

  • 2:56 is that steve martin on the top? He looks like a wax statue

  • 2:56 is that steve martin on the top left corner?

  • 1:06 Francois Truffaut

  • Did he die the year after this?

  • @Commando303X I believe so, yes.

  • this was on the psycho dvd extra

  • DA DUM da da da da da da da DA DUM da da da da da da da DA DUM DA DAAAA DA DAAAA

  • it is said behind every great man is a greater woman what he said to alma is sweet and so heart felt, the novel by charlotte chandler chronicling hitch cocks career/ life is a must read for any fan of the director or movies in general

  • as soon as he opened his mouth i was like, "damn...hes so british"...lol...

  • love this guy best movies ever such a clever man a great mind RIP hitch cary grant was so handsome RIP cary grant its sad we have lost all the great actors RIP to all the great actors that has passed

  • Olivia de Havilland is there but not Joan Fontaine, who starred in two Hitchcock films. I guess they can't be in the same proximity of each other without fighting.

  • I spy Steve Martin

  • ok...this is the best award speech I've ever heard so far.......and isn't it just swell to be able to thank your spouse after 50 some yrs when you receive a lifetime achievement award of some sort? I mean.....that just makes the whole thing complete

  • truly the master!

  • What an odd, sweet chap!

  • People always talk about how bad Hitchcock was with actress, treated actors like cattle, etc.. the journalists draw a portrait of a obssesive man, but nobody talk never about the relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma, one of the most beautiful love histories in the cinema ever. And this speech is the prove of that...maybe that is because this not sell newspapers

  • @lukelovesrose-- my thoughts exactly.. they waited till THE GREATEST had one foot in the grave, yet theyve honored guys like tom hanks (and dont get me wrong-- i love tom hanks) in the prime of their life.

  • El maestro del suspenso sir Alfred Hitchcock!!!! IRREPETIBLE!!!!

  • He was so old, so close to his end here, it's a goddamn shame it took them so long to properly honor the freakin master himself.

  • A brilliant director, and such a wry sense of British humor, even in his most scary films! Glad to see Truffaut in the audience.he worshiped him...justly so!

  • All of the horror movies these days are either full of gore, sex, or people getting tortured physically. Hitchcock never did that. He was a genius. Alfred Hitchcock has inspired me to learn more about movies. Screw Saw and Friday the Thirteenth, Psycho and The Birds are the way to go!

  • @Petalstripe28 Actually his movies were full of sex. (For 50's standards)

  • He's so adorable!

  • @Petalstripe28 well fuck birds period, that was a shitty macabre thriller. but i would say psycho and vertigo are undisputed masterpieces.

  • @malows1234 The Birds was great. Psycho and Vertigo are masterpieces, but The Birds is still a great film

  • @Petalstripe28 Only the first saw was okay, the rest sucked. I agree with you

  • @Petalstripe28 I agree. Honestly, true horror is dead.

  • @Petalstripe28

In fairness to modern horror films, Hitchcock wasn't a horror director. He was a director of suspense films or thrillers that just happened to often involve common elements of horror films, such as murder.

  • the god, the master, the genius....the best

  • Damn, he's definitely British.

  • hilarious but good advice.... and kind of a premonition of hollywood today, everyone goin to jail !!!

  • Hitch, no one will ever know if you were a good little boy or bad little boy, but you are the most spectacular film director ever to grace the film industry. Stephen Spielberg is a monstrosity next to you.

  • @simolionshane His father thought he was naughty enough to have him locked in the jail cell by the local policeman . "this is what we do to naughty little boys". one of my favourite Hitch anecdotes

  • A twisted mix of Humor and Murder

  • Christoper Reeves bottom left corner as well as some of the GREAT actors of our time.

  • Alfred Hitchcock died one year after this.

He was a gifted man rest in peace Alfred you are a legend.

  • @MrDeCorey Amen to that.

  • After "bankers" he said "exhibitors."

  • such a sweet man!

  • I am happy to say that I remember him when he was alive because I remember watching this. Thanks for posting.

  • It is too bad that he would only live another 6 months after receiving this award. He did not look well here.

  • What is that weird cut @1:22 that doesn't match up. Hitch would not be happy about that. ;)

  • 1979?!! its the same year as hotel dusk!!!

  • I can't say this enough he is the true master of film!

  • He was one of the greatest Directors the wolrd has seen!!

  • A fantastic wit was Mr. Hitchcock. This is one of the best acceptances speeches ever.

  • He is the worlds greatest film director. A true example of human genious and a wonderful man for so many reasons. He remains an inspiration to so many film makers today and his legend will remain forever. Noone before and noone since has ever touched the world of cinema like Sir Alfred Hitchcock.

  • "A man does not live by a murder alone..." :)))

  • alfred hitchcock is the best movie director who ever lived, and his legend shall live on for eternity

  • Brilliant motherfucker; anybody else would sound stupid talking so slowly, but you know he's just taking his bloody time, because he knows that if you even dared to look at him the wrong way, he could just beat you to death with his cerebellum without moving a muscle. THAT AWESOME.

  • @slayerofpigs Hitch was also quite ill at this point in his life having suffered from heart disease and a series of strokes, it is still pretty amazing to see that he still has all of his mental faculties intact. He died the following year in April of 1980 and was actually in the process of preparing another film. Pretty amazing!

  • I had a feeling this'd be pretty funny to watch. It was.

  • I love that Cary grant helps Hitchchock up!! A true gentleman... LOVE HIM!

  • What a brilliant and cleverly funny man, even less than a year before his death. It couldn't have been easy or comfortable sitting there in his condition, but he richly deserved it.

  • Simply, a Legend!

  • There seem to be two "takes" here as he's speaking. One is him sitting down, and the other he's standing up!! I don't get it. You can see the award in front of him sitting down, but it's not there for the other "take".

  • What was that last word he said at 2,55 that cracked everyone up? After "bankers"..Even Streisand turned to someone and asked "What did he say?"

  • @sorobji I can't make it out, maybe Producers?

  • @321womble

no not producers definitely. Besides what so funny about saying producers?

  • The best

  • He is the best!! true legend

  • Que pasa en el minuto 5:09 que Cary Grant se suelta a reir luego que HItchcock hace algo???

  • Pues a mi me parece que se mete un erupto como una casa. Jajajaja.

  • I don't understand Spanish, but if you were asking if that was Cary Grant laughing at 5.09, yes it was.

    Very funny, no?

  • Is that Cary Grant next to him? I read somewhere that the only actor Alfred HItchcock liked was Cary Grant.

  • @Sandu1982 yes! its cary grant

  • @Sandu1982 Yeah, it is him.

  • Pure Genius. Probably no one has contributed so much to the art of "original" film-making.

  • LMAO!!!

  • The Master!!!!

  • RIP christopher reeve and hitchcock

  • Aww his dear Alma is crying. And I love how they show Hitchcock's most famous megafan, Francois Truffaut, in the audience.

  • Dear god Hitchcock was awesome.

  • his so adorable here like his films.

  • 2:53 What the hell did Hitch say?

  • @floorsnarl: exhibitors

    (sry 3 months late lol)

  • Thanks. I knew sooner or later you'd come to the rescue.

  • One of the greatest of his trade.

  • Happy birthday Hitch.

  • Cary Grant is one sexy beast!

  • my favorite director...so dry

  • CARY GRANT!

  • Thank you Alfred.

  • My favourite director of all time. RIP Mr Hitchcock.

  • Did the orcestra cut him off? Greatest suspence director of all time. Congratulations!

  • He's amazing!! I love so many of his films =)

    ~Jade808~

  • multiple viewings of his films and you never get tired of them!!!!! absolutely perfect....

  • hey i noticed cristopher reeve there RIP and i agree one of the best directors to have lived.

  • THEE BEST !

  • definitely one of the best directors of all time. Probably the most influential to all modern movies. And I love how he tried to sneak that award in his jacket.

  • @Mcrlover2death what does he says after "bankers" around 2:50 ? btw...i just CRACKED UP when i saw him sneak that award in his jacket :D
