This is so great to see! What a legend! However, I must say, it's sad to see him in his condition. You can tell he was getting sick at that time. Francois Truffaut described him on that evening as "being there in presence, but the soul was gone."
In any case, though, every horror/suspense director today owes a great amount of debt to him and his body of work.
I love how at the end he seems to hesitate, and then suddenly just jumps up to give a wave to everybody. Almost like he was saying "Well, I am awfully old...Ahh To heck with that" Jumps up and waves. Great director, awesome sense of humor
There must be a later video after this one that Ingrid bergman gives NOTORIOUS key to Hitchcock . But it seems that AFI has forgotten to upload it !!!
A true genius. No wonder I can watch any of his movies and tv shows over and over and never tire of the 'entertainment' What a brilliant man with such a talent and sense of humor.
@dwalden74 As a precautionary measure, his acceptance speech was taped in advance on the afternoon of the event and was later intercut with the live version. It's obvious he was standing in one and seated in the other. It was doubtful Hitchcock was even going to be there as his doctors forbade him to go on the day before. Hope that answers your question.
@macmets Yeah, it looks like he's giving the speech both times, and they use the closeups from the afternoon, and the long shots from the live event. Thanks!
...the light does change a bit between the long and close up shots, and there is a bit of chromatic abberation... probably different lenses in different cameras, or even wrong white balance. check how the color of the eyes change 1:15 and 1:32
For being physically unwell at the time; Hitch's mind is as sharp as ever! We will never to be able to replace or rejuvenate the 'Golden Age' of movies and television. It's also nice to hear humourous speeches rather than having to be so desperate for dialogue as to have to mention another persons' latest 'rehab' stint or worse.. Thanks for uploading all the AFI A award footage. A real treasure to watch & enjoy! Cheers:)
What a talent, a bright mind and a unique personality. What a legacy of great cinematography his is . One of the giants of all time. I can watch his movies many times and never get tired of them even when I know the ending. His artistry is so brilliant that watching his movies is a learning experience and a very enjoyable one at the same time. He will be always missed! What a well deserved award.
@bender1011001 - It seems fitting on a video of Hitchcock being honour to express how much you appreciate his work. Whereas you have left 2 post criticizing other people posting relevant comments to the video. So it is "fucking annoying" to praise Hitchcock here but total fine for you to continually criticize someone you don't know and no one cares about. Interesting logic.
@bender1011001 I completely agree. These people understand about as much as his title and just repeat it like fact, He gets pinned as this 'Master' of cinema. Sure, he was a master of his craft and his successful techniques, but so was John Ford, Ingmar Bergman and David Lynch, even the modern Coens.

People always talk about how bad Hitchcock was with actress, treated actors like cattle, etc.. the journalists draw a portrait of a obssesive man, but nobody talk never about the relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma, one of the most beautiful love histories in the cinema ever. And this speech is the prove of that...maybe that is because this not sell newspapers

He is the worlds greatest film director. A true example of human genious and a wonderful man for so many reasons. He remains an inspiration to so many film makers today and his legend will remain forever. Noone before and noone since has ever touched the world of cinema like Sir Alfred Hitchcock.
Brilliant motherfucker; anybody else would sound stupid talking so slowly, but you know he's just taking his bloody time, because he knows that if you even dared to look at him the wrong way, he could just beat you to death with his cerebellum without moving a muscle. THAT AWESOME.
@slayerofpigs Hitch was also quite ill at this point in his life having suffered from heart disease and a series of strokes, it is still pretty amazing to see that he still has all of his mental faculties intact. He died the following year in April of 1980 and was actually in the process of preparing another film. Pretty amazing!

definitely one of the best directors of all time. Probably the most influential to all modern movies. And I love how he tried to sneak that award in his jacket.
